Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

Agree re some misplaced arrogance CFC

Looking forward to Istanbul. If the timings work.

  2. Will the Turks be taking this competition serious. It feels most countries apart from EPL teams seem to now ?

  3. Hard group & we cant really predict anything until the tranfer window shuts. Who knows what our back four will look like but Nani running at Mulgrew gives me the shudders.

Must recruit wisely over the next few days to have any chance….of not being embarrassed.

Some Celtic fans really amaze me.Just WTF do they think we stand in Europe at the moment?.The Europa League is our level. To turn your nose up at it reeks of a totally misplaced sense of elitism.

It may well prove to be above our level.

Perhaps if some of the money squandered, for squandered it has been in recent years, had been spent wisely it may have been beneath our level.

“Scottish Football, and to a lesser extent Celtic, need to waken up and smell the coffee. An admission that we are on a par with Scandinavia now is not far away”

Scotland are ranked 23rd on UEFA’s Access List, with 16.566 points

    Sweden are 24th with 16.325

    Norway are 26th with 14.275

There’s no admission required. The fact is that Scotland is on a par Sweden and Norway, and considerably behind Denmark in 19th place with 21.30 points.

If you remove the co-efficient points won by Rosenborg and Celtic from the total co-efficient points of Norway and Scotland respectively, Norway has 10 points, and Scotland has 4.

The average standard of league football in Scotland is below that of ALL of the Scandinavian countries, which in part explains why my knitting gets ripped when folk refer to Ronny Deila as a ‘rookie’. The guy’s had 6 years managing a league winning team in a competition of a considerably higher standard than the SPFL.

Judge Ronny Deila on his results as a Celtic manager, not on some ignorant misapprehension of the quality of the league he learned his trade in.

  6. If can get a tough tackling, tactically aware, goalscoring, 6ft 3, left-footed, centre back who can play in midfield…

    with a bit of guile…

and can score direct from corners…

    and costs less than £3m…

we’ll be awright in this group.

    Easy! Easy! Easy! Easy!

  7. Anyone planning to go to Istanbul.Fenerbache play in the Eastern side.If you are planning to stay overnight, you should spend most of the time on the “European”side.Much more modern, and much less Muslim.

  8. My friends in Celtic,

This draw is an opportunity. We are very lucky to have this opportunity as its been a very long time since I have seen so many dejected and demoralised ( myself included ) Celtic supporters after a game.

Make no mistake, this draw has the potential to begin the necessary remedial work; For our reputation, for player and management reconcilliation and most importantly to get the fans back onboard.

Ronny and the players owe us and themselves. Talk is cheap, lets see some action to match the rhetoric and the roar.

    HH.

  9. I judge RD on what he can do with players on an even keel. ie CL qualifiers.

    And he’s mince.

    End of story.

    He has to go. Soon.

Avoid the Blue Mosque (or any Mosque)

    Why?

  11. It’s reassuring when Lawwell comes out and explains his thinking – gives us a motivational speil about where we are going, ambitions of the club etc….

Well in a patellar world where we had a brave leader as CEO it would be…

Lawwell remains silent. Hence he has no followers . No followers means he is no leader.

  12. What price should the 3 game package be?

Alternatively. What price will it be?

I will be busting my buns to get to at least one game, all three if the planets align.

I’m very excited about the fener tie. Things could be much, much worse.

    Bigoted?

Because I spew out the evil of an evil ideology?

    Get a grip son.

Be careful what you wish for. Open your eyes.

    Fascinating stat,mate.

Scottish football seemed to rejoice on Tuesday, rather than bemoan the missing £170k per club.

Yet they have collectively done the square root of eff all to help along the way.

    Hell mend them.

You are an ignorant man and I won’t get into it on here with you

  16. From a footballing perspective Ajax would have been my pick from pot 1. Unfortunately may have been best avoided due to potential off-field issues. We are on Uefa’s radar so the last thing needed is more crowd trouble. Fenerbahce was one to avoid from pot 3 and are probably favourites for the group I would think. Thankfully Turkeybhoy suggests that there is unlikely to be issues there for the fans. Molde should be beatable in a Malmoesque sort of way.

    The Blue Mosque.

    A fabulous building . A must see.

If you have a sweet tooth – there is a fabulous Pudding Shop across the road on Sultanahmet Divanyolu. It’ s come a long way since it was a 60s staging post for travellers looking to score / get a lift to Kabul etc.

I’ve seen you going off topic a few times my lad.

What was that old saying about planks and eyes?

  19. with the potential for disorder at the ajax game I read an interesting story on BBc manchester that there were 56 arrests of Man Utd and Bruges fans before their second league, I have not heard this mentioned anywhere and much more than the supposed Dam riot which painted fans of Celtic as hooligans

  20. Greeninbingley on

The Blue Mosque is indeed amazing. So is Hagia Sofia, the Topkapi Palace, the Cisterns, the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Fener, the Aqueduct of Valens.

One of my all-time favourite cities, Istanbul.

  21. quonno on 28th August 2015 1:56 pm,

Yep,you are right on money wasted.I totally agree. The thing is,looking back and mumping about things we cant change is not going to help. All we can hope is that lessons have been learned. We dont support the board,we support Celtic on the park. When that goes, its all over.Nobody was more sick than me last Tuesday, but its gone now.We can only look ahead. We have a fantastic group to compete in,and already the doom mongers are on.

At the moment, compare our support with the cretins across the city.A few results against plumbers, taxi drivers,Brickies, and they are bubbling, they cant wait to face the next bunch of part timers.

At the same time some of our fans are turning up their noses at Europa league games. Not even the Treble seems good enough now, because we played badly in one game.

    Very depressing.

Nani running at Mulgrew gives me the shudders.

If we are reduced to fielding the likes of Charlie up against the likes of Nani, then I think the present level of dissatisfaction on the blog will be nothing compared to the sh*tstorm that ensues.

We must put every ounce of effort (and every available penny) into strengthening.

It would be criminal to compound failure with further failure.

  23. Watch out for the trams in Istanbul. Efficient but dangerously quiet. If anyone has the time the fish restaurants under the Galat bridge are worth a visit. Haj Sofia more interesting than the Blue Mosque.
