Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

  1. A wee thing that has been bugging me about Tuesdays game. Now I know we did not play well, but,if the rules of the game had been applied, then,Malmo would have been reduced to 10 men,and we would have equalised.

Whats been bugging me,is that very few on here, never mind the SMSM scum, have really highlighted this.

I said last year, after the ICT farce, that what came after the penalty incident, became immaterial,as the game would have changed out of recognition,if the laws were applied.Same on Tuesday.Malmo, reduced to 10 men, behind in the tie,and a Celtic team with their tails up.

Who thinks we would have lost?.

A lot more was made last year of the ICT incident,in a local semi final, yet an incident, every bit as bad, costing the club a probable CL place, and £20 million, seems to have been totally brushed aside.

Very ,very strange.Thats how close we were.

Dates confirmed some nice games on the way. Will Ryan Christie really make us stronger.

  3. All 3 games at home are 20.05 kick-offs.

Ajax and Fenerbahce away games are 18.00 Kick offs

Good scheduling for us. Much easier to get to an 20.05 game than a 18.00 game for me.

Be nice to get off to a flyer Ajax away then Fenerbahce home although 2 points from these two wouldn’t be a disaster.

I can’t believe the enthusiasm for the EL by some here. My son took time off work, spend money he probably coulsdn’t afford to travel to malmo to watch a shower of spineless misfits get gubbed by a team not much better than Aberdeen. At least in the past, our main gripes were with the board but at least we knew the players (with the odd exception) with bust a gut on the park no matter the opposition. Tuesday changed all that for me and I won’t be back or even take time to watch this lot on the TV. They can stick the EL up their collective erses.

See RD is paddling back up stream. Scared was the wrong word. I’m Norwegian not Scottish wrong meaning. Ronny you have lost the dressing room. That was your time to put your foot down. Any player not happy will be sold no matter who it is. Not a wee meeting to apologize. Weak as well as tactically naive.

  9. Have a look at the BBC wesbite and read what they say Ronnie is saying it includes the following

“This club is one of the best-driven clubs in the world. We’re developing young players, we’re taking in players and developing them and selling them for a lot of money and we win so many titles in Scotland.

“If you want to be negative, you can have it in that way (judged on Champions League), but for me it’s much more than one thing.”

Message to Ronnie, Malmo just gave us a real going over, Malmo. You had an excuse last year but not this time.

Seems Ronnie is after all a balance sheet fan and is managing our expectation.

To be honest this not something I want to hear at this time and sounds a touch desperate.

  10. More than anything this is a great draw, for the players.

An opportunity to make up for, in some part, the display in Malmo

    Auldheid-

The issue is not with how much money is spent, it is with how and when it is spent. That is not a matter of philosophical judgement on the question of living beyond your means or not, it is a matter of repeated poor judgement made by our highly paid executives.

We were assured on this site last year that preparations for 2015 CL qualification had begun the minute we lost to Maribor. How could this truthfully be so when one quarter of our first team squad was made up of loan players who wouldn’t be here for 2015 CL qualification?

Ive no issues with there being a transition period when changing from one manager to the next, but by overloading the squad last year with 5 loanees, we extended this transition period into the following summer as well and you see the results now. The roof needed fixed last summer and we stuck a sticking plaster over it and feigned surprise when this gave way in a rainstorm.

These loan signings cost around £2.5million in wages and prevented us from developing our own players in their position making us even less prepared for CL qualification. And then when we did sign a player for cash – Scepovic – we signed him after the most important game of the season, the manager clearly didn’t rate him, he never played him and he`s leaving at a huge loss.

The focus should be on not whether we spend or not, but on how we spend.

If Celtic finish 3rd in the group , do we parachute into the final of the Petrofac Training cup ?

  16. Very tough group but I think these are fixtures, Ajax and Fenerbahce specifically, that we need in the wake of Tuesday. Hopefully the club will produce a realistic ticket pricing plan so that we can fill the stadium accordingly.

Was at a Sporting game in April, wasn’t impressed by Nani, totally overshadowed by Andre Carrillo, guess that’s why they never pushed the boat out to keep him.

Draw looks quite appealing.Should we use this seasons Europa League to experiment with tactics and get ourselves ready for next seasons CL qualifiers? Cheered me up after a poor week.

There’s nothing like a bit of transfer news (potentially) to perk you up.

Catman/Lennybhoy – as alluded to anything involving a striker, is Scepovic away, what about Ryan Christie?

Personally i dont mind Boyata, his distribution is suspect but given the amount of games he has played i wouldnt right him off. Tbf i wasnt overly impressed with my initial viewings of Denayer, you saw when he had to play better quality players (albeit in a pre season friendly) that he needs a good run to adjust, think he’ll be top class, but not yet (Denayer), as for Boyata i think he will improve exponentially
