Ajer can follow van Dijk to top

600

Kristoffer Ajer made clear to Norwegian media his intentions to leave Celtic this summer. “With one year left of my contract, that would be the best solution for me and my club.  Something is going to happen this summer.”

Kris made it clear to the club two years ago he would not sign a new contract and has stuck to plan since.  For me, he was our stand-out Player of the Year last season and compares to the very best central defenders we have seen in the modern era.

At 23, Kris is one year older than Virgil van Dijk when he joined Celtic in 2013.  I would be hard pressed to pick a more impressive season between Kris’ last season or Virgil’s first.  Virgil was better in the air but I have never seen a Celtic central defender break through the lines as safely or effectively as Kris.  Virgil tried this but was not in the same class.

Just as we knew Virgil could do better than Southampton, Kris can do better than the apparently-keen Newcastle.  Liverpool could do worse than pair them up next season, he will play for a top EPL team eventually.  I hope we keep him for the European qualifiers.

saw scotland beat belgium, spain and france,

saw us get cheated by italy and uefa.

as at the ireland match when the anti irish bile reached a peak.

    typed it all on here,

even then, still hard not to support them.

the squad has a majority of celtic leaning players.

    i hope they do well.

Here are his stats for this season. His Morton ones were even worse as I said. Am sure you can find them if you don’t believe me.

Is the stat for headers won. Absolutely appalling for a Celtic CB.

The fact he is “wholehearted” is not in question.

He is simply nowhere near good enough physically, and also limited technically. This will be borne out when we see where his career ends up. We are talking about a guy who was starting for Celtic, yet couldn’t even make the Scotland U21 squad FFS.

  3. LuxCelt,

I’m Happy that Stephen has been signed up, he is just Breaking through Remember. It has been a bad Season but I want our own (Celtic Supporters) playing in the first team more than anyone else, even if they are not glitz&glamour.

The James Connolly Songs of Freedom Band project is the live expression of Mat Calahan’s passion and commitment for reviving interest in the life of Connolly, an Irish socialist leader who was executed by the British in 1916, ostensibly for his role in the Easter uprising. In addition to singer/guitarist Calahan (USA), the lineup included Irish musicians Shirley Grimes (vocals), Joe McHugh (pipes and whistles) and Alan Burke (guitar and vocals) and Swiss performers David Brühlmann (accordion, bodhran, vocals) and Stefanie Aeschlimann (fiddle) as well as acclaimed Swiss blues singer Yvonne Moore, who brought the house down with her stirring interpretation of “The Red Flag”.

  5. Wish all concerned would calm doon. Celtic FC are in safe hands. We wont go out of business like Der Hun. Sevco FC a la Rangers FC have to live with that ignominy.

Celtic FC will go from strength to strength, despite a blip, so long as the Celtic family keep together.

Let Sevco FC have their moment in time,

    Celtic FC ad infinitum.

  6. My friends in Celtic,

Well done Celtic ladies. 6 players out through Covid and they adapt and perform. A fine win and CL football becons.

Established in 2007 they have been a fine addition to the Celtic brand.

They are not millionaires, they play for pride, enjoyment and achievement.

Their work ethic should be an example to their male counterparts.

  7. BSR – eloquently put, as ever

SFTB – “ How did these guys ever become good enough to win 9iar and a quadruple treble if they were uninterested and not trying?”

It would seem to me that they won by being ‘interested and trying’ and then chucked it in one of the most important seasons in the Club’s history, just when it became “ interesting and trying” when the faced a well organised opponent.

As for apologies, showbiz or otherwise, I’ve yet to hear one that really addresses the magnitude of the balls up. In fact, I don’t really recall one worthy of the name.

There are fine margins in football. This time last year, Slippy was considering his future, the support was turning against him and we were strong favourites to win 10IAR and leave him with 0/3.

Fast-forward and with a combination of our capitulation and their momentum, he’s now being lauded by the UK press. Had we won the league this season (and I know it’s an “if” that never came off), he’d probably be less employable than Lampard right now.

I really don’t know how much of a “pull” we are. I do know we’ve just been turned down by a man who is holding out for Southampton.

Two weeks before lockdown in March 2020, I was at Luton airport for a flight back to Glasgow about 18.00.

Walter Smith was 5-6 feet away from me at the front of the queue. His travelling companion asked him about Steven Gerard. Walter said “He’s not a manager” – exact words.

  10. It is indeed back to 90s – early noughties as far as the press are concerned.

Celtic = negative/wantaway blah blah (to be fair we have given them many of the headlines) –

    *angers = positive/swooping/spectacular/riches……

How is it when our players are so shite and non of them would make the *angers team that loads of people want to buy them, are tracking them and are linked to them??

However nobody seems interested in the all conquering super stars from the south side- you would have thought given how amazing they all are and the well known financial background that clubs would be swooping but no?? That would be a negative story and that’s not allowed.

It’s not just the refs and the Covid police that have different rules for some but for all but a few years here and there has it ever been different.

It’s only us that can write our headlines and direct our story and it’s only us that can inflict negativity on them on the pitch as every other outlet is terrified of the mob. We need look nowhere for assistance and expect nothing from anyone in terms of a fair crack of the whip. Rightly or wrongly Celtic have been conciliatory for too long and we now need some steel in the eyes and focus to rebuild and create a path for us and feck the rest of them.

The biggest error of recent years has been to stay just ahead at home and not test and judge ourselves in Europe- a consistent and committed policy to that would have seen us light years ahead and 15 would have more likely that 10. Learn from that error Celtic or we can expect to be back in the 90s on the pitch too.

I work with a Greenock Morton ST diehard who regularly reported to me on Welsh’s ability throughout his loan spell. A reasonable tote who is a genuine Morton man and if anything would be more Celtic minded than towards That Shower.

He couldn’t see why the boy was at Celtic in the first place. He didn’t see anything in a year to suggest he would ever grow into the role.

I think that a lot would cut the Bhoy some slack and God knows there are many more to be pointing the finger at for last year than Stephen Welsh.

That in itself is not to say he is good enough to be a Celtic CB and your point about him not being good enough for Scotland under21s is valid.

  13. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Drew67 – perfectly reasonable to want the national team to do well.

Therefore, my antipathy is perhaps unreasonable.

In practical terms though, if Scotland progress the core of our team will miss the start of pre-season training (!)

  14. Ajer and Eddie will be away soon to add to Klimala, Frimpong, El Hamed, Hendry and probably Shved.

Christie will be off soon enough. Moi’s, Duffy’s and Laxalt’s salaries are freed up as well.

Money will be coming in and freed up. How well it’s spent will determine the trajectory of the club for years to come.

Just on the ladies side, I’m delighted. Well done girls. Women’s football is something we need to be investing in giving the growth of the sport.

I think you will find that the 30th June will be a key date for getting incoming transfer fees agreed.

  16. How dare Celtic “ push for profit “

Outgoing players will all be sold at full price.

It’s the club’s duty to get as much in transfer fees for players that won’t

    re-sign, as is possible.

    Makes sense to me CSC

  17. ST STIVS

    Hope you’re well.

I noticed a comment in the early hours in which you say you saw Italy cheat Scotland.

Is this a reference to a Euro qualifier at Hampden a dozen or so years ago? My memory of that game was Scotland playing really well and through bad luck , bad refereeing and loads of naivety losing a game that at worst they should have drawn.

Another memory of that game was the racist abuse I got at work after that game from Scotland fans one of whom was a Celtic supporter.

Forgive me if I’ve misinterpreted your post.

  18. SQUIRE DANAHER on 7TH JUNE 2021 11:20 AM

Get them out as soon as possible and get replacements in as soon as too.

To all players who are leaving , thanks for your efforts ( i know i know ) .

Unfortunately some will not have sampled the amazing atmosphere we create , under the floodlights on the European stage .

Hopefully those nights return this season although going by news reports its doubtful we will be allowed into the stadium in great numbers ( if any ) due to the rise in different variants of covid .
