Ajer can follow van Dijk to top

600

Kristoffer Ajer made clear to Norwegian media his intentions to leave Celtic this summer. “With one year left of my contract, that would be the best solution for me and my club.  Something is going to happen this summer.”

Kris made it clear to the club two years ago he would not sign a new contract and has stuck to plan since.  For me, he was our stand-out Player of the Year last season and compares to the very best central defenders we have seen in the modern era.

At 23, Kris is one year older than Virgil van Dijk when he joined Celtic in 2013.  I would be hard pressed to pick a more impressive season between Kris’ last season or Virgil’s first.  Virgil was better in the air but I have never seen a Celtic central defender break through the lines as safely or effectively as Kris.  Virgil tried this but was not in the same class.

Just as we knew Virgil could do better than Southampton, Kris can do better than the apparently-keen Newcastle.  Liverpool could do worse than pair them up next season, he will play for a top EPL team eventually.  I hope we keep him for the European qualifiers.

  1. ‘A new breed of supporters.’

    He’s actually quite right.

Supporters who won’t blindly follow the Board/Management and fall for all the spin. Supporters who want to see the club and team run properly while shelving out a fortune for STs, only to watch a delayed feed. Supporters who could do nothing about Lennon’s appointment or foreseen ineptitude. Supporters who watched, amazed, as Lawwell fucked up potentially superb signings. Supporters whom the Board never backed against government and police bullying tactics. Supporters who can smell the coffee and realise that there is absolutely zero connection between them and the Tory, privileged ‘running’ (or ruining) our club.

Aye, damn tooting a ‘new breed of supporters’.

Pity some of the ‘new breed’ don’t have a say in running Celtic.

  2. Supporters who will near riot at celtic park, abusing the staff, the players, the police, during a pandemic,

  3. “new breed” a say at celtic park ?

what as ? banners makers, megaphone co-ordination, intimidation >

  4. onenightinlisbon on

“It was definitely a situation like no other. You’re going for the tenth title in a row and that was an obsession for the fans, an unhealthy obsession, I felt. And we were in the midst of a pandemic where nothing was normal.”

I’m sure that the club would have loved the “unhealthy obsession” with the ten in a row merchandise that was no doubt waiting to be unleashed on the supporters had we achieved the ten.

I don’t condone those sort of actions, obviously, but what caused the protests?

The total ineptitude of Lennon and the ‘coaching’ staff and a real disconnect between the supporters and the club.

Ordinary, decent supporters are being taken for mugs, again and again.

You carry on defending the Board.

    Have a good day.

Thanks for putting the banner up i would never have know about it otherwise .

Do the GB have shares in or own a printing company .

They are quite imaginative i must say .

  7. Neil Lennon is bound to blame everyone else, everybody else blames everyone and anyone, why should he be any different.

Imagine he really was to open up on where the bodies are buried?

Of course like Tony Mowbray and others including Brendan Rodgers we’ll never know, due to his confidentiality clause which would see them in court faster than Sevc.

    They make a valid point.

    So not pointless.

Can they change or influence anything?

No. There’s probably only one individual, at the very, very most five individuals who can change or influence anything at Celtic.

  10. No wonder Neil Lennon highlights this “new breed”of “joyless” supporters. We all know where they are – the GB, Celtic Trust and all the other political factions who use the good name of Celtic as a platform. Oh for the days when we were all just Celtic supporters.

I thought nothing could ever dilute my total Celtic love affair that started when I first headed for Celtic Park at the age of eight….however I have nothing personally in common with some of these people. Their behaviour and outlook on life is completely foreign to me. I feel less Celtic with them around me.

I must admit that I think it is slightly disingenuous to only refer to Neil’s one season of CL glory when reminiscing of his first stint at the club.

Do we forget Braga, Utrecht and Sion (saved by the bell there). We finished 3rd in a Europa League group and 4th in a middling CL group in his other CL season. We had various domestic upsets and, in case we all forget, Neil may very well have been 45 minutes away from getting the sack down in Kilmarnock.

Neil was not able to get a decent job down south because he was inconsistent. Some great nights and results, mixed with some very poor results against mediocre opposition.

This trend continued in his second stint.

I also find the line that BR left for the money but that Neil is a great Celtic man, difficult to accept. Neil knew he was not going to win the league in the TIAR season. It was all but over at New Year. Rather than doing the honourable thing, as you would expect a ‘real’ Celtic man to do, and resign when there was an opportunity for someone to turn things around, he remained in situ, only resigning 2 games before the league was lost. He should have stuck it out and been the manager when the league was lost. He exited stage left for Kennedy to take that honour.

More generally, it is not all Neil’s fault. He is an average manager but a Celtic fan. We would all take the opportunity to manage Celtic once if presented to us (nevermind twice). He was a cheap, pliable option for our Board and PL; Neil had no bargaining power. He was indebted to them for getting the job.

In his interview he speaks of the difficulties of not choosing his backroom team – that all but corroborates Neil’s lack of power at the club.

  12. IniquitousIV on

I seem to recollect Neil Lennon preseason stating that he would be emphasizing to his players ‘before every game’ how hugely important winning the ten would be. How can he now bleat that the ‘new breed’ of supporters had an unhealthy obsession with it? Revisionist history and zero self perception right there. As Bada said, he would be better off keeping his head down and staying silent.

  13. onenightinlisbon on

Lennon is doing exactly what he did during last season and passing the buck to everyone but himself.

    Arrogance personified.

I hope the green brigade has a 102 days banner with the invisible chairman Bankier. What does he do anyway. Waste of a good job.

Danso 1818 ! you rarely get a reply to your posts!! put a wee post that’s against the cult , Guarantee at least two replies, three if the lions bore isna replying to his flock

aw diddums.you not getting the attention you seek since Gerry from the brig suggested you do one. ah poor you.poor poor sad you.

  20. Lennon is spot on with his assessment!!

Some Celtic fans are spoiled entitled little media sheep , yes green brigade and I’m impressed you can count and put it on a banner!

Remember when Rangers lost the chance to winning 10iar? I don’t remember the same hysteria around that.

Celtic lost the 10 in this order – Poor recruitment and playing staff decisions, COVID, Injuries – UNPRECEDENTED combination of circumstances. Rangers improved but difficult to judge since they were never under any pressure – they got plenty of help along the way.

Look at how the media reacted to Celtic last season – do you think the same psychological warfare would have been played if rangers went through the same – OF COURSE NOT.

The media hardly mentioned the serious affects covid and injuries had on the team at CRITICAL moments in the season – we could never field a defence and lost key players in the team (Eduard, Julien, Biton , El Hamed, Christie etc…) – NOT TEAM AND NO MANAGER ON THR PLANET COULD SOLVE THAT PROBLEM.

Accept it and move on – There should be banners all over Celtic park THANKING the board and management for 9IAR and 4 trebles – let me repeat that in case it hasn’t quite sunk in – 2nd 9IAR and 4 trebles in a row – this is an UNBELIEVABLE achievement.

In the states those teams are classified as Dynasties!

STOP getting sucked in by the biased sensationalist media and radio phone in.

START being grateful for supporting the Glasgow Celtic , its culture and its fight for social justice !

Finally, Green brigade do not support celtic – they hinder and hurt Celtic and do NOT represent the voice of most celtic fans.

Hail Hail – lets get behind the team and someone please organize better media response to the garbage pointed in Scotland (preferably a new celtic media team)

  21. If you can’t stand the uncomfortable criticism then don’t dish it out in the first place.

What he’s being criticized for is incredibly mild compared to what he’s had to suffer over the last 12 months

It’s a wonder that Neil Lennon (bombs and bullets through the post, attacked in the street and pitch side, departing hero in 2014) isn’t more bitter.

  22. Funny old world where it’s ok to completely destroy someone online then suggest they have no right to express an opinion in their own defense.

    That’s just wrong isn’t it?

  23. You get the itch. I love football, I love watching it. I think I have a lot to offer if I can get my own staff in. It was difficult going into Celtic without anyone and inheriting a staff. It was challenging to make that work and we did. For 18 months it worked perfectly.

I think it’s always important to have someone with the same sort of philosophies and ideas as you. John Kennedy was very, very good but the whole staff side of it was inherited. And I went in at a really, really delicate time after Brendan [Rodgers].

I’ve had a brilliant time in Glasgow but I want a new challenge. I’ve been a mainstay in Scottish football for a long time, since 2000 really. I’ve had an amazing time. Very, very successful, but it’s exhausted my avenues in Scotland now I think.

I’ll be looking for something to stimulate me again. I’m at an interesting point in life, coming up to that marker and then there is another new life ahead.
