Alan Thompson, scourge of the Rangers

438

If you’ve been on Celtic Quick News since the beginning you’ll know how high a regard I hold Alan Thompson.  In 2004 I called him the most influential Celtic midfielder since the Lisbon Lions.  His goal won us our first Champions League points, he scored the only goal of our two-legged Uefa Cup tie against Barcelona in 2004, he has scored two thirds of our competitive goals on German soil and his deliveries for Larsson, Hartson and Sutton were legendary.  His free kicks and corners always threatened.

He also punished Rangers more than any other midfield player in the last 40 years, scoring seven goals against them.

We have had many more skilful midfielders, but no one since the Lions came closed to making the impact of Alan Thompson in the games it really mattered.

We wish him well.

Has Kenny McDowell not had his chance already?

I suppose if he’d left us to coach anyone else but the huns, I might be more open to his return.

I would have thought Steve Clarke would get a managerial job somewhere. Not sure he would want to be a first team coach

Canni see past either Spain, Germany or Holland.

Still think Spain are too strong for the rest. I think it will depend on how much a young German team have improved from two years ago. Holland need to be a bit more expensive- if they are then they could beat Spain.

Dark Horses: France- a big improvement under Blanc & they still have some great players.

Italy- you can never write them off entirely.

Ukraine- might be tough to beat on their own patch. Can’t see them winning it though.

Portugal- got to be a decent shout with Ronaldo in their team.

Russia- did well four years ago. Still a good team. But Arshevan looks a shadow of the player he was at Zenit.

I’ve got my Ireland shirt ready. Crate of beer. Drinking Jameson’s whiskey for next few weeks before going back to the malt. Pity big Boruc has fallen out with the Poland coach. Hope Sammi does well. Come on Aiden…come on you boys in green!

  16. Sorry AT had to go and especially sorry the way it appears to have come to an end. Alan was a great Celtic player who really loved giving it to them ….and, by God, he did it often enough.

I just hope ending could be an amicable one. Would be good if Celtic could simply pay out his 12 month rolling contract but there again none of us know the real reason for his departure.

I, for one, do not plan to speculate but simply end by wishing AT all the very best for the future. I’m sure he’ll get a huge welcome from the fans any time he returns to CP- if he can find it in himself to do so.

  17. Probably a step too far for big John Kennedy but what a story that would be if it came to pass.

I can’t wish enough good things to come for that young man, hence my post.

  19. expensive? expansive.

The Dutch were expensive two year ago when a put 40 smackers oan them- still think they could have won that game if they had just attacked a bit more.

  20. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

If AT has personal problems, surely Celtic would have tried to address them and help him before it came to this?

    Perhaps.

I have no idea why AT has been asked to leave the club – not sure anyone does

    HOWEVER

Your rant about our Board – I have a reasonable idea about the work our Board does – as does anyone concerned with our club – we are a Public Company so you can see the work done by our Board

According to various independent sources (financial institutions UEFA/FIFA) our club is very well run

So you will forgive me if I don’t listen to your view – democracy allows all of us an opinion – unfortunately some people engage mouth (or keyboard) before understanding the facts

It may have escaped your attention but, the GB announced that they would NOT, buy their SB’s until….they see which way the Celtic hierarchy will vote re: The Hun Saga!

I’m only pointing out that…I share the GB’s suspicion’s of the Celtic hierarchy and, I’m delighted that at least, the GB section of CP can recognise – wolve’s in sheep’s clothing.

He was reserve team coach when he left us to join the “Rangers revolution”. First team coach at Celtic would be an improvement and I don’t think he bears us any ill feeling at all.

If he’s the best man for the job it doesn’t matter to me where he came from.

Just look at Dylan McGeough. He left us to go to Rangers and he returned.
