Alan Thompson, scourge of the Rangers

438

If you’ve been on Celtic Quick News since the beginning you’ll know how high a regard I hold Alan Thompson.  In 2004 I called him the most influential Celtic midfielder since the Lisbon Lions.  His goal won us our first Champions League points, he scored the only goal of our two-legged Uefa Cup tie against Barcelona in 2004, he has scored two thirds of our competitive goals on German soil and his deliveries for Larsson, Hartson and Sutton were legendary.  His free kicks and corners always threatened.

He also punished Rangers more than any other midfield player in the last 40 years, scoring seven goals against them.

We have had many more skilful midfielders, but no one since the Lions came closed to making the impact of Alan Thompson in the games it really mattered.

We wish him well.

I agree with Mort – the reasons for his departure are probably best being kept in private – however, I suspect the red tops will twist this in a perverse way of character assasinating Neil Lennon.

How many stories have been written which were a figment of the ‘journalists’ imagination but was given some sort of credibility because of what a ‘source’ is quoted as saying.

Italian bookies have Spain and Germany so far ahead of the rest that the other teams must only be going to make up the numbers..

I think there will be an upset —— I just can’t decide who [ there is money to be made ! ].

    France for me. 12/1

And Giroud of France for top scorer. Finished top scorer in Ligue A last season. English bookies blinkered by Benzema. Giroud is 50/1.

The Green Brigade have since said that they would renew their season tickets and so far Section 111 has got 1042 renewals out of a possible 1074.

Season ticket sales in the surrounding areas are also very strong with less than 10% availability.

The beauty of Twitter is it lets “news” get out there almost instantaneously in 140 characters.

The trouble with Twitter is it lets judgement get out there just as fast but with no no limit on the characters used to form the judgement or the character of the character making the judgement based on 140 characters.

Beat that for character assasination. :)

  8. Notice on the DR website the fans hotline has not been updated since last Wednesday.

Now that there is a potentially negative Celtic story you can be guaranteed it will magically appear tomorrow with the AT story being it’s main subject.

IF, as you say our club is well run….why then, have we won just 1 title in 4 years ?

    Now, I don’t know about you but…a balance-sheet is NOT a trophy!

    ————————————————————————————–

I think we are now starting to see why, our club had one arm tied behind it’s back.

Those titles will soon be on their way home.

    i

  16. Maybe, just maybe we have only won 1 in 4 due to some slightly dubious shenanigans going on elsewhere, maybe even by the team that `won` the other 75% of them, with an odd one or fifty six honest guv mistakes by `other` sources thrown in. Balance sheets don`t win trophies, just ask the 75 percenters. They were `won` without a healthy balance sheet. The current Champions who do have a healthy one were cheated out of the others. fact in capital letters.

    2 Reasons

1 – Celtic got the wrong man with Mowbry – fixed it with Lennon and were unlucky not to win the league last year(Inverness)

2 – Celtic have been competing for 12 years (possibly longer) against a team that has cheated the system, has cheated sport and has cheated you and me

It makes MON success even more important

You support a team in good shape – we are not perfect – but we are very healthy

By the way our balance sheet is’nt brilliant – but its a lot better than THEIRS

With regards to replacing Thommo I thinks its vital we do NOT go for someone else on the same wave length as our three bhoys.

Lenny was doing the right thing by going out to have a look at what Lille do, what he needs is turning to someone in dug out for an opinion and hearing one which differs to that of his own.

One of my concerns about the management team is because they all seem to agree and disagree with the same things – which whilst you obviously need to help produce a cohesive team.

When they bang heads together to try and think of ways to improve the system, when a foreign based coach might be telling them its the system itself which needs changed.

Quirez and Ferguson rarely saw eye to eye – however they werent there to be best friends they were there to insure Man Utd were successful. Quirez challenged Fergusons thinking which helped him modernise his philosophies which delivered success domestically and in europe.

Id like to see us doing something similar – bringing in a coach who has built his wealth of experience on the continent

    ‘Just read the club statement.’

I suspect it was prompted by the statement fromThomo’s solicitors.

The wisdom in issuing the original statement eludes me. It hardly serves Thomo’s interests, though I suppose it does help raise the profile of the solicitors. Not that that would be the motivation. Obviously.

Hopefully both sides can now resolve the matter in private.

I believe I would be correct in saying that the huns have cheated the system for 140 years!

Thats why we have to be the best we can be.

Thats not been the case imo.

Too many project- type players since they got their fingers burnt after splashing out £4 mill on Broony and, having to wait 4 years before he hit a purple-patch imo.
