Alan Thompson, scourge of the Rangers

438

If you’ve been on Celtic Quick News since the beginning you’ll know how high a regard I hold Alan Thompson.  In 2004 I called him the most influential Celtic midfielder since the Lisbon Lions.  His goal won us our first Champions League points, he scored the only goal of our two-legged Uefa Cup tie against Barcelona in 2004, he has scored two thirds of our competitive goals on German soil and his deliveries for Larsson, Hartson and Sutton were legendary.  His free kicks and corners always threatened.

He also punished Rangers more than any other midfield player in the last 40 years, scoring seven goals against them.

We have had many more skilful midfielders, but no one since the Lions came closed to making the impact of Alan Thompson in the games it really mattered.

We wish him well.

Too many project- type players since they got their fingers burnt after splashing out £4 mill on Broony and, having to wait 4 years before he hit a purple-patch imo.

Mathews, Izzie, 67, Kayal, Forrest, Hooper, Commons ?

    As for the rest….

Who would you consider to be some of the other “project players” who have failed?

Bear in mind sometimes it can take a year or 2 before a player hits top form, e.g. Charlie Mulgrew.

  12. KJam – been 3 times before but not been since 2007. We usually go in a big group but this time it’s just me and the Mrs so we are treating ourselves to a bit of luxury in Born and then down to Sitges for a few days for recovery and then back to Barca in a nice hotel.

We won’t be going to all the events, in fact we only made it to all 3 day events once – walked in done a circuit and walked out with a wristband! lol

Would like to see Willie McStay back, thought he would have got a job when he resigned from ujpest.

  16. Hoops_Neil_Lennon_diditagain on

McStay was appointed assistant manager of Stockport County in July 2011 by manager Dietmar Hamann. After Hamann’s departure, in November, new manager Jim Gannon kept McStay on as his assistant.

Only Ki of which we could consider “project style players”. All had good reputations and have to varying degrees been successful at Celtic.

    Stokes – Freebie and 40 goals in 82 games is a pretty good return;

Ki – Excellent player and brings something different to the Celtic team. his style may not always suit us but if he moves off he will do so at a great profit so can’t say his signing was flawed.

Ledley – Freebie and versatile. Not my first pick for Central midfield but can play in a number of positions and has helped the team as a whole. Also pops up with some important goals. Good signing for me.

Cha – Granted he isn’t as good as others in that position but didn’t cost much and will be remembered for me for the goal he scored against St Johnstone last year on 90mins when we were toiling.

Samaras – Has just had his best ever season at Celtic and brings something different to the team. A good signing

Commons – Suffered from 2nd season syndrome but first season was excellent and showed signs of returning to form at end of season. If he can replicate his first season’s form, he’ll be a great asset.

Loovens – Was never his biggest fan but he has done ok. Wouldn’t be devestated if he was replaced by someone of a better quality.

Sorry to say but if you don’t see what Ledley does then I’m pretty sure you don’t really know very much about playing football.

    Sorry.
