Alarm bells ringing as qualifiers kick in

556

The most striking aspect of yesterday’s games came from Pittodrie and Tynecastle.  Aberdeen scored twice in second half stoppage time to secure a home win over Fola Esch from Luxembourg (good grief).  Hearts came from behind with the assistance of a penalty and an own goal to secure a narrow win over Estonians, Infonet.

Infonet finished fourth in the Estonian league last season, well below possible Celtic Champions League qualifier opponents, Flora, and will fancy their chances of knocking Hearts out.

None of this means that Aberdeen, Hearts of Celtic have an equal in Estonia or Luxembourg, but it’s a testament to how bizarre playing football before you have completed preseason is.  Even very well-run clubs like Southampton, who were humbled a year ago by Erik Sviatchenko and his Midtjylland pals, can find themselves out of Europe before they realise they are in a competition.

Celtic are likely to be playing the Estonian champions in 11 or 12 days.  If they overcome that they will face a vastly stiffer test in three weeks time.

Yesterday’s exercise in Slovenia will hopefully blow some cobwebs away but FC Flora are 17 games into their league season, that fact alone should give Brendan Rodgers plenty to consider.  Aberdeen’s toils in particular disturbed me.

Many thanks to all who contributed to the fantastic raffle competition yesterday, you’ve raised £375 already.  A reminder……

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

We have a £5-a-ticket raffle to win the chance to appear in your very own team photo, alongside the Celtic players and management at the preseason photocall for 2016-17.

You will then meet treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, who will give you a personal tour of Celtic Park.

Celtic will provide you with a strip, which you will retain, and you will receive your team photograph, framed and signed by the team, on a specially prepared mount.

Your donations go to Celtic FC Foundation, to support their work in Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty. The Foundation deliver often life-changing support and opportunities to children and adults in Scotland, Ireland, the rest of the UK and in many needy areas of the globe.

Buy your ticket at MyDonate here. You can enter as many times as you like, but only donations of £5 or higher will be entered into the raffle.

You.  The team.  The management.  Getting your squad photo taken.  And getting a strip!

You’ll have had worse days.

  1. Maybe the stadium is getting a good lick of paint.dont think it has been done since Celtic Park was redeveloped under Fergus.quite shabby

    DALLAS DALLAS…

“I passed Celtic Park about an hour ago and both big screens had been taken down.”

PL’s getting them installed in his two massive ‘cinema’ rooms at home. ;))

  3. The screens were left on during the second world war to guide the German bombers.

  4. Headtheball

Yip, if they switched on their sat navs they would have been guided straight to the shipyards, the same shipyards where the huns were dodging the draft.

  5. I believe that Celtic are also carrying out work on the underground tunnel leading to the Vatican.

    Very hush-hush.

Tallybhoy…there is another tunnel, a heated one which connects to big Pete’s heated driveway…

  7. Such a lot of brave talking from Wales.

But I think a courageous squad is abou to meet its limitations tonight.

The English media seem to think Jason Denayer’s inclusion ‘weakens’ the Belgians.

Au contraire (see what i did there, europhiles?) – I think he’s a better player than Vertonghen or Vermahlen. Fiver on him to nod one in.

The Welsh adventure ends this evening. They’ll do well to avoid a pumping.

2 or 3 nil to Belgium.

Would be surprised if I’m wrong. Just can’t see the Belgians repeating their abject Italian performance, or Wales bettering their Russian night. England dominated them, scraped it.

Belgium may take them apart. But, good luck to Bale and his lads.

The exiled tim, the huns and reserved occupations , who would have thought.

My dad , who is 90, explained to me the reasons why the huns were referred to as huns.

In world war 1 , the Germans were known as the hun and as the now defunct club fans were loyal to the British monarchy , who were German thus the Hun reference for them.

He also told me that the numbers of hun players not fighting the hun in both wars but working in the shipyards etc , also played a part in them being called huns.

A Killie fan I know refers to the hoards as the the Boche, the French term for the Germans in World War 1. By the way he loathes the huns and doesn’t like us as a rival club.

So maybe my dad’s explanation of why the huns were called huns is right.

When I was a young fella my Da never wanted me to follow Celtic, he told me that I would always regret it, I didn’t know what he meant till much later in life.

Many years later we had a discussion about it, I told him I had not a single regret, he admitted that regret was the wrong word, but I fully understood what he meant, this was in the early 60s, and 50 odd years later the bias is as bad as it ever was, how feckin sad is that.

The term hun fits them like a glove imo.

Just had a look etims twitter.

We have signed a ypung Irish forward , Tommy Caffrey from Ballyfermot and St Francis plus Stuart Findlay has tweeted his Celtic career has ended and stated he had amazing experiences with us.

Sad to see him go but with the likes of Fiacre Kellecher and Jamie McCart now moving into the develoement squad , it was probably right for Stuart to leave to get first team football.

The exiled tim, thanks for your reply.

Our experiences watching Celtic between 1990 to 2000, 1998 excepted, were torturous including all the financial doping going on, but I don’t feel it was as bad as what our supporters went through from 1946 – 1965 , with a few exceptional wins in that period.

In the workplaces it has dissipated to a certain degree, as for when the reincarnation appear…it will be as bad as ever if not worse, as thems don’t like getting humped and that will happen on several occasions next season.

The old firm term will be used on any such time to try and drag us down with the Orc army. HH

  21. From memory of football since late fifties I can only remember the term Huns being attributed to ‘them’ in the middle sixties. Most memorable on the Saturday afternoon when word came through on transistor radios that Berwick Rangers had beaten them and chants of ‘The Huns are oot the cup’ rang round Celtic Park

Sipsini, the phrase used to describe ourselves and the now defunct club will never be used by me again.

Even when that phrase was applicable ,I stopped using it instead using Celtic ‘rangers’ games. Myself and others were of the opinion we were guilty by association if we used it.
