Alcohol, if you’re rich enough

953

As you and I know, alcohol is sold at football games.  If you are in a corporate seat, you can drink before kick-off, at halftime and again at fulltime.  Prohibition only applies to the cheap seats.

Alcohol-related issues remain a problem in towns across Scotland in the hours after big games, but suggestions by First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, that there is a potential correlation between those drinking from cheap seats at games and violence (including the domestic kind) are simply unfounded.  People are free to get tanked up before and after games, the wealthy can do so during games, and millions can do so in pubs and at home while watching games on TV.

I have some concerns about reintroducing alcohol for the rest of us.  Alcohol requires appropriate infrastructure and ambiance – like there is at the Kerrydale Suite, for example.  The North Stand Upper, where I sit, does not have the space, supervision capabilities, or even the toilets to become an appropriate venue to encourage the consumption of any more fluids.  In the 20 years it’s been up, it’s never had enough paper towels to make it to halftime, and may God go with you, if you need to spend a longer visit, but don’t let that be a reason to stop the rest of you.

Modern football stadiums have many safe areas where alcohol can be consumed.  Those who cannot handle their drink, would find themselves supervised to within an inch of a football banning order. Scotland needs to learn what a healthy attitude to alcohol looks like – check out the Kerrydale Suite for a glimpse.

Build the lounges, toilets, and grills.  Put carpet down, dress stewards in black ties, have them welcome fans as “Sir” or “Madam”, treat football fans like responsible adults.  It works in the hospitality areas and in the Kerrydale Suite, it’ll work from Palmerston to Peterhead.

Thank you for the tremendous response yesterday to the line-up for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner.  We have (St) Packy Bonnar, Tommy Coyne and Joe Miller for a Q&A, an unmissable address on Jock Stein by Archie Macpherson, and Celtic’s First Lady of Song, Patricia Ferns, for those of you who enjoy a song or dance.  Let me know if you’re still looking for tickets,
celticquicknews@gmail.com

And Celtic, how hard can it be to put enough paper towels in the toilets? I love the family approach the club has now, but bringing kids means dealing with the toilets, and that’s never a highlight of the trip.

Glasgow Council had to reject it when it was ‘called-in’ by the Scottish executive – it was therefore taken out of Glasgow’s hands.

Hepburn then comments particularly on the Celtic application,

So the ‘tosh’ is in blaming Glasgow Council for rejecting the certificate, when it had no option after the SNP called it in.

I can therefore confirm that under the approval of any application for standing in a football ground lies with the relevant local authority.”

I don’t think anymore needs said on the matter.

This isn’t a critical comment for once. It’s a genuine question.

Most governments in any country you care to mention have their share of critics, usually to an extent that their approval rating falls below 50%,their every action pulled to shreds by political commentators and the voting public alike.

Do you,as I do,find it a major concern that the SNP can do no wrong in the eyes of the electorate?

Apart from OBAF Act,few on here are critical. Indeed, most are clearly supportive. And I have to be honest and say that the typical poster on here,in my experience, would not be in the SNP catchment five or ten years ago.

I have absolutely no wish to get drawn into your pointless, infuriating arguments but did you actually read what West End of East End wrote and the quotes he provides? The actually words I mean. They are absolutely clear in what they mean. They flatly contradict what you believed was your conclusive proof of government interference in the matter. Incidentally the quote you provided to Tom hardly seemed, in my opinion, to be the ‘smoking gun’ you believed it to be. As I say my opinion.

With respect I think the bhoy missed a trick with his questions

When he asks if the media influenced my decision how to vote, I answered yes.

It did not CHANGE my decision. The incessant bias in the media REINFORCED my decision.

Judging by his other questions, that may have been an interesting theme to explore ie rather than whether the media influenced uncertain voters, to what extent did they reinforce the committed.

I wish him well in his efforts.

Alfie Noakes – Unless I’m missing something, GCC refused the application saying it was for the Scottish Government to decide. The SG replied to Charles Kennedy below that it was for the local authority to decide. CK ask JH to get involved as it came to an impasse. This was December 15th 2014 so fairly recent. Charlie Kennedy is one of the few politicians I have some trust in so hopefully can mediate this to a successful conclusion.

    “gift to the opposition”

    ———————————————————————————————–

There is no opposition worthy of the name on this forum – people who have a go at me only name-call and repeat their Labour/Murphy-hating tripe.

I very rarely get a point for point argument on here – because they have no coherent points to make.

My only real gift to the ‘opposition’ was the ‘gubbing’ in the nonsense Neverendum – I am proud to say that through Better Together I played my part.

I will also play my part for Labour in the General Election, where all the smug SNP voters, just like in September, will wake up to yet another hangover.

THANK GOD for the 2 million.

The so-called ‘missing’ 750k voters who ‘sneaked out’ of their poll tax evading boltholes to vote for YESNP and be subsequently ‘pardoned’ by Salmond, have ‘sneaked’ back in again, as there will be no such pardon forthcoming on the Council Tax.

THANK GOD for the local tax payers who pay their dues in order that much-needed local services can be provided for the poor, the young, the disabled and the old.

Local authorities, not the Scottish Government should be giving permission to applications. If that is indeed the case then the Scottish Government should not interfere.

    He also states though that:

“I welcome the clarification from the Scottish Government regarding safe standing at football grounds[that it’s an issue for the local authorities]. That means that here in the Highlands it is the Highland Council that has the authority to enable clubs to introduce safe standing, such as Ross County FC in my constituency”

Ultimately it’s clear that the Scottish Minister considers it an issue for the local authorities. What is not clear is why GCC thought it a matter for central government.

At the end of the day a decision will be reached, and if one thing comes from all of this it’s that it’s explanation will need to be totally clear.

    2) No one denied the Scots anything – in fact we had a free and unfettered choice and chose to REJECT separation from our brothers and sisters in these islands.

    3) It is LABOUR who has won ALL the major socialist battles in this country since 1900

    4) The ONE-ISSUE rabble that is the SNP have NEVER done ANYTHING, or even proposed, ANYTHING,that was/is directly beneficial at the working class, or poorest in our country.

    5) The SNP stupid ‘it will be alright on the night’ tripe peddled during the Neverendum, would have seen Scotland thrown into bankruptcy, in a Greece-like state, and thousands thrown on the unemployment scrap-heap.

    6) Pensions would have devalued just as quick as the oil price ( sorry we don’t talk about that any more)

  26. West End of East End on

Ernie Lynch – You can read it that way if you cherry pick quotes. As GCC refused saying it was SE decision who then replied saying it wasn’t, Charlie asked for clarity. Still can’t find the smoking gun…

The Scottish Football Association gave the green light to safe-standing in December 2011. However, in August Celtic FC had their application rejected by Glasgow City Council. Confusion has arisen as the Safety Advisory Group, chaired by Glasgow City Council, stated safe-standing matters may be a matter for the Scottish Government and not the local authority.

Charles Kennedy wrote to the Scottish Government Minister for Sport, Health Improvement and Mental Health, Jamie Hepburn MSP, calling for the Scottish Government to clarify the position.

Responding to Mr Kennedy’s letter, Jamie Hepburn MSP said:

“The Scottish Government position remains that under the current arrangements it is for local authorities to ensure that stadia within their areas offer safe accommodation for supporters when granting Safety Certificates in accordance with the Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975.

He ignores votes (on fracking or the bedroom tax I forget, they meld into one and other) and gets a photo opp at Pittodrie instead?

He spent years getting a free education (without graduating) and then screwed all the students over the grant and then moved into his role as professional politician. What a socialist.

He is one of the biggest expenses claimants (including for a bottle of IRN BRU).

He was and is one of the biggest supporters of the Iraq war.

He blames the SNP because his so called team of advisors (stop laughing at the back) mis-read government statistics while he made a video insulting hospital staff and then pulled it with little or no media coverage of the lies they told?
