Alcohol, poor facilities and dignity at Ibrox

1766

I’m a bit confused at the chat this morning of reintroducing the sale of alcohol at football games.  Alcohol is available for sale at games at Celtic Park, you just need to have a ticket for an expensive enough seat.  If you’re in the cheap seats, you get to queue to pay for some cola.  Is people’s ability to pay an indication of their likelihood to behave in a dangerous or criminal way with some alcohol in their blood?

This implication has always troubled me.

Alcohol, wherever it is sold, inevitably leads to over-indulgence and potentially dangerous behaviour, and requires strong stewarding, whether that is at a night club, or in the No. 7 restaurant.  Scotland’s licenced premises have changed beyond recognition in recent decades.  They are increasingly well-lit, family friendly and safe places to be.  They now sell better beer too, but our nation’s problem with alcohol remains acute.

Society needs to be educated on how to use alcohol responsibly; good venues are part of the solution.

While we are on the subject of facilities at Celtic Park…….  I go months without buying food or drink in the North Stand, Upper, for good reason.  Last week (pestered by one of the boys), I left for the kiosk with 40 minutes on the clock, didn’t get served until the second half started, only to be told there were no hotdogs or pies left.

You know me, I’m not one to get angry at Celtic, but the sheer frustration pushed me over the top, and I didn’t have a drink!  If you’re charging circa £4 for something that’s costing less than £1, make sure stock is sufficient.  Have two people serving each side of the kiosk, not two on one side, with a single person making hardly a dent on the queue at the other.

Needed to get that off my chest.

The ‘news’ this morning that Rangers International are trying to sack commercial director, Imran Ahmad, is more curious for being news than in itself.  Is it even possible for this news to be anything other than a leak from a director against another director?  These newspaper people don’t do irony, they just take careful notes and go write up their story.

This whole episode is beginning to feel a bit like sitting out the back when the neighbours don’t realise their bedroom window is open.  You can hear the noises and you looked up and caught a glance at something horrific looking.  It’s something you’ll laugh about later with your friends but these people really need to acquire some dignity.

  2. Well done Celtic for the magnificent £100 reduction gesture on season tickets this week.

That said….don’t get me started on Upper North Stand catering……gave up a long time ago after continuous unsuccessful attempts to buy pies….including once BEFORE game started.

I take a disabled pal occasionally to games and I’ve yet to encounter them running out of food there. Know there is a big difference with available space etc but Upper North is a total joke when it comes to catering.

Prices are a serious rip off in % hike up terms as well…..you would expect to pay a bit more since I suppose you’re in a ‘captive’ market but my God….the % uplift on say Greggs must be more than 100%…..

Just realised that I probably have an unhealthy relationship with pies…..

    Totally agree with you.

Everytime I’m in the stadium I’m reminded of Fergus’s Legacy.

The boo-boys when he unfurled the flag after we prevented 10 in a row was shameful.

If anyone should be invited back to unfurl the league flag it’s him..

  8. I’m all in favour of improvement to what is offered to those who want refreshment of any sort at Celtic Park. They never have catered properly for the ordinary fan. They should make that a real priority. Personally, I would prefer that drink wasn’t available but I would be quite happy if it were and that those who abused it (and then abused their fellow supporters with intolerable behaviour) should be severely punished. Having their ST removed would be a start.

It’s around 20 years since Fergus helped put us back on track

Last year the honour rightly went to Sean Fallon

This time we should take the opportunity to honour Fergus McCann

and a goal from the game appears in Ryan’s Daughter, when they are (I think) in a bar and John Mills glances at the TV

  11. dancingbhoy,

I made the recommendation for precisely that for this season, when Sean Fallon was given the honour. We owe Fergus McCann big, big time and particularly for that booing. I still cringe at the memory.

  12. I think the answer is to have a standing section where you can drink and eat, play games on your phone and dance about. Perfect!

  13. With regards to the half time refreshment chat, and apologies if it has been mentioned why don’t the club bring out a card that you can top up, You have to buy it with at least £20 on it for example and can top up £5,£10 or £20 online as the season progresses. Club would make money on unspent money. You could also give the card users a 5% or 10% discount on items as they are putting money into club in advance. Then on match days you could have self service terminals where you place your order, swipe your card and get a reciept and then at the food kiosks they would just have a screen a bit like Argos where you get your items. They system would need fine tuning to stop long queues and trials so it runs smoothly. Do you think there would be an uptake in something like that?

  14. The support booing Fergus was our lowest ever point.

We owe the wee mhan big time.

In fact he cannot be repaid !

Don’t know if mentioned already, but Celtic just confirmed to me that if they move you to a dearer seat you need to pay the price for that seat and not your old one.

Utter joke. Apparently lots of people want to move to dearer seats!

    ——————————————-

Just spoke to No2 daughters man, told the same £500 ST being moved with 3 friends long term ST holders, only place they can be accomodated together near where they are is £600 STs.

115 to 114 they are meeting tomorrow to discuss but 3 out of 4 already decided not to renew and go pay as you go.

  19. Why anybody would want to queue for food a Celtic park is beyond me.

Catering is amongst the worst I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been to t in the park! I think it would be fair to say the profits are being maximised in that dept.

    Re Catering.

I was in John Stein upper on Sunday and went to for pie and bovril and Diet coke 5 mins before half time finished, i didn’t get served until after 1st goal which was 15 mins into 2nd half, when i got to the front i was told no diet coke left, i then had to run accross and get a diet coke at other kiosk. No communication whatsoever and amount of staff on was ridiculous, I had a mother next to me in the queue who took her son looked about 8 or 9 for the first time who was appalled at the service.

To wait 35 mins to get served was shocking.

Thank god you said it as its now off my chest as well.

Keep your bums on your seats and pounds in your pockets and the penny will drop.

  25. For over a century it has been possible to order and pay for interval drinks in the theatre before the start of the show, and have them lined up and waiting for you.

Wagamama, the Japanese restaurant chain, have used radio transmitted orders from restaurant floor to kitchen for over 20yrs in London.

Celtic need to come up to date.

Thanks, I can remember Fergus coming back to unfurl the flag being discussed on here on a number of occasions. ( Long time lurker )

I remember the day well, huge day for the club, we were back at the top. The wee man didn’t deserve the boos and fortunately the crowd rose to overcome them.
