Alert on the left, the gravy in Ronny’s pie

761

I’m largely ignoring the defensive lapses of last night. There will be at least two changes for the Champions League, and everyone will be far more attentive. It was, though, a concern that both Kilmarnock goals came as a result of Celtic’s left-hand-side being breached.

Malmo’s Age Hareide will have noted this, and whatever attacking resources he deploys next week are likely to try to exploit a perceived weakness. Ronny will have a choice: Izzie or Charlie? My money’s on the latter.

Tom Rogic didn’t have the perfect game but it was good to see him take so much responsibility. He’s looked like the office junior of the Celtic midfield on previous outings, as did Nir Bitton for most of his early games. If Rogic has genuine talent, we need to let him find his feet in games like these.

Ronny Deila answered all questions after the game but gave little away. I hope his dismissal of injury worries was accurate. Kris Commons is the gravy in his pie. We are capable of beating anyone without Kris, but we need him doing his thing if we are to take a comfortable victory to Sweden.

Yesterday I was looking over Celtic’s form in November 2006 after doing an interview for a French magazine, who are writing a piece on Shunsuke Nakamura. That was the month Naka scored the goal which sent us top of the group and into the knock-out rounds of the Champions League for the first time – with a game to spare, no less.

It’s less well remembered that earlier that month we went out of the League Cup after losing at home to Falkirk on penalties, or that we couldn’t win at Easter Road immediately after the Champions League win.

Indifferent performances and results surround some of our greatest European performances. Getting it right when it counts is what matters.

  1. I heard he was dead on

Remember the days when Gordon Strachan would sign loads of midfielders and everyone wondered why?

  2. THE GREEN MAN on 13TH AUGUST 2015 12:33 PM

Why would we swap Dylan for Scott Allen…considering Dylan is a superior player

In your opinion. The manager obviously doesn’t rate McGeouch, time will tell if he rates Allan more.

  3. Scott Allan can play. Make no doubts about that. The boy has skill and class.

I believe the photo of him socialising with Sevco players was last season.

Sevco can;t afford to buy him. His Mrs just had a kid and I believe he doesn;t want to go South. Apart from the media reporting it Allan never ever came out and said he wanted to go to Sevco. He also knocked them back to sign for Hibs.

It’s an interesting move by Hibs who clearly feel he is untenable now in a Hibs shirt. Their fans really rate McGeouch so they can appease them by bringing him in. It’s smart negotiations by Dempster at Hibs. I would like to see McGregor on loan. Would Allan be more useful this season than McGeouch or McGregor? Yes I believe so. McGeouch isn;t even getting a seat on the bench and McGregor is not going to cut it. Allan has a similar style to Commons although he needs to add more goals. Depending on the fee it could be a very astute signing for the long season ahead. He will slot in like the United boys he is used to the Scottish game and knows our own players. If we can strike a decent deal I would go for it. The lad has real talent and with coaching could be a very very good player.

Commons injury may just see us push this one through as Allan can play in that position and he plays a lovely through ball. Interesting developments today.

  4. I like Scott Allen the footballer and remember when it was posted on CQN before the Championship play offs, months ago, that he would be signing for us.

Freed everywhere he’s played he has come a long way, I trust Celtic to make our player judgements rather than potentially prejudiced ‘fans’ like BFSDJ who promised the listeners that Scott Brown was signing for the old Rangers.

Celtic don’t do one upmanship, but there is only one big club in Scotland with money to buy, and I hope we do, in line with our open to all policy.

He must be a good player, if the rumour is true.

Personally, I also love a good GIRUY

Keyboard Mourinhos….Don’t you mean Celtic fans with an opinion?

    Who are you, Michael Kelly?

Whats next….will you be calling Celtic fans malcontents?

Sorry for having an opinion about my team.

    And that’s me being polite.

  6. Maybe we should be asking why we can’t adjust our formation to play 2 up front at times…..

  7. I’m offski….seems like ive upset some of Scott Allens relatives and supporters.

  9. I watched Scott Allan a few times last season. He’s definitely got the vision for a pass. However he didn’t look the quickest.

If it was a choice between him and Dylan then I would have him every time.I couldn’t care less what team he supported/supports.

If he’s up for a move to Celtic then I’d welcome him like every other new signing.

  10. THE GREEN MAN on 13TH AUGUST 2015 12:40 PM

Everyone’s an expert, nothing wrong with having opinions it’s just a bit tedious that every time we try to sign a player that plays in this country he’s slated before he plays. As I have said, IMO, Allan is a good player, don’t actually see the point in signing him as he plays in the area of the pitch we have more than enough players, however like any other supporter I have no idea what’s happening behind the scenes, who’s leaving, who’s going out on loan etc.

  11. Good Afternoon.

Not sure what to make of the Scott Allan story, but it would be funny to see the meltdown in Sevconia and the media if he committed his future to Celtic!

Meanwhile, here are a couple of recent pieces.

One on the abysmal promotion of the Scottish domestic game

And another on a laughable bit of liquidation-denial from a former Sevco employee.

Gary, I make a serious point….Scott Allen is not a great player, I don’t think he is good enough for Celtic.

    I don’t care that he is a mad hun….really:)

Its about quality, and he doesn’t have it…..if he did, he would be elsewhere.

So lets stop playing this silly PL race to the bottom strategy.

If we have a team full of SPL dross…we will do nothing.

Lets stop pretending that average players are better than they really are.

    A bit of perspective please.

  13. Afternoon folks,

Disappointed with the result last night but was pleased with Janko and Forrest who both played well.

I’m afraid, despite his recent domestic goalscoring record, that Leigh Griffiths will never be the no.9 that Celtic need in order to compete regularly and successfully in Europe (I.e qualifying for champions league and going on a half decent run in the Europa). He is a too lightweight and isn’t clinical enough when it comes to playing any opposition with a bit of class.

Strachan has always been reluctant to start him for Scotland and likewise Ronny for European games. The fact that he struggled to play regularly for Wolves tells you a lot and I sincerely don’t believe he would start for any English Premiership club (or if he’d even make any of the squads).

Really hope that Ronny realises that we need another, more potent, striker who turn half chances in to goals. The major problem is that they very rarely come cheap. It seems the Van Dijks and Bitons of this world are easier to unearth, we need our scouts to finally land a striker worthy of our ambitions.

just posted this from last blog,I’ll never learn.

I remember watching Celtic in 67 when they were at their extreme best and invincible in most games but were still beaten by Dundee Utd the only team to beat them that season, 2-3 and it happened twice, I don’t think there was as much of a rumpus then as there is now for drawing away from home to Kilmarnock.

Celtic aren’t invincible, there will always be a few glitches that happen every season, get over it, but to get personal with players and all the grandees above them it’s a sad day for me to read all the claptrap that’s been written since last night makes me think that there are a lot of guys on here that need to stop supporting Celtic or you will be having heart problems or the like.you know the old saying, it’s only a game.

I never slagged of any player that played last night,I’ve got over it,so should you.

  15. I make a simple but obvious point….If Hibs want to swap Scott Allen for Dylan, then id suggest they rate Dylan a better player….and now we are hearing the bs , that they want Calum as well.

    Surely its nonsense.

How can Scott Allen possibly improve Celtic, when a better player like Dylan couldn’t make his mark, and believe me, Dylan is a solid player….that’s why Hibs want him.

    Perspective please.

    HH

  16. Always thought it was strange McGeouch got a new contract, no chance of holding down a jersey…..

  17. The Green Man

I wouldn’t think it’s Hibs thinking Dylan is the better player, more of the have an unsettled player who they won’t sell to their closest rivals.

Good business for them I would think.

  18. GARY67 on 13TH AUGUST 2015 12:34 PM

If, and it is still a huge if, Scott Allan signs for us he will join the long line who have been slagged/written off by the keyboard Mourinhos on here. Gordon, Armstrong, Griffiths, GMS, Ciftci (see a pattern here?) and that’s only the current squad.

Only one opinion matters and if he wants him I’d back his judgement.

    Have it your own way.

Race to the bottom right enough.

Carry on with your silk purse out of a pigs ear fantasy.

But….just remember what Jock Stein said about Celtic jerseys and inferior players.

    Total farce.

    HH

  20. Scott Allen?

Not for me but if the manager rates him then I’ll support him like anyone else. Who does he replace given that he plays in the number 10 role currently occupied by Johansen (player of the year last season) and Kris Commons (our best goal threat outwith the out and out strikers for the last 4 seasons)?

Ronny must have a plan for him I suppose if the reports are true. Still think a left back and striker are bigger priorities but if we are going to sign a new creative midfielder I would hope we can do better than Scott Allen.

P.S would love to be proved wrong and for the lad to sign and be a star for us, just can’t see it though

  21. Am starting to wonder if I’m on a Celtic site at all.

Our assistant manager and one of the best players to play for us in recent times – a forthright guy who states his opinions without any intention of having a go at anyone and gets slaughtered for it by a hostile press.

I summary John Collins stated that we come up against better, smarter players in the CL and we need to set our team up accordingly.

Do you disagree with that ?

Can you give any instance where he has shown himself to be conceited?

Can you give any evidence to your belief that he is an idiot

  23. Scott Allan is a decent player. He can pick a pass and has decent balance.

He’s not as good (right now) as Brown, Biton, Mulgrew or Armstrong IMO. It’s a signing i wouldn’t be inclined to make but if he comes I am hopeful Ronny can improve him.

  24. The Clumpany

Your ‘Wiping the Slate Clean” piece reminded me of this, from Collins and Lapierre’s excellent biography of the legendary bullfighter Manuel Benitez, better known as ‘El Cordobes’.

“Manolo’s fee for those early ‘corridas’ was 20,000 pesetas, but he saw little of it. Most of it went to his manager to pay their expenses and to fuel his publicity campaign. With some of the first pesetas he managed to wrest from his manager, he invested in a strange talisman. It was a ham, an enormous mountain ham such as the hovel in the Calle Belen had never seen. That ham became his constant companion, his pride, a kind of reassuring presence to remind him that the world in which he was now moving was not a dream.

“I walked into the hotels with my ham,” he could later recall. “I hung it up in the window, and every time I was hungry I cut off a slice. It made me feel good just to look at it. It was wonderful to think I was rich enough to buy myself a whole ham and to cut off a slice whenever I was hungry, night or day. There are people who like to travel with a friend. Me, in those days, I only wanted to travel with my ham. It was more than a friend for me, it was something that took away your hunger, that you could eat little by little.

And, when it was all finished, and there was nothing left but the bone, well, I bought another one, and to me it was still the same ham.”

    Manolo’s Ham FC.

  25. On the subject of Collins let’s be brutally honest, if The Cardigan or The Gardener had made the same remarks not one single Scottish journalist would have had anything to say about it (I mean even McInnes got the benefit of the doubt saying pretty much the same thing a couple of weeks earlier).

The problem is not John Collins, the problem is the Scottish media. Guys like The Clumpany do tremendous work in calling them out for what they are. Laugh at them, ridicule them, embarrass them (if possible).

  26. Ronny stated that in future he would give more prominence to signing Scottish-based players.

He has backed this up with the likes of, GMS, Armstrong and Cifti.

I don’t know if the Allan story is true, however if it is, it should be no surprise.

If Dylan goes, he has had his chance to be evaluated, and has not made it – it would make sense to swap one for one (plus any adjustment) – Stokes transfer money will more than make up the difference, if indeed it is needed.

So the upshot – two unwanted players out and off the wage-bill and a new one in – not the worse thing that has happened.

Slightly disappointed if Henderson goes out on loan – however prepared to trust Ronny’s judgement on this.

Ronny has also said that he will work with a smaller, more compact squad – so again no surprises.

The logistics of signing the Brugge defender as interesting – of course if VVD goes after we go out and we sign Mechele, there’s no problem – but what if we go through – VVD goes, and Michele plays against Man Utd? We could then be left with no replacement in the CL…intriguing!!!!!

  27. Celtic lost because we gaver Killie hope by missing sitters. I always scream that we don’t shoot enough.. need to change that to shoot on target..away from keeper! ^ attempts to beat keeper from 6 yards all failed. All should have scored.Rogic,KC, Griff, Johansson, Forrest, Rogic again!

  28. I’m not letting this go….How can anybody possibly say that Scott Allen has “Class”, and ” Talent”, where is he playing at the moment?

I refuse to let people whoever they are, and whatever their agenda, to get away with massaging the reality.

Lets look at it realistically….wha tare the chances of Scott Allen being in the Celtic team, and in the CL.

    Listen…wake up…..its not happening.

You are fooling nobody with this nonsense….the fact is, if he was that good, he would not be playing for Hibs, or Sevco.

So please desist with this something for nothing stupidity.

    Its pseudo bs

    HH

  29. Charliemac.

Exactly. All John Collins did was tell the truth. McInnes himself said a similar thing before Aberdeen played the Croatian team.

As ever MSM took J.C.s comments out of context and created a storm in a teacup.

What amazes me is that supporters still fall for it.

It’s a bit like the people on here who engage with rudicantfail and then are annoyed with him when he starts his trolling.
