Alert on the left, the gravy in Ronny’s pie

761

I’m largely ignoring the defensive lapses of last night. There will be at least two changes for the Champions League, and everyone will be far more attentive. It was, though, a concern that both Kilmarnock goals came as a result of Celtic’s left-hand-side being breached.

Malmo’s Age Hareide will have noted this, and whatever attacking resources he deploys next week are likely to try to exploit a perceived weakness. Ronny will have a choice: Izzie or Charlie? My money’s on the latter.

Tom Rogic didn’t have the perfect game but it was good to see him take so much responsibility. He’s looked like the office junior of the Celtic midfield on previous outings, as did Nir Bitton for most of his early games. If Rogic has genuine talent, we need to let him find his feet in games like these.

Ronny Deila answered all questions after the game but gave little away. I hope his dismissal of injury worries was accurate. Kris Commons is the gravy in his pie. We are capable of beating anyone without Kris, but we need him doing his thing if we are to take a comfortable victory to Sweden.

Yesterday I was looking over Celtic’s form in November 2006 after doing an interview for a French magazine, who are writing a piece on Shunsuke Nakamura. That was the month Naka scored the goal which sent us top of the group and into the knock-out rounds of the Champions League for the first time – with a game to spare, no less.

It’s less well remembered that earlier that month we went out of the League Cup after losing at home to Falkirk on penalties, or that we couldn’t win at Easter Road immediately after the Champions League win.

Indifferent performances and results surround some of our greatest European performances. Getting it right when it counts is what matters.

  1. @The Green Man

Scott Allan has done it in the SPFL before. It’s not that he’s some Championship nobody.

I’m not convinced that its a signing we need to make myself. But I find your argument to be overly simplistic and your tone confrontational.

  2. playfusbal4dguilders on

Cards on the table, again. I’m not a fan of our manager. I dislike the style of football we play under him.

I can’t imagine the restrictions he has to work under, I can’t imagine the choices he makes in selection and player purchases, I do see how it turns out over 90minutes and the way his team play gives me a ‘glass half empty’ feeling.

Bearing selection and player purchases in mind, i think he was fully responsible for our CL exit last year. Considering that, it gives me little optimism for the Malmo ties.

Maybe I’m just getting old and hanker back, to a time, as I see it of better football, centre forwards in the box, crosses coming in etc.

Anyway I truly hope he proves me wrong, its too big not to get it right.

If the manager doesn’t take us through to group stages, would you give him a third go at it?

  3. Afternoon Timland from a hot hun free mountain valley.

Scott Allen wouldn’t be a priority if I were the coach, thankfully I’m not, but with better players around him, who knows.

And come what may, to see the meja squirming and doing an about turn on him would be a joy, and to girut hun monkey scum would be worth the fee alone.

Right Pedro, get a proper striker and a couple of quality defenders……..Please

  4. Mr Pastry

If Michele play for Brugges against Man U, and Man U win and qualify then he will be eligible to play in CL for us if we qualify. As long as Brugges are not in the same competition as us he can play for us if we sign him.

  5. Too many posters on here agreeing with each other,…its not acceptable.

If you all want to agree with each other like sheep….go to Rainjurz meeja.

This is not the CQN I know.

Get Sevco and Scott Allen to feck….to their home in ipox.

C,mon the hoops…..they are hurting badly.

  6. Greenpinata,

I agree that lots of people are reading too much into a 2-2 draw but I think folk are just frustrated because thru know (myself included) that we could and should have been out of sight well before Killies two equalisers. We also know we can defend so much better and against much better opposition as well.

Last night was similar in a way to the barca game on Tuesday. They started very well first 30, it was almost too easy, then complacency kicks in a wee bit and you get punished.

For the record I still have the gut feeling that we will beat Malmo over two legs and all will be rosy (and I don’t like to boast but my gut has served me well in the past haha!)

  7. See Graham Spiers asking in a Herald headline “Are Celtic at it over Allan”

Now I don’t take the Herald, or subscribe to their website, so I don’t know what is said in the full article.

Peter Lawwell would not indulge in petty games like this.

Hibs are up against it and risk losing Allan for nothing – to replace an unsettled player with a couple of new ones, right at the start of the season, MUST be of interest to them.

If Allan goes in a straight money only deal, it will be staggered over the length of a four-year (probably) contract – so maybe no more than £80k per year on a drip feed.

  8. Here’s an idea….

Fed up hearing get a proper striker.

    Somebody…

    Anybody…..

    Name a name

Tell us how much he will cost

Tell us how much he will want to be paid

Assure us that he is desperate to pay in Scotland

Assure us that his wife/girlfriend can’t wait to sample the high spots of Glasgow

  9. The Green Man on 13th August 2015 1:25 pm,

So by ranting and raving, you want all the people on here who think Allan has talent to change their minds, because you disagree in a mouth frothing way,

    Aye,right ye are.

  10. The Green Man

I think you should read back to when Craig Gordon was signing for us. It’s all about opinions. I have seen the boy Allan more than a few times. My wife is a Hibee. He is a very good player playing in an average Hibs team in a lower league. Hearts won that league and are now top of our league. Hearts even rested their top scorer who looks a player and another couple of first team players and still managed to beat Motherwell very comfortably 2-0.

Please stop with the PL down sizing nonsense. If he was down sizing since the day he came in we would be playing in the West of Scotland amatuer league.

We are all Celtic supporters and want the best for the club.

We all have different opinions that is what makes a blog great.

As for the boy playing for Hibs he must be rubbish, really? Dundee United had the foresight to sign a boy from Queens Park who went on to be an international and get sold for millions within a year.

The guy has not signed for us and may never sign for us but we can all talk about it in a civilised manner without throwing our toys out the pram.

Thanks for this answer – now the wiser!!!!

  12. Is the time right to drop Joe Hansen.?

Before anyone answers that, I know the likelihood is that he won’t get dropped.

However I am one of a long line of fans who witness that he hasn’t kicked his own bahooky, since well, since even before he was awarded player of the year.

    The guys form is atrocious.

No one man is bigger than the team…. Get his erase booted Ronny.

For me, I would go with Forrest (on last nights evidence), Commons in the No.10 role, and either GMS or Armstrong on the left, dependant on fitness and availability.

And that above is my suggestion not for ICT, but for vs. Malmo.

  13. Charliemac,

Will all due respect, the questions you are asking are not ours to answer. There are employees on the clubs payroll however whose job it is to answer these questions and to deliver a striker who can have the same impact as say a Gary Hooper.

The last few years they have tried but failed, hopefully they’re due to unearth a gem (we can but dream!)

  14. TURKEYBHOY& LIVIBHOY

Absolute BS from the pair of you.

You would be quite happy to see Celtic sign SPL dross

And what the hell do you know about football that I don’t?

I refuse to accept that Scott Allen is a good player…sue me:)

As for me ranting and raving….its called having an opinion, if that’s ok with you.

Celtic lost because we gaver Killie hope by missing sitters. I always scream that we don’t shoot enough.. need to change that to shoot on target..away from keeper! ^ attempts to beat keeper from 6 yards all failed. All should have scored.Rogic,KC, Griff, Johansson, Forrest, Rogic again!

    ========================================================================================

    Agree 100%

As I said in a previous post – ‘tippy-tappy/pass the parcel/after you Claude was the format again at Kilmarnock – it’s so obvious by striking a shot earlier from slightly further out, you open up the angles and avoid bodies and the goalkeeper blocking from close-range – I was screaming “SHOOT” all through the first half last night and also in the Ross Co first-half.

    I’m just over-posting today

Bored to tears in the office today – too much time on my hands

  17. The Green Man

Why all the excitement? You disagree. That is fine. Not everyone agrees.

No transfer is a guaranteed success. You either trust the manager or you don’t. If the manager wants him then you back him.

Who would you prefer we signed?

  18. The referee was a disgrace last night, as he failed to apply the laws of the game in clear-cut circumstances. A trip on an opponent running towards goal, with no attempt to play the ball, is a clear yellow card, as is a pull-back in the same circumstances. Any repeat by the same offender risks a red, so most moderate their tackles. No card, another free shot at the likes of Jamesie, which Kilmarnock happily took advantage of.

The MIB didn’t cost us the 2 dropped points, but he certainly made it harder for us to get all 3 by his failure to do his job.

  19. RUGGYGMAN on 13TH AUGUST 2015 1:42 PM

Is the time right to drop Joe Hansen.?

    ====================================================

I like Stefan – however his form started to dip from the ICT semi-final last season, where he missed two very good opportunities in the first-half – he has not got back to the form he showed for the bulk of last season.

I am not sure that dropping him is the answer – wait and see!!!

  20. And from Management level down, they all need a right good shake.

Quarabag away was a great hard working performance.

But the whole train of thought at the club, that everything is just simply too easy in Scotland, needs to be battered the Fck right out of them.

The key to success, in any walk of life, stems from hard work.

So if the pre-madona’s think they can just swan about at rugby park of a Wednesday night, they better get their mentality changed asap.

  21. West End of East End on

The Green Man – That’s your typical response to anyone who disagrees with you. From now on we’ll on just agree with your opinion even though guys like LB etc have seen him in the flesh and disagree with you…

I don’t know much about Scott Allan apart from being voted POTY in his division last year, sounds like a decent player that’s maybe not had the breaks to make it, no idea, but your foaming at the mouth ranting must mean your opinion is the one that counts….got it now…

  22. LIVIBHOY

I trust the manager, its PL I don’t trust.

I can only offer my opinion, that its a backward step, to buy from the Championship, and if you expect players at that level to become CL players, then you know nothing about football.

Scott Allen is playing with Hibs in the Championship for a good reason….i.e…he is not good enough to play at a better level, or somebody would have signed him by now.

I wouldn’t say that playing well in the 1st Division is the same as playing in the CL….would you?

  23. Reading through the pros and cons of signing Scott Allan and mention being made of what Jock Stein said about the jersey not shrinking to fit inferior players. It struck me how many of his European Winning 11 would have been considered inferior by the bulk of the support a mere 2 seasons before. The bulk were also ran then. If our manager thinks he sees something in Allan which will improve our team, he has my support. As Jock himself said, Celtic wasn’t his first love but it was his last. He hasn’t been alone in that by a long chalk.

By the way, I still think John Collins was right to say what he said. The sooner we get out of Scotland the better all round.

  24. Here’s the thing about Jo Hansen

Sky TV and the English Epl are big on Opta stats.

Well by crikey , Jo Hansens Opta stats would make for deplorable reading!

  25. Seems Nir was feeling it last night and that was the reason he was substituted ,

Sooooooooooo apologies to Ronny for slating him for it last night :(((.

Just back from Ticket Office , as the tickets went on sale the queue was right round to the Dalmarnock road , Boooooom 8 windows dealing with sales in and out in no time,

  29. And for the sensitive bhoys out there…. The Ambrose lovers…

    Seriously, wakey wakey.

Get with reality. Guy should never wear our proud jersey again.

I mean, if you and I haven’t been granted the opportunity to wear the hoops in an official capacity, then why on earth should he be allowed.

Fraud of a football player. Complete joke.

And let’s not feel sorry for him. He’s been on 4 or 5k per week for over three years now. My heart bleeds.

  30. EMERALDBEE

Pretty sure. Changed the rules a few years ago so you could play for a club in group stages even if you played for someone else in qualifying rounds

  31. The Green Man

I think our management team have learned. Is it better to sign foreign players you know little about? It has been proven that in the main that does not work.

You go on about him being a Championship player. The guy knocked back Prem clubs to sign for Hibs to play. He has played in the Championship in England. Is that better than the Scottish Championship? I would say so.

You say you do not trust PL? What has that got to do with the gaffer possibly identifying a potential signing?

The guy was PoTY and Hearts romped the league. The hearts team are now top of our league and look a very good outfit.

I am not saying the guy is a world beater he is not. He is a very good player though. He has good vision and can play a lovely through ball. He played more matches last season than at any point in his career previously. Towards the end of the season he was jaded. If you look at his performances early on he looked a class act.

Ronny may see something, lets not forget that Hibs approached us though. This may go nowhere.

Good point on the CL quality of player though. I said this morning that Ronny is gambling on CL by keeping the bulk of his budget in the war chest (can we use that phrase?) until we qualify. That is a risky game but Ronny is taking the right track in my view. Keep it all. Get in the CL and the quality of player you can attract on permanent and loan deals will be better. Scott Allan would be a worthy addition to the squad. Once you join a club like Celtic the sky is the limit. I remember standing at brockville once when a wee bhoy came on the pitch and played full back signed from Dunfermline that afternoon. I wasn;t sure he would make it. Dunfermline weren;t a great side I hadn;t rated him before hand. In years to come Jackie McNamara would skipper Celtic and win many trophies and Scotland caps.

If you have the ability drive and tenacity you can make it at any level.

IF he comes he will be viewed as a squad player and it would be up to him to get into the team. Leigh Griffiths has shown that with hard work you can make an impact. As for the European squad I think you need X amount of home grown players so with a number of youngsters on loan and more to follow and maybe some European names earmarked for the first team squad maybe Ronny has identified Allan as a player who can beef up the squad but also play first team games at a very decent level.

Commons went off last night. Who could play a defence splitting pass that was left? I believe Allan can. I have seen him do it. We need players to come in to play diddy games like last night and I have said for a long time I believe this lad has something. If I am right we are all happy if I am wrong you can throw it in my face next time we debate something.
