Alert on the left, the gravy in Ronny’s pie

761

I’m largely ignoring the defensive lapses of last night. There will be at least two changes for the Champions League, and everyone will be far more attentive. It was, though, a concern that both Kilmarnock goals came as a result of Celtic’s left-hand-side being breached.

Malmo’s Age Hareide will have noted this, and whatever attacking resources he deploys next week are likely to try to exploit a perceived weakness. Ronny will have a choice: Izzie or Charlie? My money’s on the latter.

Tom Rogic didn’t have the perfect game but it was good to see him take so much responsibility. He’s looked like the office junior of the Celtic midfield on previous outings, as did Nir Bitton for most of his early games. If Rogic has genuine talent, we need to let him find his feet in games like these.

Ronny Deila answered all questions after the game but gave little away. I hope his dismissal of injury worries was accurate. Kris Commons is the gravy in his pie. We are capable of beating anyone without Kris, but we need him doing his thing if we are to take a comfortable victory to Sweden.

Yesterday I was looking over Celtic’s form in November 2006 after doing an interview for a French magazine, who are writing a piece on Shunsuke Nakamura. That was the month Naka scored the goal which sent us top of the group and into the knock-out rounds of the Champions League for the first time – with a game to spare, no less.

It’s less well remembered that earlier that month we went out of the League Cup after losing at home to Falkirk on penalties, or that we couldn’t win at Easter Road immediately after the Champions League win.

Indifferent performances and results surround some of our greatest European performances. Getting it right when it counts is what matters.

  4. It would appear there is a ‘head of steam’ building-up against Jose Mourinho, in the ‘doctor’ row,

UEFA say that that a) If the referee signals that a player needs treatment, then the medical staff must respond. b) a doctor can enter the field even if not beckoned by the referee, if he/she believes there is an urgent medical need. c) club doctors’ responsibility is to the players under their charge and not to the club management.

Supposing any club manager restricted a doctor and a player died, unimaginable maybe, but it could happen if Jose wins this one.

My best guess is that this incident may lead to some kind of initiative whereby the referee will be the sole arbiter of whether a player needs treatment, over the wishes of team officials – but would they (referees) want this – it could leave them open to legal action.

This incident may appear to be an internal Chelsea matter, but it could have far-reaching repercussions.

The cynic in me thinks old Jose is starting the process to work his ticket. 2-3 years max is his normal shelf life at a club before he falls out with everyone and moves on. With Pep probably leaving Bayern next summer maybe he’s getting itchy feet.

  7. The Green Man

IMO Scott Allan isn’t rubbish but I do believe Henderson and McGeouch are better and I’d rather see them getting a chance before him.

  8. I’d give them McGeough, Henderson and McGregor to be honest.

I only really rate Henderson and would like him to stay. However, doesn’t look like Ronny will play him so Hibs would be a good place to learn his trade.

Didn’t harm the lads at Hearts.

  9. I have never seen Scott Allan play so I have no idea what kind of player he is or whether he is any good. On balance, he would be a long shot gamble to impact the first team. However, I am sure that good or otherwise, he or anyone else will have at best only a limited impact on the goal scoring of the team. Why? There seems to be a long established culture within the team of passing the ball sideways. This is something Ronny has inherited… NL’s teams did it in spades(he built his career on playing this way!); GS’s teams did it; MON’s teams ended up doing it. The CH’s pass across to each other; the midfielders pass sideways to the overlapping full backs or to wingers. Most passes from the midfield go sideways to the wings where three defenders usually block forward progress. The result is the full back/winger pushing the ball backwards to another full back/winger because they have no options to go forward. The reason for this malaise is clear…lack of movement off the ball, particularly in forward areas. It is not the lack of quality in the players that we have. A good example of the effect of this problem is when Tierney was played. He wanted to move forward or to move the ball forward but he had little to no options in the forward areas. Result: he crossed the ball into the one striker who may or may not be in the box. By the end of his time on the park, he was making the safe passes sideways. Heck, the experienced players were all doing it!

Buying a new LB, new affordable striker or Scott Allan is not going to fix this problem. The solution is already at Celtic and that is more effective coaching on movement off the ball.

Tell me, if Griffiths( or Cifcti) or Hansen do not score where will the required 2 or 3 goals per game come from? Celtic, fix the lack of movement off the ball, or change the system, else underachievement is on the cards.

    All IMHO, of course!

Apparently Jose has wanted rid of her since he got there. It’s the only logic I can see in him doing this.

  11. Rebus-agree, we lack midfielders who can make a forward pass,1 up front marked by 3 defenders doesn’t help IMO.HH

I don’t see any possibility of a referee being or wanting to be appointed as sole arbiter of a medical condition. They are not qualified to do so (apart from maybe a very small percentage) and would not be insurable to make such a decision.

The existing rules seem fine to me . Whether Jose likes it or not, the decision to interfere must be left with the doctor.

  14. Setting Free The Bears @ 9:34

Well written comments. Can’t dispute many of them. However, one does not have to be a grumpy old man to wonder what would have happened if Griffiths had injured himself a la Commons.

With Cifti suspended, would we be relying on Stokes or Sepcovic for league games?

It is true that Ronny and John Collins see the team every day, so why do the same failings persist?

as Mr. pastry alluded to earlier, why is the team not instructed to shoot on sight. If they are instructed to do so, why don’t they.

I lose count of the number of times we have a shooting opportunity, hesitate, and the chance is lost. Apart from Commons, and possibly Griffiths, no player seems to have the instinct to do this, and we persist in trying to walk the ball through packed defenses.

No matter how good or crap Scott Allan is at finding a pass we need a better striker to score the goals from these great passes.

I personally don’t think Scott Allen is good enough, but what do I know.

If Ronny thinks he can develop him, fair enough, but I am in the same boat as you re Pedro.

I think the coaching staff will have been given a budget, and they need to find what they hope to be good enough in the future within that budget, cos they can’t find the finished artical within the budget.

Still on the hoping to unearth a gem policy imo, with a disregard to the present.

I will keep saying it, there are players out there, players who would jump at the chance of joining us, players at the end of their careers, but who would solidify us.

    Just ask yourself this………

  18. Rebus 67,

I don’t think our manager wants to play the square passing game but it is certainly what he inheritted. It is ingrained in some of them but what doesn’t seem to be ingrained in enough of them is what you say: lack of movement off the ball. It was obvious last night. Way too often when our player passes the ball, they either stop and follow the game or simply stop and look in another direction altogether. (I think Mulgrew is particularly guilty of this.) Few have the ability to pass and move for the return. Of course, few have the ability to pass in order that the receiving player can make a return pass. Bitton does it in his sleep. It should be second nature to them all. Practice, practice and practice again.

Having said all that, even when our players are in a position to pass it, the referees up here allow the opposition to check our movement, usually by foul means, unhindered, as was the case regularly last night too.

  19. Me thinks that this is a fight too far for Jose.

I do think that he will win the battle, but eventually lose the war. He may be the planets best coach / translater, but a fight with an extremely popular doc with medical opinion on her side is a fight too far, even for Jose.

    How’s things ticking.

Just about recovered from India, Indonesia and other exotic places and now getting ready for Panama, Nicaragua all points up the Rockies through to Canada and Alaska.

Anyway, on a stroll around Glasgow’s world famous Trongate this morning I was heartened to find that the inevitable had finally been accepted……It had to happen I suppose but sometimes only the sight of final and conclusive evidence will do.

It is fair to say that capitulation is not only complete, but the Teddy Bears themselves have succumbed and acknowledged that their once-upon-a-time team is no more, passed on, defunct, liquidated and liquidised.

I think we should now recognise their cry of “We surrender” in a magnanimous fashion and welcome them into the enlightenment and their John-Paulian conversion. Truly a moment to savour, as pictures of Lizzie are replaced by a new mascot and totem in gatherings throughout the land of one of their own eponymous diehards resplendent in a reborn acceptance of reality.

    3 things

    1) Jose lost it already by banning the Doctor and appealing keeper being sent off

    2) Last night irrelevant – only 4 or 5 who played will play in CL

    3) Henderson McGeough for Allen – maybe big Peter doesn’t want the Huns back after all !!!!!

  24. One thing that struck me last night was the need to develop and keep developing the next ‘fulcrum’ and heartbeat of the team/ squad. Scott Brown was not that player until a few years ago. Now he is often the difference between a scrappy win and dropping points.

Players develop in to that. Given time. If I and others had my way at times Broonie would never have got there. A bit more patience may well be the thing.

Oh and this time last year I was slating Nir Bitton! (Or was it Nir Biton)

So I’ve learned to reserve judgement on players.

I am just hoping Jo Inge Berget doesn’t read my contributions to CQN – I have given him all the motivation he needs for the rest of his career. Sorry about that Jo – really enjoyed your brace against DUFC. And that injury you were carrying…….. I get it now, I really do. You’re destined for greatness young man. Hopefully the Europa League group stages will give you that platform…….. (That should do it….)

  25. 67 European Cup Winners,

No offence intended, but are you a female by any chance.

  26. Exiled Tim,

I agree completely. There are good affordable strikers out there who are 28+ who would be highly motivated to play for Celtic at this stage of their career. One such is the Hungarian, Daniel Bode. The same applies to LB’s For some positions we only need to create a bit of time to allow home grown players develop. Bringing in a low cost, effective player for 2-3 years would add experience whilst allowing the kids to develop.

  27. I saw this recently released letter for ICOH – the International Commission on Occupational Health by its President, Dr. Jukka Takala on 23rd July. It is

    To whom it may concern

Subject: ICOH Statement on Qatar 2022 World Cup and migrant workers

The International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) notes with alarm and serious concern the tragic loss of life, and work-related diseases and injuries, reported among workers at construction venues

and living quarters, particularly in terms of the 2022 FIFA World Cup events in Qatar. ICOH calls upon the state authorities in Qatar to take immediate action to investigate this situation, with direction and support

from occupational health and safety professionals, and to take all the necessary actions to create an evidence base and to prevent additional deaths, disease, and injury.

    July 23rd, 2015

    Dr. Jukka Takala

    President, ICOH

I work in international occupational health helping multinational companies apply proper medical standards to staff to ensure that they are fit for duty and that their workplace is not damaging their health. Normally (not always) , construction/infrastructure projects for major world events are managed under reasonable health and safety processes but it is shocking that, after all the publicity last year about Qatar, that the ICOH has still felt it necessary to issue such a statement.

  28. Parkhead,

I believe Jock Stein had a system in training whereby each player was allowed two consecutive touches of the ball. Trap it, pass it! If the player took more than two touches, the ball was surrendered to the other team. When I coached, I used this in training. Very quickly players learn to move to help out their teammates.

Seems simple enough, does it not?

I had the occasion to sit in the Lisbon Lion upper stand some years ago and , other than Naka, was amazed how little movement was made by players to take up a space where a pass could be received.
