Alert on the left, the gravy in Ronny’s pie

761

I’m largely ignoring the defensive lapses of last night. There will be at least two changes for the Champions League, and everyone will be far more attentive. It was, though, a concern that both Kilmarnock goals came as a result of Celtic’s left-hand-side being breached.

Malmo’s Age Hareide will have noted this, and whatever attacking resources he deploys next week are likely to try to exploit a perceived weakness. Ronny will have a choice: Izzie or Charlie? My money’s on the latter.

Tom Rogic didn’t have the perfect game but it was good to see him take so much responsibility. He’s looked like the office junior of the Celtic midfield on previous outings, as did Nir Bitton for most of his early games. If Rogic has genuine talent, we need to let him find his feet in games like these.

Ronny Deila answered all questions after the game but gave little away. I hope his dismissal of injury worries was accurate. Kris Commons is the gravy in his pie. We are capable of beating anyone without Kris, but we need him doing his thing if we are to take a comfortable victory to Sweden.

Yesterday I was looking over Celtic’s form in November 2006 after doing an interview for a French magazine, who are writing a piece on Shunsuke Nakamura. That was the month Naka scored the goal which sent us top of the group and into the knock-out rounds of the Champions League for the first time – with a game to spare, no less.

It’s less well remembered that earlier that month we went out of the League Cup after losing at home to Falkirk on penalties, or that we couldn’t win at Easter Road immediately after the Champions League win.

Indifferent performances and results surround some of our greatest European performances. Getting it right when it counts is what matters.

Scott Allan will not improve CFC

A left back that can defend , a decent striker and a proper back up CB would

  2. Really disappointed with last night’s result, should have converted more of our chances but our LB position has been a problem defensively for some time. Izzy or Charlie -not a great choice.

on jose – maybe he shouldn’t encourage his players to go down and stay down.

on scott allan – we will buy him then give him to sevco on loan to make sure they come up – it’s all part of PLs plan don’t you know

I have never seen such a series of angry ad hominem posts on here since …. er .. the last time.

Anyway, I reckon you’re a hun who is raging at the possibility of losing your prime target to get you “back where you belong.” Too many of your remarks were hunnish.

Go on, I dare you. Spell it out. You are a hurting hun, aren’t you.

Well I’m guessing Kris Commons did not recover from his eighty eight minutes of exertion at the weekend, hence a muscular injury last night. Hopefully it will not stop him being available on Saturday or next Wednesday. Mention of the League Cup defeat by Falkirk back in 2006 triggered a couple of memories, one that one Anthony Stokes was playing for the Bairns, and scored and missed a penalty, and two the weather that night was similar to to some that some of us are experiencing today, (but not WITS and his bourgeoise lifestyle in Dublin). No need to water the pitch that night.

Had a good craic with some Ayrshire Tims lady night watching the game

We were bemoaning the obsession with value players and sell on value …against the situation of bringing in players to immediately improve the team for a season or two

  7. There was player that was destined to leave Hibs for his boyhood heroic club that played at Ibrox.

He was a certainty to do so and people like Derek Johnstone made it 110% certainty.

They were still 110%certain even on the day that the player signed for Celtic !

And it seemed to have worked out quite well.

I think his name was Brown.

What are the odds on Hibs winning the second tier league this season?

    ==========================

In all honesty I think the Ibrox tenants will win the title with a bit in hand – Hibs I guess will come up in play-offs, hopefully against the club with no supporters ie. Hamilton.

Don’t want St Mirren – endured their place three times pre-season – great big pitch – junior-type stadium.

  10. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

I don’t know much about Allan, but does anyone know if he has anything in his game that would suggest that he could be groomed as an eventual replacement for Kris Commons?

    PS.

The only time i watched him was in Hibs’ dismal showing in the playoffs against the team that Motherwell beat and he was, shall we say, off the pace.

  11. I agree that Allan isn’t what we need. But from what we hear, he isn’t going to prevent us from signing a LB, CB or Striker.

We are exchanging players Ronny doesn’t play.

I don’t really mind as long as we get a Striker and a VVD replacement. I’m hoping the Brugge rumours are true.

  12. Scott Allen, don’t care who he supports as long as he can do a job for us. The question that should be asked is’ does he have the ability we require’? In my opinion the answer is no. We would be swapping one squad player for another with little or no improvement to the quality of the 1st team squad. Why aren’t we looking for a proven goal scoring striker *A PRIORITY *. Agree with other posters LG does not have the ability or guile to fill that role for us against decent opposition. Maybe OK for the SPFL but against European teams? As for Nadir Çiftçi I am hoping that there is the making of a decent forward there but having watched him at DU and the few games he has played for us thus far I just can’t see it.

I go and watch the local team here, they would be about Div 246, but their training methods come straight from the Barca camp, two touches max, one to control the ball, one to pass it, they are all allocated a 6 foot circle as their zone, they can’t leave it, others try to get the ball from them, the essence is speed and control, it’s a joy to watch.

I have come to the conclusion that too many posters know very little about the modern game. I do not mean they simply offer opinions which differ from my own. I mean just what I said.

Interestingly ( or perhaps not), the more simplistic and baseless the opinion, the more vehemently is it given!

  20. I hope we do not try and sign Allan and that its just a Tim winding up the Meeja, because they are a gullible lot. I don’t rate Allan and he would be less than a squad player for us. I agree with most regarding a striker and maybe a LB, my preference would be a striker that knows how to take and convert an opporchancity.

Cant believe there aren’t any hacks out there having a go at JC today, just goes to show you that it was a bunch of trumped up drivel

i disagree, Efe was to blame, utterly ridiculous to let a striker who was 2 yards behind you get in from of you to score just because you cant be bothered going for the ball, even worse the fact you are that close to your own goal

i appreciate he’s a Marmite player on here, but he’s just not for me

  24. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

I read somewhere recently that Ronny was keen to sign Scott Allan but others were advising caution. I’m firml in the ‘I hope we sign Scott Allan’ camp because I’m a vindictive sod and we’ll remember their signing of Judas. Revenge is a dish best served cold and this would be as cold as it gets. They’ve ran a dirty ops campaign over this boy for the last month. They’ve used the Hun Lovin’ Criminals in the smsm to unsettle the player and to undermine his club. The hacks have shot their bolt telling everybody that he’s a great talent and would guarantee Sevco world dominance ( :-)) ).

If we sign him just let’s sit back and enjoy the fun.

  25. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked on

    Rebus67

You are probably correct but I started reading it because I felt it was trying to balance the bias of the MSSM. Without inside information, that is not always possible but thoughtful posts from some posters certainly help counteract the dreadful Scottish Media. I made my original point because I feel the all too predictable and simplistic comments to which I referred are not too far removed from the modus operandi of that same media.

You are, however, probably correct that CQN is about opinions and if you knew me , you would know my opinion on opinions!!

  26. Go tell the Spartim on

I think we’re wishing for a signing thats gonna “wow” us, or at least get excited to see him play. As the bold RD said himself it may take another transfer window for us to get an accurate view.

We’re still trying to manage a lot of the squad inherited by him, although i am encouraged by his summer signings, Ciftci apart.

Reducing the size of the squad was one of his ambitions, so getting rid of 2 for 1 (he may have something a bit different to others in the squad) might make a bit of sense.

However, as someone pointed out this morning, if we are going to sell VVD anyway, why dont we invest a good chunk of that to get us into the Champions League rather than putting the cart before the horse. Even given our moneyball approach it still seems like we’re handicapping ourselves before we start.

  27. Jungle,

I started reading CQN for the same reasons. IMHO the nature of the Blog has changed over the years, not just in format. Initially, it was more fact based with more financial analysis and, perhaps, more leaks on behind the scene happenings. Remember the Belamy saga? I suspect that there are many more readers and posters now.

Whilst I do not enjoy it as much as I did, I still scan it most days.

Off on a short holiday now. Bye.
