Alert on the left, the gravy in Ronny’s pie

761

I’m largely ignoring the defensive lapses of last night. There will be at least two changes for the Champions League, and everyone will be far more attentive. It was, though, a concern that both Kilmarnock goals came as a result of Celtic’s left-hand-side being breached.

Malmo’s Age Hareide will have noted this, and whatever attacking resources he deploys next week are likely to try to exploit a perceived weakness. Ronny will have a choice: Izzie or Charlie? My money’s on the latter.

Tom Rogic didn’t have the perfect game but it was good to see him take so much responsibility. He’s looked like the office junior of the Celtic midfield on previous outings, as did Nir Bitton for most of his early games. If Rogic has genuine talent, we need to let him find his feet in games like these.

Ronny Deila answered all questions after the game but gave little away. I hope his dismissal of injury worries was accurate. Kris Commons is the gravy in his pie. We are capable of beating anyone without Kris, but we need him doing his thing if we are to take a comfortable victory to Sweden.

Yesterday I was looking over Celtic’s form in November 2006 after doing an interview for a French magazine, who are writing a piece on Shunsuke Nakamura. That was the month Naka scored the goal which sent us top of the group and into the knock-out rounds of the Champions League for the first time – with a game to spare, no less.

It’s less well remembered that earlier that month we went out of the League Cup after losing at home to Falkirk on penalties, or that we couldn’t win at Easter Road immediately after the Champions League win.

Indifferent performances and results surround some of our greatest European performances. Getting it right when it counts is what matters.

  1. I see the Scot Allen poll is fairly close,

I watched him against Dumbarton at the weekend,

he can certainly pick a pass and is a very confident player,

but he didn’t like the physical side and seemed on a short fuse a couple of times

  2. traditionalist88 on

Have only seen Allan play for Hibs a handful of times but strikes me as a good passer capable of the killer ball and puts some great balls into the box from deep/wide positions. Not sure his influence on games is massive but that can come with age. May be well worth a gamble but a bit baffling Henderson may be allowed out on loan again… fitness issues?

Have heard Allan is a massive hun so he may have a big decision on his hands. Heard all the same stuff about Brown right enough…

Grew up there and parents still in Balornock although I am now on other side of the city . You would be an All Saints boy whereas I was Albert.

  4. I really don’t see the point in buying this laddie from Hibs.

We have a superb midfield and surely signing the lad would further stifle the growth of Liam Henderson & Rogic.

Only plus I can see it it would severely hack off those Sevconian chaps!!

    Sign him up then!!

    Now that is good news,

  6. On last night’s performance if highlighted is that we need to strengthen the LB and CH. you could argue we could do with another Striker, yes Leigh scored and has done eleven times in as many SPL games but we could have done with changing it last night as his touch was not in after the second minute.

Efe can do a job but he needs to work on his lapses in concentration or at least remember do not let anybody get in front of you, first to the ball.

I feel for Izzy, great game last week but last night showed his limitations in defending. That was Kilmarnock, how will he fair against better opposition! It worries me that we have known for some time we need a LB, why can’t we sign one, again the worry is, like the signing of a CH and Striker, is dependent on UCL qualification.

My take on the signing of Scott Allan, agree we are covered for the moment but could he be a long term investment for Kris. Bottom line is Ronny rates him but the Coaching Staff not so sure. The biggest hurdle Scott needs to get over what the impact will be on the sevco supporting family and friends before he decides if he wants to sign. However, it would be our Le Petite Merde moment and for that I would sign him. Not a business reason I agree but what the hell. Who knows he might turn out just like the other Scott we signed whose family and friends used follow a Club that died. His Dad at least saw the light.

  7. I have no great opinion one way or another about Scott Allan signing for Celtic. The boy has a genuine choice here:

He can choose a contract of several years in duration significantly more than his current wage, with bonuses for winning the SPFL, Cups, CL qualification, progression etc. All with holiday pay. And probably a signing on fee. Maybe some loyalty bonuses. The real chance of winning senior trophies, playing in Europe and being in a high profile club that regularly sells to the EPL if that is where his ambitions lay.

Or he can choose a similar wage to the one he’s on now, no signing on fee, no chance of getting in to European football, worrying if his contract will be fulfilled, joining a club that may or may not have enough cash to get through to the end of the season never mind the end of his contract, the same cahnce of winning senior medals as the rest of the SPFL also rans or indeed the club he’s currently with .

If Celtic want him and their competition is Sevco then Celtic will get him. If he joins someone else it’s because we decide. That’s what being the top club means.

Whatever happens it’ll have been fun to think of the angst this is causing the horribles….. ha ha

  8. Posted during my lunch time, that I think Scott Allan is a good player, and we can never have too many good players.

Back in May, I posted like many Celtic fans would have done here and elsewhere, that Dylan McGeouch was the make weight, when the rumour was first posted on CQN, hardly rocket salad.

It’s not a surprise move because it’s very clear, the player is for sale, and also obvious therefore he would be linked with Celtic given we are the only club in Scotland likely to be able to meet Hibernian’s valuation, as Aberdeen or Dundee Utd don’t seem to spend beyond a very limited ceiling.

We already know that Rainjurs are ruled out of the equation because Hibernian have said so, not just because they are rivals, but that there was every likeliehood Rainjurs wouldn’t pay the original agreed amount. * see old Rainjurs list of creditors *

A bid from Rotherham was agreed by Hibs and the player flatly refused to enter into discussions with the bidding club because, ‘he wanted to stay in Scotland’

The way transfers work are that Celtic like they did ‘way back when’ sounded out well known old Rainjurs minded Davy Provan and asked him if he would sign for Celtic. We know what he said.

We are about to find out if Scott Allan is a highly motivated professional footballer, that wants to sign for the biggest and best or a new real Rainjurs man.

I hope Sevco will come out and condemn all those supporters on twitter who are saying nasty things about scott allan if he decides to signs for Celtic.

On a lighter note. Sign Scott Allan and loan him to Sevco for a year. Celtic need a local feeder club.

  12. I would be shocked if SA came to Celtic,

thems are already putting pressure on other players to speak to him, to wait and go to the new club.

  13. LEFTCLICKTIC on 13TH AUGUST 2015 6:06 PM

That would have been CM67 and his Bros.

Did you watch the game with them?

    Keep the Faith!

    Hai Hail!

  14. Scott Allen, is this a diversionary tactic we would accuse the MSM of attempting? Don’t really care to be honest. Players like Dylan and Liam will thrive at Hibs and go in and have good careers, in my opinion the lad Allen looks a bit more street wise and capable than the two of them, I also think he will be as good as Rogic in terms of a good SPL player. Tom has a lovely touch but likes to admire his touches.

I am still smarting from our poor showing last night, hopefully arses duly kicked and lessons learned from players and staff alike.

Looking ahead ( well I think I am) to my 3rd 5k treadmill run this week on Friday afternoon. Hopefully no after effects to last nights run, so fingers crossed.

On logging into this gem of a blog, I have only two questions: wtf is a burrito; and why am I wanted as a model?

On Allan, I’ve only seen him in the odd game and, now, whats on youtube.

His main attribute seems to be picking the ‘killer’ pass. i’ve no idea on his ratio of success in this but its something we sorely need.

Would need to be stronger on the ball, and seems to be prone to long quiet spells in a game, but maybe that can be coached out.

Its the market we’re in, a gamble

Anyone else unhappy about a self confessed Rangers fan, who wanted to transfer to the filth, playing for Celtic? I know what you’re going to say, Kenny Dalglish was a Rangers fan and all that, but seriously, what are we playing at? The boy’s done well at Hibs in the Championship but he’s no Kenny Dalgleish! Is he really any better than the youngsters we have coming through? We have lots of good young players, I’d far rather give them a game than this.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/33905902

Another point, while I think MacKay Steve and Armstrong are good players, I don’t think we should be signing too many players from Scotland. We can get young players of far better quality and give them some experience. We need other good SP players to test our team.
