ALEX’S ANGLE: RODGERS NONSENSE

0

THERE is more likelihood of Brendan Rodgers becoming an astronaut than becoming the new manager of Nottingham Forest.

I thought I would attempt to obliterate the guff that has seeped onto the back page of one Sunday tabloid and spilled into some media outlets.

Maybe Rodgers is much admired by the English club’s owner, Evangelos Mariniakis, with a rift apparently developing between the mega-wealthy Greek and the present incumbent of the dug-out, Nuno Espirito Santo.

The so-called newspaper exclusive has triggered speculation the Celtic boss will up sticks for a second time and head back to the Midlands.

And pigs might sprout wings and learn to fly.

Rodgers may well be coveted by Mariniakis. Who knows? Who cares?

JOB WELL DONE…Brendan Rodgers at the end of Celtic’s 3-0 win over Livingston.

I have no inclination to add to the substantial bank accounts of those people in the turf accountancy business – and I have known a few bookies in my time – but if I did have a shekel or two to spare, I would put money on a bloke called Ange Postecoglou getting the City Ground gig.

In any case, the last time I looked, Forest still had a head coach and he is preparing his troops for the 2pm kick-off against Crystal Palace today.

Possibly, the ejector button will be utilised moments after the final whistle, but it is poor sport to name a manager while the present team boss is still giving his pre-match team talk.

Unless that was a hologram or an exceptionally gifted lookalike impersonator who faced the media scrum on Friday, I’m pretty certain Brendan Rodgers told the universe and its auntie that he had no intention of going anywhere while he still has the guts of a third and final year to run on his contract.

The Irishman’s exact words were: “No chance. Absolutely no chance. No chance. We’ve done that one before. It didn’t go down well!”

Seems fairly emphatic to me. How about you?

I wrote in this column four months ago – you can read it here – that “Rodgers realises his credibility will plunge through the earth’s core if he stages a second walk-out at the club. And he knows there will be no coming back this time.”

Seems the Celtic manager agrees with those sentiments.

For what it’s worth, I believe when Rodgers does leave the club it will be for sunnier climes.

And I’m not talking about Millport.
