All about Celtic across the city

116

Back in the days, when some of us were predicting financial meltdown across the city, we were mocked by commentators in the old media for focussing too much on Rangers.  How the world has flipped.  At Newco’s EGM yesterday, chairman Andrew Cavenagh’s focus was somewhere else in the city – Celtic.

“Our rivalry with Celtic, Rangers wouldn’t quite be the same without that rivalry.”  Can you imagine a Celtic chairman saying the same to supporters?  Compare and contrast to Peter Lawwell’s comments as Rangers slipped into administration in 2012:

“We look after ourselves.” “We don’t rely on any other club.”  “”We have a stand-alone strategy, a stand-alone financial plan.”

The new sheriff in charge across the city explained to his shareholders he believes they need Celtic.  We are the reason he bought into Newco, we bring the glamour, we bring international relevance, we are champions worthy or rivalling.  Newco are a division, within a division, on the coattails of a dominant champion.  And £20n?  It wiill keep the lights on for a year, maybe a little longer.  They will need to sell in order to buy in any significant way without a lot more cash coming in.  You know this, everyone knows this, why the pretence that £20m is a lot of money?

Another wee tale about Luggy, it seems that he had moved to live in Balmaha, a place close to my heart as its only around half an hour by road from Balloch plus the old Maid of the Loch on its Loch Lomond cruises used to stop there, so every Sunday during the summer, within reason, we as a family used to picnic there.

i have a gret picture of maid of the loch up on blocks if i ever win the lottery i will get it repaired.

what do you feel about the propsed flamingo land development ? that parcel of land i am sure in my youth it was a goods yard or a depot but definately industrial, i struggle little with the objectors arguments about the natural environment, the loch itself being huge ?

If Khun goes I will miss him, but he has done little in the second part of the season.

    hmmm,

i say he did less than that high watermark great run of form september/october/nov.

and his form shaded ……………… and he got subbed often when not playing as well as he did before.

but ………. if we say the 2nd half is january to ma

    he scored against,

dundee, st mirren, united and hibs, adding 3 assists, all games that celtic won/

most of all though, he scored in munich.

Excellent response. I see what you are saying. I still think that he had not pushed on in the way that he could. Still well thought out response. I will miss him if he goes.

*there’s more than meets the eye there, yes it looks as if it could be a god send with the abundance of jobs created in a deprived area, but is it, I know lots of those objecting to it and its more about the type of jobs, minimum wage, and zero hours contracts than the decimation of the area, so is seen as a cash grab by the rich and powerful, Lomond Shores adjacent to it was previously a well known picnic spot where I often swam as a result of the sandy beach and shallow waters in a Loch that’s notorious for sharp drops so was always pretty safe.

Also, and this IMHO is the main complaint, is the amount of traffic that will spill off the A82, a marvellous road which runs from Glasgow to Inverness connecting to the A11for Stirling etc but for this development they would have to use Balloch Road unless there is an addition to the Lomond Shores parking lots close by to the old Luss Road.

Having grown up in Balloch from the age of 7 we would seriously cringe when the good weather came and the tourist descended on us, lets not forget back in the day the train would run up to Balloch Pier so at least that part was solved but now with the increase of vehicular traffic, the old Balloch Bridge which used to be so congested with pedestrians spilling on to the road, now that’s been partially eradicated by the addition of larger footpaths on each side of it plus it did widen the road to traffic but still not large enough for the projected traffic which would have to be justified to enable such a project to be completed

As for the A82, it has its own problems trying to maintain a good flow of traffic toward Luss, Crianlarich and onwards to Oban and Inverness without any addition to it, it seems that the West Dunbartonshire Council has washed its hands of it so its over to Holyrood to either cancel it or if not to produce the funds for major road widening on the A82 and the slip roads down to the projected development

As for the lands that is still there, well British Rail owned a huge amount and when Balloch Pier Station was open with maintenance yards were there for any remedial works to be carried out plus there were other workshops in the area, as well as popular winching spots after the pubs and clubs spilled out and of course sunny Sunday afternoons, they will be disturbed now.

As you say it was a bit of a decrepit area but I haven’t been up that way for years and I doubt its like that now with all the pedestrian traffic to visit the Maid and Lomond Shores, and it s also a big Loch with lots of beauty spots so again its NOT about spoiling the scenery but the usual big business again trying to increase their profits.

  7. I see that Shaun Maloney is to come back to Celtic as the Pathway manager for the Celtic Academy players.

As this role is to ensure that young players are given an indication of their route into the first team. The unspoken intent is to keep youngsters from being cherrypicked by other clubs which has regularly being snapped up at little cost but initial larger salaries.

Is Shaun the right person for this job? Well consider this, look at Shauns Celtic career, He joined club in 1999 and signed pro in 2001. He left Celtic for Aston Villa in 2007, after signing a pre=contract with Villa. Celtic received only around £1m,

In 2008 Shaun Maloney resigned for Celtic at a reported £3m Transfer fee.

In 2011 Shaun again left Celtic this time for Wigan for a fee of £850k.

Surprisingly, after stopping playing. Shaun again returned to Celtic in a coaching role in 2017. It was no surprise when he left for the third time in 2018 for a role with Belgium national team.

In 2021,When Hibs manager I believe Shaun reported that in games against Celtic that officials showed bias in Celtic favour.

I contend that Shaun is ill suited for this role other than an example of what is wrong with players who leave the club. He himself made his debut for first team at 17 and played 215 games for the first team. He cost the club £3m to bring back and his outgoing transfers gained only £1.85m.

With his track record, I dont see him staying for long.

The day after John Clark passed away as well

  8. Bigbhoy,

You may be right regarding Shaun Malhoney’s staying power Time will tell.

But he certainly has the credentials having come through the Academy himself and he has a wide knowledge of coaching.

What is pertinent in this ambitious appointment is that Celtic have acknowledged we need more from our Academy.

    Hear , hear to that.

  9. Good Morning Celts…

    Bigbhoy @ 11:26 pm, Greenpinata @ 1:45 am,

Shaun Maloney like others coming through the ranks with Celtic at that time, was greatly underappreciated.

He was trying to negotiate an improved contract with Celtic and stated he wanted to stay with Celtic but the Boathe would not give him an improved offer and were more than happy to sell him.

Around the same time, they bought Scottish Internationalist and SPL player of the year Paul Hartley for the similar amount of money they sold Shaun for.

Remember it was thought you cannot play Nakamura and Shaun in the same team.

Nakamura played 50 games that season, Shaun played 15.

Worth watching the Dunfermline 1 – 8 Celtic highlights again – a few cameos and a great goal by Shaun

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=e_zSZZIkmTQ&pp=0gcJCfwAo7VqN5tD

CELTIC: Boruc, Telfer, Balde, McManus, Wilson, Petrov (Nakamura 80), Lennon, Keane (Thompson 67), Maloney, Hartson (Dublin 63), Zurawski.

Subs Not Used: Marshall, Pearson, Lawson, Ferry.

Of course we must point out Shaun Maloney’s injury issues but it was very difficult to make your mark as an academy player at Celtic in those days.*

Just look at the experienced Internationals we were signing.

Shaun had great technical skill, pace, and could hit a dead ball.

Yet, his career at Celtic was stunted, home grown was not appreciated.

We are seeing similar issues with good Celtic B team players currently, so Shaun’s experience is ideal in that regard.

Add to that he has worked in Celtic’s development squad before, let’s be frank, our set up at that time needed restructuring and the environment a huge upgrade; we are now seeing taking place, long overdue* – Shaun would be only too aware of that.

He has coaching experience at a much higher level than anyone else in our youth/development set up.

He has worked with the top Spanish Manager Roberto Martinerez, he knows what Celtic is all about and will be keen to see the bhoys getting opportunities that were rationed to him and many others.

Now I can see the point of getting someone in with a different background and approach annd not one of the bhoys, but for me Shaun is that, he has spent a significant time at other set up, in various positions – he is the ideal candidate for the position.

*Remember in 2005 Celtic had a share issue to raise funds to “build” an academy, now twenty years later, we are seeing that money spent on an academy.

    Hail Hail

Good ‘signing’ by BR , to get Shaun Maloney back after his first spell at the club during which Brendan Rodgers raved about him as a coach.

Shaun’s fourth separate Celtic spell twice as many as BR as a player or coach! This time his role is the club’s professional player pathway manager – whatever that entails.

    ===========================

    From CHATGBT

Absolutely — the £20 million isn’t actual football revenue (like ticket sales or TV deals) but an equity capital injection by the new owners.

🔍 Why it’s not recorded as “football revenue”

Rangers’ owners invested £20 million as fresh capital — typically logged on the balance sheet as shareholder funds, not in the profit and loss (P&L) under turnover.

Revenue, on the other hand, comes from:

    Matchday income (tickets, hospitality)

    Broadcasting/UEFA competitions

    Commercial deals (sponsorships, merchandise)

📌 So you’ll not find the £20 m listed in revenue lines in club financial statements — instead, it appears as contributed capital in accounting disclosures.

🔍 Sources to support your claim:

News report on the takeover clearly states the money is “injected” into the club—not generated through operations

    reddit.com

Financial summaries/explained reports often mention that capital injections by shareholders are not included in UEFA licensing revenue (they only count operational revenue).

If Sevco-sympathisers push back, you can point them to either:

Rangers’ annual report (look under “shareholder funds” or “capital injection”)

SFA/UEFA licensing docs, which differentiate capital from turnover

📁 Where to look in practice:

Company filings: UK Companies House entries for Rangers show “share capital” under the statement of financial position—even in private company returns.

UEFA licensing reports (typically shared by the SFA or published internally) exclude capital injections from revenue calculations — only operating income counts.

    ✅ TL;DR

The £20 million is owner equity, not football revenue.

It won’t appear in P&L (turnover), UEFA licensing income totals, or matchday/commercial lines.

It won’t be available to sign players directly under UEFA rules (revenue matters there, not capital injections).

Let me know if you’d like guidance on finding the exact line items in annual accounts—or a concise breakdown comparing Rangers’ profit & loss vs. ownership equity!

I dont remember Shaun being under appreciated or finding it hard to make it into the first team. I remember his debut at Ibrox as an 18 year old. He was a first team starter long before he left, he won all the poty awards, players, fans journalists.

None of us know the details of the contract that Shaun was offered, but was we do know is that he signed a pre contract with Villa in January so rather than being “sold,” Villa paid a fee to get him in early, £1m was decent money.

What we also do know is that he felt appreciated enough to come back 18 months after leaving. His homesickness and return wouldnt suggest he felt underappreciated.

The year he left was a decent one for academy players – we had Marshall, Captain McManus, Kennedy, O’Dea, Maloney, McGeady, Beattie.

Who knows if he’ll do a better job than O’Dea, or what sort of job Darren did. I’m not sure what sort of position I would be in to judge the success or otherwise, I’d be lying if I said I was

  18. I don’t think it makes that much initial difference that the £20 m is to be used for running costs and not player recruitment .

It just means that £20 of the football income is not used for running costs and, and they have £20 more of football income to spend of player recruitment.
