Team for weds if cal is injured Rogic amd Maeda away I think??)

    Hart

    Juranovic, CCV, Starfelt, Taylor

    Hatate Bitton O’Riley

    Forest Giako Jota

No idea where O’Riley is in terms of first team readiness but we need a 10!

    ——-

Robert – That team doesn’t look to bad.

I think you will be spot on with that.

Surely Matty bhoy was playing for his former club before we signed him.

    D :)

  2. It looks a strong line up and then you remember the unique atmosphere of the mini hard dome which is probably more bitter and hate filled than Ibrox…..

8 of our players are likely to play there for the first time on Wednesday.

  3. Like many others

Think it is high time Celtic PLC – our CEO and Chairman are Lawyers, took legal action against FtSFA referees.

How many red card tackles have we to endure, that are missed or ignored by the refs

Time to put a stop to this Celtic – Protect your Employees

P.S. pink tie Ponsonby will be all over this like a rash lol

    very poor……….dearie dearie me!

  5. If fit, do we play Abada on Wed or give JF a start? 3 points are essential so strongest team should start.

  6. BURNLEY78 on 23RD JANUARY 2022 7:50 AM

Who is the mib for Wednesday ?

BURNLEY, a few years ago I arrived a wee bit tardy for the start of the game and had to excuse myself as I caused nearly 30 good Tims to stand up and let me in to my seat in the North Stand. Game just kicking off and as I sat down I asked the guy to my right “Who’s the MIB today?” “Does it matter?” was his terse reply. “Point taken” says I!

  7. How will we cope without Callum? The prize idiot who thinks he’s no more than a squad player won’t be worried of course. Why did Ange have to play him? I’m not interested in the Cup and the Conference League this season.

  8. THEBHOYWITHMCGRAININHISSIDE @ 4:45 PM,

No worries. Debate is healthy and useful so there’s no need to apologise for it.

I agree in that in Scotland there does not appear to be a statutory definition of sectarianism. Why do you think that is?

As you have confirmed there is case law however which holds the singing of certain rangers songs to be religious/ racially aggravated offences.

There is also case law which holds that singing songs with references to the IRA, especially those which implied approval of that organisation, cannot be considered an offence aggravated by religious prejudice.

This is because Courts have upheld the view that the IRA was a republican military organisation, was not sectarian in intent and that those who showed support for it, real or rhetorical, were not showing “malice or ill will towards members of a religious group’’.

Is the singing of these songs sectarian because in Scotland the songs pit unionists against republicans? Not really imo. There are unionists within the Celtic support. There may even be unionist supporting Celtic fans and republican supporting Celtic fans within the same family. This was echoed in the referendum campaign where time and again unionists and republicans were seen within family groups. So much like your Non Zionist Jews v Zionist Jews example can this really be considered sectarian as surely families come from the same communal identity?

I suggest that the reason why there’s no legislative definition of sectarianism in Scotland is not because it’s impossible, but because it wouldn’t achieve what law makers want it to.

Which brings us to the offensive behaviour act. This was an attempt to sidestep jurisprudence and level the playing field. To make each side as bad as the other. Unfortunately it was dreamt up on the hoof, was really bad law which damaged a lot of peoples’ lives, and was ultimately unworkable. This is why imo it was repealed. Had it been really bad law which Courts were enforcing it’s likely it would still be on the book today.

Well you get to the nub of the matter; what is sectarian in Scotland today and why does the Scottish establishment try to manage it?

Back when my parents were married in 50s, WoS the “divide” then was clearly Religion. Both my parents were Catholic and both had six siblings.

There was Religious bigotry mainly in the form of discrimination by certain Protestants against Catholics, it had a quintessential Scottishness to it. Although it wasn’t overt, it was ubiquitous and it was possible for Companies, Organisations and Football Clubs to have a sectarian employment policy.

Now some of my Aunts/Uncles married Protestants, it was reasonably rare then and had been even rarer the generation before. Marriages between Catholics and Protestants were referred to as a “mixed marriage” and there was a stigma associated to that – for instance they could not get married in a Catholic Church.

There were clear and defined lines then, politically the vast majority from both Communities voted Labour.

The Protestant Establishment, bigotted working class Protestants and the well to do and aspirational often voted for the Conservative and Unionist party.

Three generations since, things are very different now, there is a real mixed soup and the inherent quintessential bigotry and discrimination has subsided but due to the escalating of the conflict in the North of Ireland, the Unionist and Republician identities have become much more significant and you now have “cultural” Catholics and Protestants.

So unlike the folk of Ulster who had to deal with the real nasty malevolent side of sectarianism Scotland’s bigotry evolved into an odd cultural sectarianism.

Now, although this bigotry is regarded as “Scotland’s Shame” and the Scottish Government and people wish to eradicate it, old sensitivities remain. So rather than grabbing the bull by the horns and tackling sectarianism where it manifests in organisations, cultural events, football clubs and within communities, they wish to be partial and selective.

And you have some incredible hotch potch initiatives, such as the OBaF Bill, the 2015 Advisory Group on Tackling Sectarianism in Scotland, the legal definition of sectarianism working group.

    Some belters in here…

    https://www.gov.scot/publications/final-report-working-group-defining-sectarianism-scots-law/pages/5/

The 2015 Advisory Group on Tackling Sectarianism in Scotland defined sectarianism in Scotland as:

…a mixture of perceptions, attitudes, actions, and structures that involves overlooking, excluding, discriminating against or being abusive or violent towards others on the basis of their perceived Christian denominational background. This perception is always mixed with other factors such as, but not confined to, politics, football allegiance and national identity.

    Seriously now!?

    The what is sectarian?

… although the language of sectarianism is used by the Northern Irish legislation, the word “sectarian” is not further defined in the 2011 Act, though attempts were made to do so during the legislative process. The Minister responsible for the Bill proposed the following legal definition:

For the purposes of this section chanting is of a sectarian nature if it consists of or includes matter which is threatening, abusive or insulting to a person by reason of that person’s religious belief or political opinion or to an individual as a member of such a group.

Then when does the Scottish Government get to implement legislation on sectarian issues.

If equal opportunities ceased to be a reserved matter – or Schedule 5 of the Scotland Act was amended to give the Scottish Parliament additional competence over equal opportunities – incorporating a civil definition of sectarian discrimination, victimisation and harassment into Scots Law would become feasible and we recommend that in such circumstances the Scottish Government should revisit this issue.

There is no doubt an appetite in Scotland to eliminate what they look upon as sectarian.

Celtic claim to be a club open to all and if we are, we need to rid ourselves of the sectarian element. Keep the playing and singing of the rebs to our Homes, Cars, Pubs, Gigs… whatever but keep it out of Celtic Park.

    Hail Hail

  9. Last night was a game CalMac didn’t need to play. The fact he seems to play every minute of every game is an indication of how significant his loss will be over the next few weeks.

  10. While I don’t underestimate the importance of Calum McGregor to our team, I do think one positive result is that he will be forced to have a proper rest from playing. He has played way too much football over the last few seasons without any respite. If it isn’t for Celtic, it has been for Scotland.

    THEBHOYWITHMCGRAININHISSIDE @ 4:45 PM,

    ————————

Good discussion folks – very interesting.

On your last point “…Celtic claim to be a club open to all and if we are, we need to rid ourselves of the sectarian element. Keep the playing and singing of the rebs to our Homes, Cars, Pubs, Gigs… whatever but keep it out of Celtic Park…”

The singing yesterday at Alloa was well beyond any argument about the sectarian nature, or otherwise, of Irish Rebel songs. We had full-on, no argument, open-and-shut sectarianism – really offensive stuff that puts us very firmly in the same bracket as the Huns.

The bastardisation of ‘We’re on the One Road’ to include the ’70s add-on “…soon there’ll be no Protestants at all…” was heard loud and clear – sickening. Two sides of the same coin to any reasonable, neutral observer – no argument.

Celtic fans had – and I think the past-tense is getting dangerously close – a wonderful reputation that has been slipping away over recent years through the boorish, leery behaviour, actions and songs of a section of our support.

It is insidious – at least as harmful to Celtic as the actions / inactions of some our custodians that we discuss on here ad-nauseam.

Feel completely powerless to do anything about it.

  13. AN DÚN

    Agreed.

The manager said that he wanted to build a squad to allow him to rotate and rest players. Then plays Mcgregor against Alloa, when we have massive league games in the next few weeks.

    Poor decision.

  14. A number of my relatives are Villa season tickets holders (Celtic fans too by association) and they had mixed feelings when Gerrard got the job. Part of their concern was whether he was technically and tactically up to it. They sought my views. Those were, left to his own devices he’ll struggle but if he can persuade Beale to go with him he’ll do ok. It’s the latter who is the brains of the top heavy Gerrard managerial team. Slippy better hope that Beale has no ambitions to be a manager in his own right.

    Agree with that.

Also – the timing of the signings in this area of the park – Hatate and O’Riley – is really fortunate. Both look like crackers – and both fit and first-team ready.

Hatate, Bitton, O’Riley would do for me.

Also – I liked the fact that McCarthy went through the prick who did Guchi – long, long overdue to have a Celtic midfielder happy to take a yellow for dishing out some retribution. More of that please.

That was an excellent read on the nature of sectarianism in Scotland and the north of Ireland (not Ulster – sorry to be pedantic). I also think you’ve summarised the situation very accurately in terms of the change in the religious and political demographic since the 1950s to the current day.

  19. Worrying too much about Hearts.Start of the season we had what we had,and totally dominated the game.75% of the ball, and they were being booed by their own fans.If not for the robbery of the disallowed goal,we would have gone onto score more. They were gone, passed off the park.

We still can put out a team far superior.

  21. Just off the top of my head from yesterday tackles from yesterday, Welsh elbow from Sammon into his neck face, game stopped no booking, Jota was tackled right through the back of him no chance of getting the ball I think it was Jota’s first touch of the ball, game stopped no booking, Gucci a leg breking follow through that inverted his ankle severely from Niang, booked, King shoulder to the side of McGregor’s face , red card in Rugby Union as they realise how dangerous that is, no sanction on King,Abada tackled for the back by Niang no sanction, Abada limps off, just to even the bookings up McCarthy for coming through the back of Niang, strange that the guy who did this to Jota was let off.

  22. BGFC @ 11:34 AM,

We were exchanging, comments on this subject yesterday and my brother called, guess what was blaring out in the background – ironies of ironies…

You sound let down and frustrated and no wonder, we might have got through to the next round of the Cup but the physical damage to our players and the Celtic support reputation continues.

After Seville Celtic Supporters were officially named the “Best in the World”

What happened to the smart, looking out for each other, open to all, self policing. … Celtic support?
