Amazonians, the Window of Opportunity

643

“It’s just a dream come true”, the words of 20-year-old Holmbert Fridjonsson, who today signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic and will join the club on 1 January.  5’ 9” manager, Neil Lennon, told Celticfc.net that the 6’3” striker is “a good size”, perhaps giving a glimpse into the innermost thoughts guiding Celtic’s recruitment policy, for those who have not noted the collection of Amazonians now in hoops.

Holmbert will push for a place with Anthony Stokes, Teemu Pukki and Amido Balde; Georgios Samaras is seldom used as a conventional striker.  He has made 45 career appearances, five fewer than Victor Wanyama when he signed for Celtic, also as a 20-year-old.

A year ago, when Victor was busy declining a new contract offer, we talked about the window of opportunity, when you have enough appearances to judge a player, but not so many that the world and their grannie knows about him.  We concluded that less than 30 appearances would be enough.  Victor made a total of 61 Celtic appearances but was his stock rose stratospherically after 30-odd games. The stats suggest we should catch them between 30 and 60 appearances.

Stunning result for Gordon Strachan’s Scotland last night.  Keep an eye on that guy, he’s got talent.

Really looking forward to another great charity night at the Columba Club, Blantyre, on Friday, starting at 8pm, where we are having a Q&A with myself, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and Paul McConville, in aid of the Lourdes Fund.  These are always great nights, tickets are available at the door, get along and say ‘hello’.

Many thanks to the hundreds of you have now ordered the CQN Annual, and for all the encouraging feedback.  It’s a bit big for a stocking filler, unless perhaps you’re an Amazonian.

See you Friday.

Holmbert? Isn’t that what Kojo says to his driver when he get’s into his car after several large ones and a cigar?

    Indeed!

By the way – I may be wrong, but I thought many Amazonian tribes were famed for their short stature, no? Were the taller tribes not in African regions, like the Watusi (spelling?) something similar? I may of course be entirely incorrect!

    Good on you mate.

However, as much as donations we need people to man the buckets.

C’mon folks it’s only a couple of hours out of your lives but could make a real difference!

  4. So Holmbert is the striker the manager said he wanted in January, any chance an attacking midfield playmaker to go with a back up left back and centre half?

For me the ECA “endorsement” is meaningless.

The ECA carry no authority as regards the writing and policing of rules intended to preserve sporting integrity. Their agenda is business not sport and UEFA are the balancing mechanism (or should be).

If RIFC are to use the European avenue of endorsement and they have, then the ASA must approach UEFA as the official custodians of football rules to see if they can give a similar endorsement as the ECA.

I suggest the complainer make this point and ask ASA to approach UEFA to ask them what THEIR principles are for dealing with a club who have been liquidated as articulated in Article 12 of UEFA FFP.

Once that is know the question to be asked is do the SFA have a similar deterrent equivalent and why not?

Try not to be too embarrassed. I take it from your scouting knowledge you knew all about Wanyama and Izzaguire?

  19. Afternoon all…

After reading about how Celtic are likely to be playing their first Champions League qualification game just two days after Virgil van Dijk has played against Efe Ambrose in the World Cup Final, and before Fraser Forster and Georgios Samaras have returned to the club following their World Cup semi-final heartbreak… so I got to thinking how might Celtic’s line-up look for those crucial early qualification games, wherever (other than Celtic Park) they may be played.

The following is the best that I could come up with, pitching experienced first team players (in secondary positions as necessary) ahead of lesser experienced players (due to the importance of Celtic’s progress in the CL):

    Zaluska

    Matthews Lustig Mulgrew Ledley

    Brown Kayal Commons Forrest

    Pukki Stokes

    Subs:

    Fasan

    Fisher, Mouyokolo, Fraser

Biton, McGeouch, Irvine (if returned from loan)

Baldé, Fridjonsson, Watt (if returned from loan)

It does look like we need to ger another 2 or 3 (at least) reinforcements in. But most of the decent players will be away at the World Cup Finals, so presumably, if we want to get any quality players, we’ll need to be looking to mid to upper ranked countries like Sweden who have failed to qualify.

    Any thoughts…

Apart from the price what else do you place your evaluation on?

Have you seen the lad or do you not trust the judgement of those who thought him worth the punt (and are, whether we like it or not in a punter’s market) or have you seen him and think you are a better judge than those who thought it worth taking a punt?

I’d just wait and see until I had more to base a judgement on than the price.

  23. ryecatcher I,d have thought the trick is to get in before the bidding starts. You,ve obviously seen the lad play and are not impressed. Care to share that knowledge with those of us who don,t have that advantage, until then I,ll reserve judgement on young Holbert and wish him all the best. Hail Hail Hebcelt

Glasgowdave – much appreciated sir! See you at CP on Saturday.

Anyone else prepared to stand up for their fellow fans?

For your info – two of the guys (one a CQN lurker) who attended the meeting on Monday will be organising and taking part in the collection, miss most of the game as they check in the buckets and bag the money…and THEN do a night-shift at their work!!!

All because they are angry at the treatment dished out to their fellow Celtic supporters & they are determined to help them AND restore the excellent reputation of the travelling Hoops support!

I dont have a valid passport so couldn’t visit my celtic brothers if needed.

I am not in a position to help them financially, and I cannot reach them to put an arm round their shoulder and tell them I am behind them and they DO NOT WALK ALONE.
