Amazonians, the Window of Opportunity

643

“It’s just a dream come true”, the words of 20-year-old Holmbert Fridjonsson, who today signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic and will join the club on 1 January.  5’ 9” manager, Neil Lennon, told Celticfc.net that the 6’3” striker is “a good size”, perhaps giving a glimpse into the innermost thoughts guiding Celtic’s recruitment policy, for those who have not noted the collection of Amazonians now in hoops.

Holmbert will push for a place with Anthony Stokes, Teemu Pukki and Amido Balde; Georgios Samaras is seldom used as a conventional striker.  He has made 45 career appearances, five fewer than Victor Wanyama when he signed for Celtic, also as a 20-year-old.

A year ago, when Victor was busy declining a new contract offer, we talked about the window of opportunity, when you have enough appearances to judge a player, but not so many that the world and their grannie knows about him.  We concluded that less than 30 appearances would be enough.  Victor made a total of 61 Celtic appearances but was his stock rose stratospherically after 30-odd games. The stats suggest we should catch them between 30 and 60 appearances.

Stunning result for Gordon Strachan’s Scotland last night.  Keep an eye on that guy, he’s got talent.

Really looking forward to another great charity night at the Columba Club, Blantyre, on Friday, starting at 8pm, where we are having a Q&A with myself, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and Paul McConville, in aid of the Lourdes Fund.  These are always great nights, tickets are available at the door, get along and say ‘hello’.

Many thanks to the hundreds of you have now ordered the CQN Annual, and for all the encouraging feedback.  It’s a bit big for a stocking filler, unless perhaps you’re an Amazonian.

See you Friday.

  1. Peter appears to have affected Sevco shares and achieved the near impossible by further enraging the Orcs on FF:

“If the SFA do nothing and say Liewwell has no case to answer then we as a club should sue him personally for his remarks saying that he has tried to damage the brand reputation of our club.”

    ——

    “Let us be honest here.

Everyone in Scottish football knows that Regan is a placeman, and that he is in Celtc FC’s pocket.

Everyone knows that Liewell has got himself inside the SFA to maintain and complete the corrupt stranglehold that The [Celts] now have on Scottish football.

    Even the neutrals know this.

What keeps their mouths shut is that they now hate Rangers more than they love Scottish football.

This is the harvest of two decades of the unchallenged sowing of phress and mhedia negatives about our club and support.

    It is like Stalinist Russia.

We have a long war on our hands in Scotland.

But it starts by fighting the first battle.

    That is how war works.

Fortunately, like Stalinist Russia, our enemies are incompetent, egotistical and perhaps a wee bit complacent in their total power.”

    ——

“Honestly, the club and the RFFF* should take him and these ASA complainees and any other troll still mouthing off against us to the court and sue them for libel, slander, malicious gossip, you name it. Only that will shut them up for good.”

    ——

“[T]hat remark… is a clear attempt to undermine our commercial integrity.”

    ——

“Following Liewells jibe the share price has fallen. You could argue that his comments adversly affected the share price of his largest competitor.”

  2. Hi Paul67,

Welcome to Holmbert, good luck to the new bhoy!

Good to see us proactive in the signings but would still like most of our twenty year olds coming through the Academy, we seem to have several strategies for player recruitment some more successful than others.

Those of us who are parents, watch our kids grow. We teach them right from wrong and hope they take the right path in life. We lead by example. We take them to their first game in Paradise we watch their excitement and joy as they watch our team win; we share their pain when their team lose!

We then send them off to their first European Away game with their friends, they are good bhoys never been in bother, not big drinkers. Just out for a good time following Celtic. Your bhoy doesn’t come home as he has been arrested and remanded in a foreign jail! To make matters worse there are pictures of him all over the internet covered in blood and you can’t get to him. You don’t know what to do, who to turn to? That is what is facing just one family!

Thankfully the Celtic Trust has been there, they have organised lawyers for all the bhoys old and young!

Please give up some of your time and help be a buckateer, help make a difference.

Stalin was many things; paranoid, devious, ruthless and , occasionally, sentimental but he was never complacent. If he ever had a complacent thought he would have had the thought taken out and shot.

Was it BRTH who posted that Ian Bankier read out at the start of the AGM “This is a private meeting” so basically PL and anyone else can say what they think without stupid stupid sevco being able to do a thing about it.

  8. A wee snippet or three from the Discussion Board of the LSE on RFC stock:

    1. Would appear to be an excellent signing. However, rumour that his appointment will only be confirmed if the current board remain in place after the AGM. There appears little chance of this, but maybe a qualified new CEO will swing the vote. As I said, Rangers appear to have acquired a capable and qualified CEO. Will he still be around when he gets a look at the books?

    2. Perhaps share price movement was due to fact that another site – has released an excerpt from SPFL board minutes that show they will now chase the newco for a £250K fine that was imposed on the oldco for the EBT scandal. As SPFL cannot recover from liqudated company they have decided it is a footballing debt which newco agreed to cover as part of the 5 way agreement. Seems like everybody is trying to get their cash before second admin. Sell now before left with nothing.

    3. Only 1/3 of the way through the season, but pretty much all serious revenues are in or accounted for, short of selling players – but having added 9 players to their previously depleted squad why would they sell? Outgoings may change, but only adversely IMO. I’m back to “sell”.

  10. Sorry for the cliche but peanuts will attract monkeys at the top level in any sport…..lots of cliches are true nevertheless.

Do we aspire to be an elite football club or do we love having megadosh to pay bonuses to Lawell and the like?

Maybe if the scouting department did their jobs properly then we wouldn’t have to buy up potential from footballing backwaters and NL would have a young talent pool like Jackie Mac has at Tannadice?

  11. Auldheid

ASA Asssessment for you to consider:

Whilst the ASA acknowledged that Newco had nit taken on all the debts and liabilities of Oldco when it purchased its assets and business and that that would normally preclude a business from trading on the reputation of a liquidated predecessor company, we noted having read its report in full that both an Independent Commission appointed by the SPL and the ECA had reached the conclusion that the football club RFC was a recognisable entity in its own right, and that it had continued in existence despite being transferred to another owner and operator. We consulted with UEFA, which explained that its rules allowed for the recognition of the “sporting continuity” of a club’s match record, even if that club’s corporate structure had changed. We also consulted with the SFA, which confirmed that its definition of a football “club” varied depending on context, and could sometimes refer to an entity separate from the club’s corporate owner. The SFA further pointed out that, following RFC’s transfer to a new corporate owner, Newco did not take a new membership of the SFA but rather that the previous membership was transferred across to them so they could continue as the same member of the SFA. We considered that consumers would understand that the claim in question related to the football club rather than to its owner and operator and we therefore concluded that it was not misleading for the ad to make reference to FRC’s history, which was separate to that of Newco.

  21. What is happening with Tom Rogic at Celtic? Even when Commins has been missing recently he hasn’t had his chance. Last night he came on for Australia with about 25 to go and just about got MOM. The Aussies can’t undertand why he is not a regular and it is now a major concern for them as they see him as vital to their WC aspirations and no doubt will be putting pressure on Celtic to give him a regular gig or loan him out. He himself gavevthe impression in hs after match interview that he was not happy at the lack of game time. I really think NL has a lack of confidence in flair players like Rogic. On that subject i personally believe there is potentially aworld class player in Paddy Mcourt
