Amazonians, the Window of Opportunity

643

“It’s just a dream come true”, the words of 20-year-old Holmbert Fridjonsson, who today signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic and will join the club on 1 January.  5’ 9” manager, Neil Lennon, told Celticfc.net that the 6’3” striker is “a good size”, perhaps giving a glimpse into the innermost thoughts guiding Celtic’s recruitment policy, for those who have not noted the collection of Amazonians now in hoops.

Holmbert will push for a place with Anthony Stokes, Teemu Pukki and Amido Balde; Georgios Samaras is seldom used as a conventional striker.  He has made 45 career appearances, five fewer than Victor Wanyama when he signed for Celtic, also as a 20-year-old.

A year ago, when Victor was busy declining a new contract offer, we talked about the window of opportunity, when you have enough appearances to judge a player, but not so many that the world and their grannie knows about him.  We concluded that less than 30 appearances would be enough.  Victor made a total of 61 Celtic appearances but was his stock rose stratospherically after 30-odd games. The stats suggest we should catch them between 30 and 60 appearances.

Stunning result for Gordon Strachan’s Scotland last night.  Keep an eye on that guy, he’s got talent.

Really looking forward to another great charity night at the Columba Club, Blantyre, on Friday, starting at 8pm, where we are having a Q&A with myself, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and Paul McConville, in aid of the Lourdes Fund.  These are always great nights, tickets are available at the door, get along and say ‘hello’.

Many thanks to the hundreds of you have now ordered the CQN Annual, and for all the encouraging feedback.  It’s a bit big for a stocking filler, unless perhaps you’re an Amazonian.

See you Friday.

“Maybe if the scouting department did their jobs properly then we wouldn’t have to buy up potential from footballing backwaters and NL would have a young talent pool like Jackie Mac has at Tannadice?”

How about Celtic having 10 of the starting 11 for the Scotland Under 15’s and a similar number (almost double figures) for the Scotland U18s squad? As was the case at back end of last season at least.

Not to mention how many times in the last 5-6 years our Under 19s romped their league and cup competitions?

Would that be a decent enough talent pool or scouting effort would you say?

Or does Scotland count as a footballing backwater?

Or could you elaborate a bit further on your thoughts?

I think, I hope I’m wrong, that SFA will come out with statement at some point which confirms their view that Sevco is a continuation of RFC(IL) and therefore carries it’s history forward.

When SFA meet to discuss this Peter Lawell will have to excuse himself from that discussion due to his much publicised comments at our AGM.

We may not like it but this will happen and I think we all already know this.

The SFA like everyone else has no need to make a statement. When they go bust again they will have to start from scratch.

This whole club/company nonsense will be finished.

Just remember the last time PL made a joke about Rangers they went bust. He is smarter than we will ever know.

“Maybe if the scouting department did their jobs properly then we wouldn’t have to buy up potential from footballing backwaters and NL would have a young talent pool like Jackie Mac has at Tannadice?”

The pool at Tannadice is as unproven as the one at Celtic.

Is Ryan Gauld any better than Paul George or Paul McMullan?

is John Soutar any better than Stuart Findlay?

    Is Armstrong better than McGeoch?

To break into the United first team is an easier task than breaking into Celtic’s. It is also easier than breaking into any English Championship squad as demonstrated by returning talents like Goodwillie and Gomis, and the failure of Prince Buaben. Johnny Russell is bucking the trend just now but he is the only one of the recent United graduates to do so.

Our young guys are very good but they have to be great to break into a squad full of internationalists.

Every Celtic signing, including Wanyama, Ledley and Matthews, who cost less than £2m have been dismissed as projects. Others like Ki were dismissed as “shirt sellers”. Others like Kelvin Wilson and Fraser Forster were dismissed as useless based on false perceptions of early form.

You would have thought by now that some humility might be shown about the accuracy of the judgements of minehafters.

P.S. Izzy was the Scottish PFA player of the year so some pros were convinced by him.

ASA Asssessment for you to consider:

Whilst the ASA acknowledged that Newco had nit taken on all the debts and liabilities of Oldco when it purchased its assets and business and that that would normally preclude a business from trading on the reputation of a liquidated predecessor company, we noted having read its report in full that both an Independent Commission appointed by the SPL and the ECA had reached the conclusion that the football club RFC was a recognisable entity in its own right, and that it had continued in existence despite being transferred to another owner and operator. We consulted with UEFA, which explained that its rules allowed for the recognition of the “sporting continuity” of a club’s match record, even if that club’s corporate structure had changed. We also consulted with the SFA, which confirmed that its definition of a football “club” varied depending on context, and could sometimes refer to an entity separate from the club’s corporate owner. The SFA further pointed out that, following RFC’s transfer to a new corporate owner, Newco did not take a new membership of the SFA but rather that the previous membership was transferred across to them so they could continue as the same member of the SFA. We considered that consumers would understand that the claim in question related to the football club rather than to its owner and operator and we therefore concluded that it was not misleading for the ad to make reference to FRC’s history, which was separate to that of Newco.

    +++++++++++++++++++++

Thanks for that on which I was unsighted, which means that UEFA do not see liquidation as ending a clubs sporting history and in sporting terms they are the same club but not in corporate history terms.

The only problem I have with this is where is the deterrent value of using liquidation as a means of dumping debt?

Apart from being exiled from the previous level of football for a time in order to rebuild a history of trust in a club trying to rebuild itself what is to stop a top club attempting what Rangers tried which was to dump debt and just carry on?

The rules must have some deterrent value and not leave it to the conscience of football supporters to decide the fate of a liquidated club attempting a come back.

I am not convinced that they do. In fact as it stands if I were HMRC I would be saying UEFA interpretation that keeps sporting history intact keeps the club intact and the debt is still due.

Time for European tax authorities and UEFA to get their act together.

  11. Token tim…….

None of them will make the first team if we keep spending 100k on players who are the same as them …..i.e….potential starting 11.

What’s the rules for players’ contracts of employment?

Are they employed by the club, or by the ‘owner and operator’ of the club?

I hope our mutual ambitions are fulfilled and you have a successful time at Celtic.

I also hope that he doesn’t get saddled with the nickname, Shuggie.

Sorry, Shug, I know you lurk.

If he has to have a nickname, May I suggest adopting the vacant title, The Iceman, or, The Fridge ; hopefully as a homage to a cold, calculating composure in front of goal.

Progressive Unionist Party and Ulster Political Research Group representatives, acting on behalf of Vanguard Bears, presented a large donation to the staff of the cabin at Twaddell Avenue on Monday evening.

These funds will go towards the running costs for the ongoing protest at the Civil Rights Camp in Ardoyne.”

They just do not know the meaning of Irony do they? Loyalists protesting about civil rights, a bit like the Nazi party complaining about it members being racially abused. what next will the ‘Ulster Scots’ try to stage their own loyalist version of Burntollet bridge or Bloody Sunday. Nasty, delusional, educationally inadequate people just about covers it.

  19. Breeny I,m with you on Tom Rogic we,ve only seen glimpses of him and TBH quite impressive. He obviously needs more game time to show us all what he has got.Hail Hail Hebcelt

  20. Rogic looks a player to me, but Lenny doe sent like.lubo type players, Lenny is more of the defensive type lover, hence why we don’t have a player in the midfield with the vision of the through pass, in my opinion.
