Amazonians, the Window of Opportunity

643

“It’s just a dream come true”, the words of 20-year-old Holmbert Fridjonsson, who today signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic and will join the club on 1 January.  5’ 9” manager, Neil Lennon, told Celticfc.net that the 6’3” striker is “a good size”, perhaps giving a glimpse into the innermost thoughts guiding Celtic’s recruitment policy, for those who have not noted the collection of Amazonians now in hoops.

Holmbert will push for a place with Anthony Stokes, Teemu Pukki and Amido Balde; Georgios Samaras is seldom used as a conventional striker.  He has made 45 career appearances, five fewer than Victor Wanyama when he signed for Celtic, also as a 20-year-old.

A year ago, when Victor was busy declining a new contract offer, we talked about the window of opportunity, when you have enough appearances to judge a player, but not so many that the world and their grannie knows about him.  We concluded that less than 30 appearances would be enough.  Victor made a total of 61 Celtic appearances but was his stock rose stratospherically after 30-odd games. The stats suggest we should catch them between 30 and 60 appearances.

Stunning result for Gordon Strachan’s Scotland last night.  Keep an eye on that guy, he’s got talent.

Really looking forward to another great charity night at the Columba Club, Blantyre, on Friday, starting at 8pm, where we are having a Q&A with myself, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and Paul McConville, in aid of the Lourdes Fund.  These are always great nights, tickets are available at the door, get along and say ‘hello’.

Many thanks to the hundreds of you have now ordered the CQN Annual, and for all the encouraging feedback.  It’s a bit big for a stocking filler, unless perhaps you’re an Amazonian.

See you Friday.

    I’m not a lawyer so cant advise the Dambhoys (IMHO) wrongfully arrested by police officers who again (IMHO) over reactedin a botched clear all operation.

    I dont have a valid passport so couldn’t visit my celtic brothers if needed.

    I am not in a position to help them financially, and I cannot reach them to put an arm round their shoulder and tell them I am behind them and they DO NOT WALK ALONE.

    But I can stand with a bucket for an hour or so before the game on Sat , It may not seem much to some but it is my only way to help so i’m in.

    Also for the reputation of EVERY Celtic fan,which has been severely damaged by the events,and the reporting of them.

    was doing some research for my kids project on the blitz, when we came across this itme about Renfrew ,

    During the night of 13 March 1941, three Polish airmen saved Renfrew’s Roman Catholic church of Saint James. Lance Corporal Pawel Radke, Aircraftman Antoni Ptaszkowski and Aircraftman Zygmunt Sokolowski were at the church and at great risk were extinguishing incendiaries. These had caused a number of fires in the church. Two of the airmen were killed by a bomb and the third died in Alexandria Hospital the following day. They were in their twenties. When 309 Squadron transferred to Dunino in Fife in May 1941, it presented to the church a portrait of Our Lady as a token of their appreciation to the people of Renfrew. Parishioners never forgot the sacrifice and in October 1982 at a special Mass, a silver plaque in memory of the airmen and the portrait of the Black Madonna was blessed and dedicated by Bishop McGill. The plaque was crafted by a local Polish jeweller, Eugeniusz Waclawski.[4]

    What is happening with Tom Rogic at Celtic? Even when Commins has been missing recently he hasn’t had his chance. Last night he came on for Australia with about 25 to go and just about got MOM. The Aussies can’t undertand why he is not a regular and it is now a major concern for them as they see him as vital to their WC aspirations and no doubt will be putting pressure on Celtic to give him a regular gig or loan him out. He himself gavevthe impression in hs after match interview that he was not happy at the lack of game time. I really think NL has a lack of confidence in flair players like Rogic. On that subject i personally believe there is potentially aworld class player in Paddy Mcourt

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I didn’t see the match,but I have watched TR playing for Australia. He is definitely a player,but seems only able to thrive when confident he is allowed to make mistakes.
    He has the trust of the manager at international level,but not at club level. A bit like Ki,perhaps.
    I saw him against Morton. His chance to shine. He wasn’t the worst,but honestly,he started to hide in the second half.
    Canny have that in a player. He has to EARN Neil’s trust. And after that second-half performance,he may find it difficult.
  11. Breaking news:
    SFA statement regarding Rory Bremner fiasco:
    Peter Lawwell was completely wrong to state that “Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair”.
    What he should have said was:
    “Mike Yardwood pretended to be Dennis Healy. Dennis Healy is since passed away.”
    If a player has the talent but lacks confidence then the manager must draw that out of him. I think he’s only 20 but needs the manager to make him feel important, not 15 mins here and there. I think it’s right that he is not Lennon’s type but then why sign him? In my opinion we only have Rogic and Commins who have the X – Factor.
  16. AC Milan
    Milan play Genoa on Saturday . Just heard Genoa’s manager on the radio
    ” We have nothing to fear .–they have won once in their last 6 Serie A games.. The media have them in crisis —– we aim to make that crisis all the bigger “
  17. Winning Captains/Auldheid
    Re. The ASA statement. My take is that they asked UEFA if there is any change in club status with a change in corporate governace of a club and of course there isn’t. We did it in 1994, Man Utd when the Glazers took over, Man City, Chelsea et al.
    They didn’t ask the right question.
    If UEFA accept this then where do we go from here, not just as Celtic supporters but supporters of a so called sport.
  20. Joe Filippis Haircut on
    Tom Rogic has not impressed when given the chance in a Celtic Jersey he disappears very quickly from any game also his body language for a big guy is very poor he slopes around the park as though he has the worries of the World on his shoulders.If he wants a first team place for me he needs to show some urgency and quality when he is given a chance so far I have seen nothing to make me feel he deserves a first team place. H.H.
  21. Breeny
    I agree Rogic is definitely a very good attacking midfielder.
    But as tonydonnelly67 points out, has our gaffer ever made space for an attacking midfielder ?
    ( playing Samaras, Commons or occassionally Paddy in midfield, doesn’t really count, as they’ve been forwards brought back).
    Actually too0 quote Barcabhoy’s post on respected Scottish Football site “The Scottish Football Monitor” (http://www.tsfm.org.uk)
    “According to the recent regulatory news update for AIM last week, the only parties who owned enough shares to be able to sell the 3.328,672 which were sold today are :
    – Artemis
    – Hargreave Hale
    – Laxey
    – Blue Pitch”
    So it’s one of them. I would have thought Blue Pitch a buyer not a seller so which of the other 3 have sold up?
    I would add Chuckles to that list. I presume he still has shares left after his “donation” to Sandy Easdale!
