Amazonians, the Window of Opportunity

643

“It’s just a dream come true”, the words of 20-year-old Holmbert Fridjonsson, who today signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic and will join the club on 1 January.  5’ 9” manager, Neil Lennon, told Celticfc.net that the 6’3” striker is “a good size”, perhaps giving a glimpse into the innermost thoughts guiding Celtic’s recruitment policy, for those who have not noted the collection of Amazonians now in hoops.

Holmbert will push for a place with Anthony Stokes, Teemu Pukki and Amido Balde; Georgios Samaras is seldom used as a conventional striker.  He has made 45 career appearances, five fewer than Victor Wanyama when he signed for Celtic, also as a 20-year-old.

A year ago, when Victor was busy declining a new contract offer, we talked about the window of opportunity, when you have enough appearances to judge a player, but not so many that the world and their grannie knows about him.  We concluded that less than 30 appearances would be enough.  Victor made a total of 61 Celtic appearances but was his stock rose stratospherically after 30-odd games. The stats suggest we should catch them between 30 and 60 appearances.

Stunning result for Gordon Strachan’s Scotland last night.  Keep an eye on that guy, he’s got talent.

Really looking forward to another great charity night at the Columba Club, Blantyre, on Friday, starting at 8pm, where we are having a Q&A with myself, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and Paul McConville, in aid of the Lourdes Fund.  These are always great nights, tickets are available at the door, get along and say ‘hello’.

Many thanks to the hundreds of you have now ordered the CQN Annual, and for all the encouraging feedback.  It’s a bit big for a stocking filler, unless perhaps you’re an Amazonian.

See you Friday.

  1. FFer explains for the hard of thinking:

“Sometimes you have to resort to explaining things in a child-like manner to thick people.

Once there was a chicken called Rangers FC that was born in 1872. The chicken went about its business until many years later it laid an egg (the company). Many, many years later that egg went bad and it had to be thrown away. In 2012 the chicken then laid another egg and so this egg was the new company.

So it does not matter how many eggs come and go…. the chicken has always been, and always will be there.”

Have you a link to that ASA statement. Causing questions on Twitter.

  3. Tom Rogic is a promising development player who is still 20. he is 9 months younger than his fellow Aussie, Jackson Irvine, but Jackson has been playing our game since he was 10 or younger. Rogic was 15 when he took up soccer, having concentrated on the similar game of Futsal. Considering his late development, he is a frightening talent but this also helps account for the Development Work needed.

It is easier to break into the Socceroos WC squad than it is into Celtic’s first 11. if it was just a question of going out on loan to get into the squad, why is Jackson Irvine not selected by Oz?

I think Rogic will come good this season. It has nothing to do with being too attacking and shoehorned distinctions between who is and who is not a true midfielder but it has a lot to do with taking your chances when they are given. Both Biton and Rogic disappointed in some early showings. Biton took his chance in our last match, Rogic will need to take his next one. He will get a chance to do so because Neil does not have favourites; he just picks guys who do a job more consistently than their rivals for a berth.

  4. Australia want us to put Rogic out on loan

I think its a good idea. He could get more games and then a world cup before taking up Joe’s place in the squad next year

  5. I see that Foreign have now lost consecutive games at Wembley for the first time in 36 years.

Hardly good preparation for the WC though it would have been worse/better if it had been 1966….I may be wrong but I think they might have played one (maybe even more) of their games at Wembley in that tournament!

it is all to the good as it forces UEFA to get involved officially, especially if Celtic are accused of bringing the game into disrepute when it is the rules that are disreputable.

  7. John Hartson basically said that any Celtic striker who doesn’t score at least 20 goals per season is useless, considering the number of chances we create and calibre of opposition faced (remember this was prior to the death of ermmmmmm….Deadclub).

Considering Deadclub are no longer with us, should BBJ’s target now be higher than this?

    25?

    30?

  8. Cadizzy

Don’t look too much into friendlies. They will get out the group stage most likely. Possibly the quarters.

They aren’t good enough for much else. I do think their young players are promising Wilshere, Barkley, Sturridge all look great.

    25?

    30?

No, because a league without our main rivals means we can afford to rotate our squad more and rest or sub the guys who might break scoring records.

Anyway, who cares who scores the goals. What do we win if one of our players tops the SPFL Top Scorers list? It is a piece of fluff and deeply unimportant.

I don’t think England’s up and at ’em style will suit the heat of a Brazilian summer.

I think that unless a player shows Messi like qualities from 17/18 we should take his age into account in terms of expectations of his development timescale.

Some players do not physically mature until early twenties.

I remember watching Craig Bryson at EK Thistle in 2003/4 when he would be 18 and you could see signs then he would be a senior player, but it has taken him well into his twenties to develop to the top level.

Good to see him get a Scotland start.

  14. Auldheid,

It would be interesting to see the reply from Uefa, although that might take some digging,if I remember correctly from the audio that Charlotte posted, Green spoke to the guy from the ECA and made it worth his while to say that there was a continuation of the oldco to the newco.

I would be astonished if Uefa were actually consulted by the ASA and maybe it was the ECA that they got the information from and because its from a European body they ran with it.

If the treatment of Derry City is anything to go by then I think that Uefa would not condone the shennanigans that went on at Ibrox, this decision must be looked at.

That ruling doesn’t sit right and also the SFA cheif executive was at pains to state that the newco/oldco/history debate was a matter of personal opinion ,if that is the case then when did the SFA change its stance.
