Amsterdam to Astana

Do you remember who we played this round last season, Helsinki or Helsingborg?  The ones you win often blend into the background noise.  Not so in 2007.  The defeat of Spartak Moscow on penalty kicks will live long in the memory.

The last Champions League qualifying round reversal was THAT game eight years ago.  Gordon Strachan was sill unpacking his white tee shirts when the team collapsed in Bratislava.  A historic recovery was on the cards a week later when Celtic took a 4-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining but it wasn’t to be.

Before that MTK Budapest were humbled 0-4 at home by the Sevillians making the return leg a formality, not that the Sevillians were masters at Champions League qualification.  Basel knocked them out the previous season on away goals, paving the way for that memorable season in the Uefa Cup.

Which brings us to Ajax.  If you are my age, winning 1-3 in the Ajax Arena was something of a landmark in your life.  We were back at the top table. We were also pretty shocked at that fact.

It was Helsingborg in the final qualifying round last season.  Let’s hope Shakhter Karaganda fade from memory quickly as an inconsequential stop along the way.

Get tore into them, Celtic.

CELTIC take on Shakhter Karagandy today in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League play-off in the Astana Arena.

And due to restrictions on alcohol promotion in Kazakhtan, the Celtic shirts will carry the logo of ´Tipperary Natural Mineral Water´ rather than main shirt sponsor, Magners.

Tipperary Natural Mineral Water is owned by C&C Group, owners of Magners Cider.

If the team were playing this afternoon like to play route one football I would play Mulgrew & lustig at fullback.

Izzy would be too easy a target for opposition.

Winning at Ajax was a great night.

It was also a rare occasion when I was able to attend a game with Awe Naw, which made it all the better. On the way there, we were stopped by the Dutch police. Being Feyenoord supporters, they wished us well. Wim Jansen went in the same turnstile as us.

Eight years since THAT game? Time flies when your having fun!

    Here we go!

Going to get a bit ahead of myself here, but this is what I want IF ( and I think we will ) we beat Karagandy in this play-off.

I want Real Madrid in the group. I remember sitting with my Dad in the main stand in 1980 when we beat them 2-0 and it was magical. It is long overdue that we play them in a competitive match again.

Click on the link to see the goals and listen to the noise. God bless Johnny Doyle, the man who loved the Green.

    Very happy memories.

  13. The only game I’ve been in in Amsterdam was when Ajax stuffed us 3-0 in 1971. We held our own for an hour, but ultimately we were chasing shadows.

I remember that just before the return game, the bold Johann floated the idea of signing for Celtic – paper talk, he was probably negotiating a new contract. He eventually went to Barcelona, the rest was history. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4T30vJJpAU
