And they came in huge numbers to buy season tickets

546

Ticket officeThis morning’s images of a chain of people snaking around the Celtic Park ticket office and out towards London Road is remarkable. Even more so when you consider more people were buying season tickets online than queueing from the small hours to make sure they can support Celtic next season.

Frankly, I didn’t think we’d see sights like this until we saw a change in playing environment.

Season ticket sales, together with recent commercial deals concluded with Dafabet and Magners, puts the club on an enormously better financial footing, but the benefits extend beyond what we see today. Peripheral income, such as match day spent at the superstore and at kiosks, will have a corresponding lift.

Now if we get Champions League income on top of this………….

It makes sense to keep an number of seats for individual matches. It’s a lot easier to convert a casual supporter into a ST holder than it is to sell to somebody that’s never been before.

When I was younger I always heard stories about waiting lists. Be interesting to see how many we’ve sold. Must be 50k plus s of today.

Good luck to anyone trying to get one, at least the sun is hiding for a while.

I got mine in FS2. Great seats.

Although the Leicester match is at Celtic Park my understanding is that it is not Celtic that are hosting the match (it is the Tournament organisers)…so I dont expect it to be on the Season book.

Have also heard that it is a 5.30pm kick off and that it is on Sky.

    Season ticket numbers…

For many years we maintanied around 53,000 deason tickets, stretching from the completion of the stadium through to the WGS years.

In WGS’s final year, on the back of 3 in a row Champsionships and successive Champions League last 16s, we hit a high mark of 54,252. It’s a curious thing that WGS’ brand of football was considered somewhat less than cerebral yet he delivered the crowds.

The Willo Flood window was the first of the expensive circumstances, which when added to WGS’ team’s failure to get over the line in the league, cost 4000 season tickets. A self-inflicted calamity compounded by the start of the economic crash.

The economic crash of 2009/10 (when it’s impact was at its height), not helped by Tony Mowbray’s brief chin-taking, was the biggest hit, costing 6,000 season tickets at a stroke, of which about half were the supporters who travelled from Ireland in so many numbers.

In the wake of this – appaling economics and dreadful football – season 2010/11, Lenny’s first, saw season ticket sales drop to 44,975, a full 10,000 fewer than just 2 seasons previously.

The demise of Rangers the following season was reflected in a further loss of 3,000 season ticket holders, with a total of 41,716 tickets sold. Of course not all of this shortfall can be bracketed as “Old Firmism”, but my sense is the majority is.

A marketing and discount effort by the club saw numbers recover to 43,000 during Lenny’s final year, but fell back again in Ronny’s first to 40,472. We’ll see in due course what Ronny’s second season delivered in terms of season tickets, but it’s fair to say that his tenure coincided with the lowest number of season tickets sold since the Hampden season 20 years previously.

Inevitably, those looking for evidence to back a point of view – or a media narrative – will be delighted to see so many former season ticket holders coming back to the club. Until they see the impact of the financial muscle on the pitch, that is.

However, a reasonable review of season tickets sales will show disaffection at the end of WGS’ final season as being the start of the trend of reduced sales, followed by the huge and lasting impact of the long recession, the diminishing football performance under BTM and Lenny (initially), and then the impact of an absent Rangers FC, and Celtic’s “just enough” policy in that period.

The economy has largely recovered, Celtic has a new, popularly acclaimed manager, and the club is set to invest. Some clever boxing just now will see season ticket bounce back strongly, as anecdotal evidence suggests.

I doubt we’ll get to the 54,000 of 2008/09, but an additional 10,000 supporters will at least bring the number back to around the 50,000 mark. At a maximum, I’d say around 3000 folk were back at Celtic Park for the worst of reasons. The rest are enthused, optimistic and back in work.

    For what it’s worth.

My position on PL – the best CEO in the UK – but for balance I do not believe he is the best scout, talent spotter, manager or anything else he decides he wants to be in charge of – I am hopeful Brendan has the control of all football related matters

    ______

This is often stated as fact and it’s not the case.

Peter Lawwell does not sign players and he never has. The manager has always had the final say on players and Lawwell’s involvement is related to negotiating deals.

Yes we want to beat them, yes we want to mock them, yes we want to remind them of their cheating and tax criminality, however anyone who says, Brendan notwithstanding, that the ‘Rangers’ promotion to the Premiership has nothing to do with these high Season Ticket sales, is being disingenious.

Would Brendan have taken the job without ‘them’ in the league? – It is a moot point.

There is no doubt an adversary that can attract large numbers of supporters and help generate huge TV audiences and raise our profile is a contributory factor.

We maybe don’t need Sevco, but it certainly helps OUR cause. We maybe dislike certain teams, but it certainly helps to hate one team with a vengeance.

We have beat and outlived the old bassas, now we use the new bassas.

    Superb factually based post .

I’m surprised by the extent of the anecdotal Brendan factor, in fact I thought we might have been holed under the waterline from Mogga through Deila, and our numbers of money up frontists.

But it seems Celtic fans might not have found other things to do, just yet, not forgetting safe standing or rail seating, as Celtic call it, then Res 12, Celtic are on indeed on the up.

    As ever.

  12. Max season ticket allocation will ceiling out at 52K, according to the Celtic ticket office. By the end of the week I’m sure we will be close.

If your so positive about your point of view, you’ll have no problem answering two question,

Who completes the negotiations on behalf of the club ?

Does that position not have the power and final say on who is signed ?

  20. When our Supporters Club was started 200/01 we were initially on a waiting list for Season Books and when we got some they didn’t include the Hun games. After a year or so we did get them upgraded to Full Season Books.

  21. Kev

Yip. That’s the next bit and I hope Celtic fans recognise Brendan’s terms and conditions include a heavy doze of the reality factor, which is still a sponsorless TV’less wasteland.

New improved season ticket revenue won’t move us from Ciftci to Sutton, or Hartson, that’ll take a change in strategy that we don’t know is in place yet, after years of shopping in a very poor market.

The fans are buying in to the Celtic dream again, and there’s a daisy chain of mediocre players ready to egress down the Celtic Way onto London Rd then turn right or left.

  23. The big question is what will the fixture computer randomly” come up with for the new season? I’m hoping our long standing Glasgow Derby at New Year with Partick Thistle continues.

What’s the odds on the new club being given two home games against us? They can’t guarantee making the top six and securing a fourth game against the champions after all.

Anyone think the Championship will get any Tv coverage this season? And what about Edinburgh City? Will all of their games be televised like the last new club to join the lower leagues?

  26. I’ve been watching a lot of the Copa America games, and some of the talent on show is fantastic.

You can see why Portuguese teams are so succesful, riding on the backs of their South American imports.

Would love to see some of these players in the Hoops, and would surely cost a fraction of the price tags in the European market?
