Members of a European Parliament inquiry have accused Fifa and Uefa officials of being “enablers” of a corrupt system that permits players and agents to avoid paying tax, with Barcelona’s social media campaign after Lionel Messi’s conviction for tax fraud described by one MEP as “immoral”.

Part of the European Parliament’s committee of inquiry into money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion (Pana), the hearing has been prompted by some of the accusations detailed by the website Football Leaks, which has alleged that various players and managers have hidden tens of millions of euros in tax havens around the world.

The first hearing took place in Brussels on Tuesday with representatives of both the world and European football governing bodies in attendance. They were questioned by a series of MEPs, with a particular focus on Messi’s conviction for evading more than €4m in tax over his image rights by using shell companies in Belize and Uruguay.

Last July, the Argentina forward and his father Jorge were sentenced to 21 months in prison after being found guilty, with Barcelona subsequently launching a social media campaign with the hashtag #WeAreAllLeoMessi.

“Messi was guilty and he was sanctioned,” said Belgium’s Louis Michel. “This campaign is immoral and contradicts the values promoted by Fifa.”

The German MEP Jeppe Kofod also questioned Kimberly Morris, who is Fifa’s head of global transfers and compliance. “You are for fair play,” he said. “Shouldn’t you also be for fair taxes?”

In response Morris said: “It’s a matter for national legislation. Our competencies are limited. We do what is in our power to investigate the sports aspects.”

The Pana committee chairman, Werner Langer, described the answers as “not completely satisfactory”, with Michel accusing the Fifa official of displaying “a magnificent example of double talk”. He said: “These people are totally against the values you say you defend.”

The panel also heard from Merijn Rengers, a journalist for the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad, which is one of the publications in the media consortium which published the findings of financial wrongdoing via the Football Leaks website. Rengers said the desire to evade tax was “epidemic” in the industry, with some of the biggest clubs, agents and players particularly culpable.

“Everybody is using tax advisors to evade tax,” he said, while also raising concerns over the lack of transparency in third-party ownership. “We believe tax evasion is a clear threat to the social values of football and to the regulatory framework and to the integrity of the broader game. Having said that, it’s up to the regulatory authorities.”

But Gregor Reiter of the European Football Agents Association admitted that sanctions have been hard to implement due to different rules being adopted around the continent.

“The federation sees the legislation for players’ agents solely as a framework that member states must adapt,” he said. “That leads to diverging rules depending on the country, which makes it very difficult to take legal action against bad practices.”

The investigation will submit its final report before the end of this ye

  12. Funny how I and many others enjoy being a Celtic SUPPORTER….The clue is in the word ” SUPPORTER”….You cease to become a “SUPPORTER” when you fail to “SUPPORT” the Celts whenever they are not performing to their best in parts of some games..

Young team, STILL learning with lots more to come….these Bhoys deserve ENCOURAGEMENT and wait a minute whats that other word ?………..Oh yes….” SUPPORT”

Ive stood/sat at Celtic Park for decades, and heard at 1st hand some so called Celtic “Supporters” giving it out big time to certain players whenever they make a mistake etc….and yet when ever those same players do something very well…those same Celtic “Supporters” all of a sudden become very Muted….Funny that ?

Re my post earlier this morning..Celtic players made mistakes against the Huns last Saturday. When winning ONLY 2 -0..I don’t recall the same negative comments as what happened on here last night after beating the Huns…?

  13. Bitter blow as Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong could miss Scotland’s crucial World Cup qualifiers

The midfielder was an unused sub in the Hoops’ victory over Anderlecht but has picked up a calf problem while Scott Brown also limped off in Belgium.

    …………………………………………

Are there to be at least TWO Scotland call offs ( not forgetting Tony Ralston) from Celtic players……with four more to come..I certainly hope so !

Will Strachan now turn to Calmac to bale him out ?

how do you get a calf problem sitting on a bench ?

Brendan Rodgers last night hailed his Champions League glory Bhoys and insisted the best has yet to come.

Celtic swept aside Anderlecht for their first group stage win on the road in five years and their first clean sheet away from home at the sharpest end of UEFA competition.

Leigh Griffiths, Patrick Roberts and Scott Sinclair struck as the Scottish champions took a huge step towards European participation beyond Christmas.

And Celtic now face a double-header with Bayern Munich, who were thumped 3-0 at PSG last night, as they gave themselves the chance to dream of finishing runners-up in Group B.

Anderlecht 0 Celtic 3 as Brendan Rodgers guides Hoops to HUGE Champions League win in Belgium

The only downside on a night of success was a hamstring injury for Scotland skipper Scott Brown ahead of the World Cup qualifiers with Slovakia and Slovenia.

That will be assessed in the next 24 hours while fellow Hoops star Stuart Armstrong is also a doubt after sitting out last night’s game on the bench with a calf strain.

Rodgers said: “It was an outstanding performance and result. It was a real pressure game for us.

“It was a brilliant team performance. There are still areas to improve but they were exceptional.

“The first two goals came from pressing the game and you saw the fitness of the team at the third goal when we had five players in box.

Celtic players rated: Who is the Hoops star man on glory night against Anderlecht?

“For a Scottish team to come away, win 3-0 and keep a clean sheet at this level is obviously a big achievement.”

“It shows the development of the squad in the last year or so. There is a long way to go in the group. PSG won 3-0 tonight so maybe our 5-0 wasn’t so bad.

“We will reflect on the game but I believe we can be better than we were tonight. The players deserve huge credit on the back of such a high intensity game at the weekend. They deserve all the plaudits they get.”

Celtic hadn’t won on the road in the group stage since a 3-2 win at Spartak Moscow in 2012.

Before last night, it was their only win in 27 attempts away from Celtic Park and the Hoops had also gone 10 group stage games without victory.

Rodgers said: “Progress is what you are looking for as a coach, if you look at our last three away fixtures in this competition.

    ………………………………..

i wonder if Brendan used the word ” Progress” deliberately ?….I would like to think so.

    LOL

  20. I thought Nir Bittonbauer did a fantastic job coming on for Scott Brown and playing out of position…

“In the cold light of day my opinion on last night’s game has not changed and my feelings of absolute delight at us winning 3-0 away in a Champions League group gave have not been diluted one iota by sleep.”

At least you got some sleep. I was so buzzed last night that I am a wee bit sleep deprived this morning. The delight in the result will see me float through the day. I may be deprived of the privilege of digging up any lurking Anderlechtians at my work, wo those that were supporting them, by proxy, will just have to do.

    Big Jimmy

I share your general sentiments about supporting IN THE FLESH but there is no adverse effect on the team, though there might be on your own mood, by “negative” thoughts or expressions while watching on TV teams that are playing away. None of last night’s players were reading their half-time reviews in the dressing room; they were busy sorting themselves out to have a much better second half. For me, there is absolutely no dichotomy involved in winning well whilst not playing consistently at your best. In fact, I much prefer that to playing well and messing up the result, which is always a problem when we move to this level.

At the risk of upsetting you even further, I will look forward to the Celtic By Numbers analysis, if he can differentiate the possession stats by making a distinction between unpressed passes amongst our back 6 players, and the rest of our more hard won passing. There were signs last night that the new Anderlecht coach had not done his homework fully on us. Simple things like the ease with which Craig Gordon was able to play his favoured clearance chip to Mikel Lustig on hte right touchline, to the acres of space afforded Kieran Tierney who was in the mood to really hurt them. He seemed to me to have a very simple game plan- Don’t press the Celtic back line (until you go behind) and double up on Roberts and Sinclair. Brendan and the coaching team were able to use the space afforded to Lustig, Tierney and N’tcham (once he found his feet) to hurt them badly.

I remain, at least as delighted as you by the result and I have renewed hope about the very difficult Bayern challenge ahead. Imagine!- I am being positive about a tie against a team who were one of the top 4 favourites to win this outright before a ball was kicked.

  22. A lot of pant wetting because of purported negative comments…away and gies peace!…everyone is delighted with the result.

  23. I admit it…

I screamed at the telly as Celtic messed up simple passes under little pressure.

    I admit it….

I kicked the table as patient possession play was spoiled by an inexplicable boot up the park…

    I admit it….

I fumed silently as clear scoring opportunities were messed up by poor decision making

    I admit it….

    I know nothing!!!!

    Fortunately BR knows loads….

    Such happy hoopy days. :-)

  24. Back tae auld claithes and porridge at the weekend.

That game is a banana skin waiting to happen so far as the unbeaten run is concerned.

  25. Another wee bonus although it doesn’t matter to we Celts too much…

All over the country last night Huns were RIPPING UP their Bookie lines on last nights 90 minutes, and also those Huns who backed ante post that Celtic would only win maybe 1 point or zero points in our Group ?

I feckin love it when the Huns hurt even more…..

    HaHaHa.

  26. BIG JIMMY

I’m not a hun, by your thinking (not mine) I’ve done enough time watching celtic away in Europe to have a valid opinion on last nights game. I was there last time we played in Brussels

In my opinion it was a horrible game of football, anderlecht were shockingly poor, and I won’t get carried away and think this shows any great signs of improvement. Doesn’t stop me from enjoying the result and the three points
