Ange Postecoglou will receive a hero’s welcome anytime he returns to Celtic Park, he may even be back one day in an official capacity, but none of them get everything right. Alexandro Bernabei is a case in point.
Left backs are the rarest assets in football. Unlike most other positions, managers strongly prefer them to be left footed, meaning they are drawn from 10% of the population. More latitude is given to wingers and central defenders, but at full back you need your strongest foot on the outside.
This means there is always a shortage of left backs. In the summer of 2022 Ange was a year into his stay at Celtic and looking for backup to Greg Taylor (a recurring theme). He was presented with a priority list which placed Alexandro as fourth choice, without much enthusiasm.
Ange had what looked like the Midas Touch in the transfer market. The previous seasons he plucked Hatate, Maeda and Kyogo from obscurity and fancied he could do the same with Alexandro. Celtic overpaid for a player only one person really fancied.
The player has apparently done enough in a few months in Brazil to justify a permanent deal. At 24, he needs to find his level and play most weeks. As one of those rare left backs, that should be possible. For me, he was really a winger who was probably moved back years before hitting the professional game, all because his then manager could not find a left back.

Work o’clock so soon?
Happy Monday from Kentucky all.

Happy Monday2
For me, Bernebei comes into the category of ‘didn’t see enough of him to know for sure if he might have made it’ .
If it’s a fact that he was fourth choice , that doesn’t fill me with confidence though . Glad his career is picking up in Brazil if it means we get some money back on him .
Agreed, he simply wasnt a left back, looked decent further up the park
The period of the Ange reign saw us spend around 50mullion on 29 new signings (says 67hailhail).
Some were his choices, others the targets and work of the finely honed recruitment machine we’d learned was in place…
But aside from Berni, Ange realistically had his dibs all over the signings of: Kobayashi, Ideguchi, Iwata, Haksa, Mooy, Giakoumakis, Aj, Daizen, Reo and Kyogo: a circa 60% decent strike rate?
The recruitment gurus prob spotted Josh Clarke, Lawal, Abildgaard, Urhogide, Shaw, Dawson, Siegrist, Kenny, Oh, Joe Hart, Starfelt, Scalesy, Jura, Liel, Jota and CCV. A 70% strike rate !
Berni’s early scrape with the booze and the cops was an incident he never seemed to recover from; you won’t get they shenanigans from our current Camp Nou new man (fingers crossed).
Personally, I think the one that got away was Moritz Jenz who never really got the chance to embed and never did too much wrong when given a shot.
The wee fellas last game was against Killie at home where we were winning 1-0 going into injury time , yer man went walkabout in the opposition half , he got back in time to run under a cross ball to the back stick , where the Killie forwarded nodded in.
At the match it looked as AB had been pushed in the back but Sportscene indicated he just didn’t defend properly, he will never be seen again in a Celtic shirt.
Fair to say the wee fella doesn’t have a defensive bone in his body.
HH
I would be more than surprised if Ange Postecoglu had ever heard of Bernabei, even in the remotest sense. Doubt if any Celtic supporter ever had. (hadnt heard of Izaguerre but he was a terrific left back) No mention of the three players preferred before him on the “priority list”. Mmmm But at least he kicked with the right foot which in this case was the left one. Rather than blame Ange I would ask who put wee Alex on the list in the first place and ban them sine die from ever scouting for the Bhoys, while we missed out on Andy Robertson and Aaron Hickey both staring us in the face. More sine die bans needed.
I don’t know about Bernabei, but Kieran Tierney spent much of his youth development as a left winger before being shifted backwards. Having played against him umpteen times, my now 27 year old son still carries the mental scars 😂

Thanks for posting this – only one facet of the club, but it says so much about Celtic.
Darwin- I would like to see a role for Bernard Ponsonby at the Club, he has experience in the media world we could use,and he wouldn’t take nonsense from anyone.
Jonny Hayes was a left back once….but his schoolboy manager switched him to play up front

He would be a first class addition. I don’t know who is our media guru on the board but Bernard could do the job. HH
Darwin- his eulogy to Big Billy was fantastic, straight from the heart
That professional footballers have spent many many years being “coached” and yet are unable to use their left foot is an indictment on the modern game. England had to play a right back at left back last night due to a dearth of two footed players. There is simply no excuse for players not being two footed, you learn, you practice and over time you become proficient, expert even, with both feet. (The full size ball does not help) Even good players, like CalMac and Phil Foden are so one footed they have to take the long way round in order to control and pass the ball. Truly top class players like Bobby Charlton, Bobby Murdoch, Jimmy Johnstone and George Best all practised with their “weaker” foot, and were all comfortably two footed. Failing which you are half the player you could have been.
The only Scottish player to score in 2 European Cup Final’s was signed as a right footed centre half.
I don’t think being a right footed left back is as much of a disadvantage in Anges teams and maybe yo a lesser degree Brendan’s , the inverted position you take up when you’re attacking means you’ll be looking to receive the ball and pass on both feet instead of looking to go outside or pass infield or down the line from a wide position. Jura didn’t look uncomfortable doing it and Jed Spence who’s a right footed right back has done well at spurs recently. If Greg had more of a right foot I reckon he’d have had a few goals this season from good shooting positions.
Likewise defensively I think a really high press means full backs don’t find themselves one in one as often as with more traditional defensive systems when you need your full back to have a stronger left or right side to stop the winger from going past you on the outside.
I can’t remember a Celtic defender being so casual with the ball as AB. He just never seemed to appreciate the pressure that giving the ball away in the left back area put on the team. He seemed to have talent but not a defenders mentality. Maybe it’s a cultural thing and he’ll find his place in Brazil but he never looked like learning how to play in a European league

Big Billy was easy to love – I know Jinky is the official GOAT, but for me it was always Cesar. When he lifted the EC above his head that night in Lisbon you could see his heart almost beating out of his chest. In my opinion the greatest Celtic picture of all time.HH
Can you help ?
I’m looking for 2 tickets for the Liepzig match .

Agree!
Was it Murdo MacLeod who said when young he wore a sand-shoe on his right foot to force him to kick the ball with his football booted left foot? por cierto

You are right about the foundation dinner in London and about BP.
Re the former there is huge credit should be given to Martin and Phillip Brown for their work on developing this idea and building its momentum.
The NY event has built on the concept so well.
The london venue is perfect for such an intimate but fun event. I don’t think either of the Brown lads ever look for or get the appreciation they deserve.
good luck to bernabei
Interesting listening to the new ROI head coach Heimir Grimillson comments on Liam Scales and his selection in the team for the last couple of International games, he regards Liam as a winner and likes to pick a guy who’s uesd to success at club level.
The Wicklow man played well in the recent games scoring against Icelanders and was the pick of the central defenders. Cameron unfortunately is becoming something of a sick note, I hope not, and Liam has become the senior man trying to nursemaid contantly new defensive partners. At 25 years of age Liam has made great progress under the guidance of Brendan and John Kennedy two of the best in the game and defenders reach their peak usually at 28 to 30 years of age.

………..
Could you show one interview were Ponsonby demonstrated that he was a thorn in the krankie establishments arse, and not an ass licking propagandist gatekeeper for the wee tyrant establishment in what’s left of Scotland?
How about a guy, Mr George Galloway, whom BP strangely didn`t interview, which was his job afterall, even after Mr GG had 4 death threats, one of them by a guy who got jailed as he was boasting about having access to live ammunition during Scottish election of 2021, which was rigged to keep both Mr GG and Alex Salmond out of the krankie controlled Scottish Parliament, and STV`s main political anchor didn`t say a single word about it just like the rest of the ScotGuv controlled local fake media outlets.
Who needs bought and paid for puppet stoogies like that?
BP and the rest of the nat controlled local media deserved the Sly News Sam Coates treatment which was deliciously served to the Sky pretentious prk, by the unbeatable Mr GG, unless elections are rigged to keep him out as happened to all WPB candidates in UK GE 2024 which BP never noticed either.
Here`s how you turn the tables on the fake news media by bombing them with facts that they don`t want Joe public to know about. 👇️

BP was a propagandist gatekeeper for the evil Timmy hating, and jailing, and smearing, bigoted, woke, rainbow car park painting, anti-Catholic nats.
BP would be a Gerry McCulloch type of PLC pro Old Firm, puppet, stooge, covering for the balance sheet, and the glib project buses business plan which helps the PLC elites get even richer as the daft Huns have been in 2 European finals since “The Slow Lane” Lawwell piss take began in 2004 etc.
