Ange’ hunch on Bernabei

75

Ange Postecoglou will receive a hero’s welcome anytime he returns to Celtic Park, he may even be back one day in an official capacity, but none of them get everything right.  Alexandro Bernabei is a case in point.

Left backs are the rarest assets in football.  Unlike most other positions, managers strongly prefer them to be left footed, meaning they are drawn from 10% of the population.  More latitude is given to wingers and central defenders, but at full back you need your strongest foot on the outside.

This means there is always a shortage of left backs.  In the summer of 2022 Ange was a year into his stay at Celtic and looking for backup to Greg Taylor (a recurring theme).  He was presented with a priority list which placed Alexandro as fourth choice, without much enthusiasm.

Ange had what looked like the Midas Touch in the transfer market.  The previous seasons he plucked Hatate, Maeda and Kyogo from obscurity and fancied he could do the same with Alexandro.  Celtic overpaid for a player only one person really fancied.

The player has apparently done enough in a few months in Brazil to justify a permanent deal.  At 24, he needs to find his level and play most weeks.  As one of those rare left backs, that should be possible.  For me, he was really a winger who was probably moved back years before hitting the professional game, all because his then manager could not find a left back.

Regarding using your weaker foot – I was really interested in this article I read years ago.

Often wondered how innovative we were with our players.

Time will tell if our recent transfer activity is a success or not.

But it certainly appears to be more focused and aggressive than before.

With no evidence whatsoever I suspect that is due to a greater alignment to the managers wishes.

If he thinks you won’t cut it at Celtic … off you trot with no long goodbyes.

Brendan doesn’t want you hanging around stinking up the joint.

Next two windows will be interesting.

    SPOT THE DIFFERENCE:

At the start of the Celtic Way there is a statue of King Billy, arms raised and appears to be holding something aloft. (A cup)?

Over at AyeBrokes there is a statue of “The Cardigan” also with arms raised aloft but there seems to be something missing?

Could someone get these to photos posted together on here and play “Spot The Difference”

I cannot tell, but seeing them together may help me

We’ve only got 22 outfield players in the squad at the moment, and Kwon, Lagerbielke, Bernabei and Tilio on loan. I think the increased number of European games, which will include four qualifiers next season make a smaller squad than we gave a good idea

I can understand Brendan wanting to make our squad smaller, although in terms of net squad size and our own players leaving the club we only lost two wingers in Mikey and Haksabanovic in the Summer. But it’s imperative that we continue to sign and bring through players we can, to put it bluntly make money on, and not just one per season. We need a squad that’s big enough to have players that are early in their career and can get better with Brendan coaching them in the Celtic environment

It’s early yet but the Summer window doesn’t look to have improved the first team much if at all. If we really are to be aggressive and targeted any outs need to be replaced with starters and development players who can become Matt O’Rileys.

  14. Should read: I don’t think the increased number of European games, which will include four qualifiers next season make a smaller squad than we gave a good idea

    Turkeybhoy,

On reading back last night I realised the juxtaposition of my post immediately after yours.

I want to assure you that was no comment on your post – it was a reference to the boring repetition of having to log-in.

And I agree – you can always rely on the Hun to bring a smile to your face in terms of their daily insanity.

  16. It’s not really Brendan’s M.O. to be aggressive in the transfer market. In the past he has preferred to keep his better players, even when they want to leave, he’s pretty conservative with his signings, even this Summer he hedged the risk of signing a development player by spending £11m on one, he spent £9m on a striker we know all about. £6m on an experienced centre half who was very much a known player.

If we are to make the step change to being a really competitive team in the CL I think Angie was right, we need to be more aggressive, sell players at the right time and take some real risks with signings, even though it will mean seeing more failures in the hoops than successes.

The Summer window has given us a squad with more depth, we now need to do some serious thinking about signing individuals.

  17. Don’t know if this is correct, but I’m sure Charlie Nic, wore a boot on his left foot and a slipper on his good foot to encourage him to use his left. Could be rubbish of course.

  18. And think about where we’re shopping.

There’s no value in England unless you drop down to division 1 where the Prem teams don’t do much scouting.

£15m gets you Dara O’Shea, relegated from the EPL with Burnley, same age, same experience as Trusty, and not as good in the recent games as Liam Scales.
