Ange reframing challenges

137

You forget the ones you win so quickly.   Details from the 6-0 disposal of KR Reykjavik, only a year ago are difficult to recall, not so Ferencvaros in the next round.  One year earlier, it was Cluj who scored four at Celtic Park to eliminate us from the Champions League, details of that night are forever etched in your memory.

Vasilis Barkas made his Celtic Park debut with a successful AEK Athens side in 2018.  AEK were not world-beaters but were the best team to knock us out of Champions League qualifiers over the last decade.

Having won a reprieve from a 6-1 aggregate defeat to Legia Warsaw, Ronny Deila had Champions League qualification in his hands after dominating in a draw away to Maribor, but the loss of a late goal at home was a portent for his time at the club.  The next season’s elimination to Malmo was even more painful.  Ferencvaros, Cluj, Maribor and Malmo is a tale of what could and should have been.

Even with our fragilities, Celtic are a better side than Midtjylland.  I doubt they have a single player who interested Ange Postecoglou as a signing target.

Did you notice how Ange reframed challenges as opportunities?  “You can always grasp for excuses and reasons why you can’t do something, but there’s an opportunity to do something special and it falls on the players who are available. There’s no reason why they can’t take that.”

I like this type of thinking, it inspires people to aim ever higher.  Pick up the challenge, Celtic, and we can consign Midtjylland to distant memory, along with Riga and Kalju Nomme.

The article assumes they’ll improve on last season, when they went undefeated in the league. The season after our invincible 2016/2017 wasn’t our best in the league – we only finished with 5 points more than we did the season just gone.

I think I they’ll struggle with the higher expectations, and a few gubbings in the cL won’t help

I didn’t, I addressed his exact point precisely.

Knowing how these things generally play out, I think you’ve put your own interpretation on it.

  11. We spent enough money to have a decent team, all we needed was…………………DOF…good recruitment……..good coaching.

I have probably left out some other structural problems but you get the gist.

Why do we bother playing football games? Why do we put ourselves through the trouble and expense of buying season tickets and travelling to stadia?

Why don’t we calculate each team’s finances and award a 3-0 victory to the team with the higher budget? We can all stay at home or the pub as the financial scores come in.

That way there will be no more small budgets beating bigger budgets. No more Celtic 2 Inter Milan 1 or Celtic 2 Barcelona 1.

No more Celtic supporters complaining about Celtic losing to teams with smaller budgets. After all, it’s just not football is it?

    Sorted.

  13. Due tae the Olympics lots of shows on tele pre-empted right now, I like pretty much all sports but due tae Covid I was quite off these games this time round.

As a result of this I jumped on and off CQN but as I’ve said recently it really is hard work. Same old same old usual suspects who somehow contrive tae answer each other’s post then when challenged on their Tim credentials tell us they have supported the bhoys since nineteen canteen and the latest is those who disagree with them were probably board supporters back in ’94.

BTW now that the 5 way agreement has once again being used as a lambeg rod tae beat us up with, yes Eric Reilly was on the SFA Board but he just happened tae be out of town when the decision was made. A shower of durty sleekit lying bassas and I don’t just mean some posters on here.

Anyway back tae the Olympics I decided tae watch the swimming as a “wee” Canadian lassie was going for a record 6 medals in the summer games.

Well she got the bronze coming fae the back, an Ozzie lassie won the gold, but the big surprise for me was the silver medalist. Siobhan Bernadette Haughey, my first thought was I didnae know Ireland had a swimming team over there, that is until I found out she was competing for Hong Kong lol.

  14. All to play for tonight — my thoughts are that we are 55% favourites.

Consequently tough gig but we have what it to beat them.

Hoping LA delivers in spades — he has more than a goal in him.

OE needs to turn up tonight — he will soon be away and he owes us a performance.

Time for GT to step up and take the lead.

He will be the most experienced player in the back 4 but recent performances suggest he is not aware of this fact — he really needs to put in a shift and show some leadership.

AR is currently 70% not bad / 30% shocking — so the standard is there just a case when he has to think about it he looks lost.

SW + DM — Best of luck.

They will not fail / they will do their best and PL and NL should hang their heads in shame.

If IS / DT / CMcG deliver a performance it will be some game.

Add in RC repaying us for 9 months of stodge / self indulgence and we will have a good chance.

The Danish mob would struggle to come 5th in the SPL this season.

On the slide with a very lumpy squad who are trying to stabilise after significant change.

Some good players but not a great team — game in Oct would be a skoosh for us.

Unfortunately we are not yet into Aug.

No matter we should win — MIB lottery permitting.

  15. A non topical post.

Does anyone know if Peter Lawwell travelled with the squad ? Is he fit to play ?

  16. Interesting that the board groupies and PL cap doffers are still trying to put up a fight regarding the current situation with the club and our somewhat patchy squad.

PL must have a big extended family / buy loads of drinks in his local pub to get this level of support — either that or the St Als mafia are calling in a few favours.

Interesting that so many who allude to extensive business experience find that the club is well run and a paragon of corporate governance and fan engagement — you have to ask what experience this would be to find out how/why they think we have been well run in the recent past?

You have to wonder if today’s mess does not indicate a significant corporate failure over many years — what would?

Here’s hoping that AP and DMcK can get things moving.

    SAINTSTIVS and FRITZSONG

    Greetings:

A couple of days ago, SAINT posted ( as is his wont of an evening ) an intriguing photo from 1988 of Souness with an affectionate hand on the shoulder of a somewhat portly Jinky, clad in a Morton strip.

It reminded me that a few years earlier, I had played a few games alongside the great man at Helenvale, and that somewhere I had a xerox copy of an Evening Times photo taken after one of the games. The conversation today will largely be about Midtjylland, so I will keep this brief.

Sometime around 1981/82, I was asked to turn out for a team called Top Gear, a team of SDA employees run by a mate called Des Bonnar. In our first two games, we lost to teams who had obvious ringers. One of them was ex Rangers and St. Johnstone Johnny Hamilton. Des, who had a volcanic personality, protested but to no avail. After the second defeat, Des said, “Right, I’m no havin’ this.”

When I turned up at Helenvale for the next game, I saw Des in the doorway checking names off. As kick off approached, I counted the players in the dressing room. We had 9, with Des making 10. I thought to myself, “Uh Oh, we are going to struggle with 10 men.” The Des appeared in the doorway with a broad grin on his face. “Lads, I’d like to introduce a new recruit, name of Jimmy Thomson.” Well, Des was 6 feet tall, and he blocking the doorway, so we couldn’t see who was behind him. Imagine how gobsmacked we were when Des dramatically stepped aside, and in walked Jinky! He sat next to me, said “Hello”, shook hands, and started getting ready. I remember bring amazed at the tremendous development of his quad and neck muscles.

We were playing a team of Glasgow lawyers, who squawked loud and long, but they had a nerve, as they had at least two ringers that I recognized, having played with one and against the other. They were not professionals or juniors, but were first class amateurs from Croftfoot and Cambria. Both were exceptionally fast defenders, and the Law team assigned both of them to mark Jinky, who played in central midfield for us. The ringers played Jimmy fairly, although he ran them ragged. Unfortunately, the real lawyers were not so scrupulous and subjected Jinky to some heavy and late tackles. They were not in the Ruben Ayala category, but it was sufficient to see Jinky limp off before halftime. Before that, he had sent me clear through on goal twice, and twice I made an arse of it. Did I get abuse? Not a bit of it. Jinky was always encouraging. “Dinna worry, it’ll come.”

Jinky was on the wagon at the time and didn’t come back to the pub with us. I ran him home. He was charming, funny, with absolutely no ego, or airs and graces.

These are some of the Celtic related memories I will carry to my grave. Others, which I will share on another day on here, were playing 5 a side with Harry Hood in the old Taylor Street gym in Townhead in 1966/67, and playing for and against the Lynch mob ( Andy, Simon and big Tam ) in Ayr on an annual basis from around 1985 to 1990. Lastly, I may be the only person on here who has been yelled at by an irate Davie Hay, and survived to tell the tale! I’ll save that for another day. Meantime, here is the link to Top Gear and Jinky.

Nothing wrong with counting beans — I was one myself back in the day.

You have probably parked yer erse in the products that I was looking after.

Great fun burying “bodies” where the Big 4 wouldn’t find them.

Saving the company’s reputation if you like.

Consequently I know a second rate property bean counter totally out of his depth when I see one.

He was happy to live in 1995 as long as his bonus was not affected.

Useless and clueless in equal measure.

When you named Turkeybhoy in your response, how does that not become personal?

When you group label “Board defenders” and “sycophantic lickspittles”, can the group you are targetting not take it personally?

If a group is labelled as CQN invading troll huns, do you not cross the road to personally take offence?

Is there any coherent logic in this position?

  26. I met Charlie Haughey while on my honeymoon – we were staying in a nice hotel in Co Kerry and it turns out he was in the next suite to ours……….it was our honeymoon so we’d splashed out.

He was getting on, and was very very frail but we exchanged a few words at breakfast – he was interested in how a Scotsman had pitched up in Co Kerry. The missus wouldn’t talk to him as her Da’ was a big Fine Gael member……..

The boul’ Charlie had secret service cover who vaguely shadowed him – but one night he left his tray outside the room – a Champagne bucket casually left among the remnants of what looked like a good bevvy………….anyhoo, much to the disgust of my missus, I half-inched it and it takes pride of place in our kitchen to this very day.

    Cheers Charlie!

  27. The Danes have already pin pointed set pieces as our Achilles heel (no surprises there) so it’s very important not to go to ground unnecessarily.

Welsh was hard done by to give away that free kick last week but it was a challenge he had absolutely no need to make.

    Calm heads are needed tonight.
