Angry statements, the lowest common denominator

442

Issuing an angry statement ahead of a big game is not a bad strategy.  Angry statements resonate with the lowest common denominator, who are often the ones most likely to cause custodians of the club aggravation.

It is a subliminal way to say “We are just like you, we share your hopes and frustrations.”  It is almost as though they anticipate a difficult time coming up soon.  Throw in the mandatory patronising phrase, like, “supporters who have repeatedly proven themselves to be the most loyal in the country” and you are sorted.

Football fans occupying areas further up the food chain, however, will roll their eyes when reading drivel like, “this decision, which beggars belief.”

What struck me most about Newco’s statement last night is that a chink of self-awareness seemed to be dawning, “clubs the length and breadth of the country….. benefitted financially from the presence of our fans.”

This reaches the heart of the matter.  Newco are profitable for every club they play.  They open their wallets and dump a caravan of cash wherever they go, which is good for P&Ls from Kilmarnock to Dingwall.  It’s just, Newco are not actually profitable.

The model works for everyone else, just not for a club who want more success on the field than their income can buy.  They are a cash cow.  But while they can do wonders for the profitability of smaller clubs, they are impotent when it comes to fixing their own profitability problems.

Don’t resent that smaller clubs get a boost when you visit, do what Celtic do – feel good that you can help the rest of the league.  Be generous in spirit and maybe others will reciprocate.

The solution is not to howl at the moon, adept at it, though Newco are, it is to bring spending into alignment with income.  Beat Hibernian at their own £5m football budget game and respect will follow.

Raffle to play in an 11-a-side game at Celtic Park

An incredible opportunity to play on the hallowed turf at Celtic Park around the end of the current season 2017-18, in Club sponsor Intelligent Car Leasing’s match.

You will be provided with complimentary Celtic kit and receive the full match-day experience including arrival through the front door, access to the dressing room and proudly walking down the tunnel to enter the famous field of play.

Both squads will be managed by a former Celtic player. The game will take place on 16 May, kick off 11:00. All monies raised will be donated to Celtic FC Foundation, a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (number SC024648).

To enter the raffle, make a minimum donation of £5 to the Foundation at this MyDonate page.  Then send your donation confirmation email to this address: celticquicknews@gmail.com

The opportunity to play on Celtic Park is just beyond words.  I did it a few years ago, the memories will live forever, as will the photographs.  The experience of preparing in the dressing room, as so many greats have done before, was fabulous.

You can enter for yourself, or gift the prize to someone you know aged 18 or over. Competition closes at 15:00 this Friday, 27th.

Good luck!

  1. Mahe the Madman on

I find myself increasingly shaking my head at this blog and to be precise the lead articles. Thats about 5 in a row i disagree with.

Over a week ago the host told us he wasnt interested about those that need to organise their travel arrangements.

Last week we were told its a bad idea to tell your boss the truth. Couldnt disagree more.

Call it as you see it and always speak your mind my wee Fionnuala will be told. My da certainly did, as did his. You knew exactly where he stood on an issue.

Served me well and if someone doesnt like the truth thats their problem.

After all if youve done nothing more than call it straight then how have you done something wrong?

If asked a question give the honest answer. Full stop.

I also think many employers would rather have the blunt truth than a diplomatic fudge.

Americans in general I think dont really do straight answers,,,and many have found my blunt straight to the point no BS ways rude. Thats their problem.

Where im from the fella who didnt talk a lot and gave you the honest answer whether you wanted to hear it or not was a fella that was admired and often sought out to settle an argument as we all realised he speaks the plain truth or what he thinks,,not what he thinks you should hear.

Its called straight talk and the world would be a better place if there was more of it.

The next article focussed on another teams new shirt sponsor,,,can we look at our own club please rather than someone elses and if/when our club is fine look at the general game and not one single club because they used to have a bank that gave them the money to win trophies.

Questions i would love answered about our own club include but are not limited to,,

Who decides our slogans,,,they are crap ?

Fix the away ticket scheme ?

In the event of a whitewash report how will the club respond ?

Can we have somewhere for visiting fans to eat and chill before the game ?

Are these parking restrictions going to affect the support and how will you help those who pay your wages ?

What is the long term goal of the club because spending 3 or 4 times as much as the nearest team is not a good long term strategy ?

Who decided the fans going to see a game against a 6 year old club are charged 49 quid each and why ?

Why does the boardroom not be freshened up with new members regularly and what plans are there for fresh blood and impeteus ?

Why were those who trashed our home allowed back?

What does Dermot actually want and whats the point of him having the biggest say ?

Has the manager actually spent his budget wisely because as far as i see it most of them dont start so why bring them as we didnt need squad members ?

Celtic tv sucks,,after all these years why?

Can we answer some of the attacks we seem to get daily from the various media ?

The social charter of the club has clearly failed considering after 130 odd years we are still fenian b$*&^*&ds so maybe a new approach at ending sectarianism in football is needed ?

Will we ever have fair refs? Or at least good refs?

I could go on and on.

Aint happy at all with what I see yet the majority view is never had it better.

I see a club that could easily die here,,never thought I would write those words.

This board have done well out of us, and have balanced the books and shown us a path to sustainability by either entering the Champs league or sell a top player. Fine . Well done.

But accountants breaking even,,is that not their job?

So thanks but its time to go now as ,,,

There seems to be a huge battle looming for the very soul of not only the club but the whole of Scottish football and this board aint fighters.

Its fighters and a different breed of person going to be required here if we are to tackle the rotten farce that is Scottish football and emerge with something decent.

,,,Wheres the fighting Irish spirit gone? The biggest club in the country whose fans prop up the league are getting treated like crap. Why? And why hasnt someone stood up and said enough? Every generation it seems the tiger should bare its teeth and maybe snap its fangs a little and say you mess with us and you will regret it. I dare you. I see zero fight and apparently we have been stymied in boardrooms of the governing bodies for years.

We should have been told those three blocked our path to a better game so lets boycott their bigoted club eh and focus them . The last generation boycotted a game remember,,why cant this one?

,,,winning the league with 4 times the budget is not going to cut it long term. Its not.

Then we have another article about the zombies. Fan dabby dosey.

Then the next article starts about Scott Brown,,,fine,,but ends telling us the author wishes a lot to win the league at the home of a 6 year old club.

The author has just helped the continuity myth by that stance.

Please Please stop blogging and talking about a 6 year old club as the same as before.

This blog should be leading the fight against continuity instead the host seems to embrace it.

    How disappointing.

The next blog focussed on winning the league ,,, it happens to be at the home ground of our previous rival. Its correct to focus on the next game especially if it could be the clincher but please dont focus on it more just because of dead history. Or because we used to be rivals please.

And then todays blog focuses on a statement by that 6 year old club again.

    Now I have a proposal.

At the end of the season tally up the main focus of the articles.

If theres more articles about a 6 year old club than Celtic then name of this blog should get changed. Or lobby the host to change direction.

Because its not a Celtic blog then.

Ill do the tallying myself actually.

Anyone want to give me odds?

And as far as this blogs slogan goes,,,not lazy journalism,,,dont start me.

Decent slogans that actually ring true are rare these days though so its not just this blog.

It is worth pointing out I feel that possibly the most important event recently for all clubs,,a new head of the SFA was not given an in depth analysis or expectation report.

I myself would have wrote an article pointing out that what should actually have happened is that the SFA looked for leagues that have progressed recently and headhunted the person responsible for the upturn in fortunes to take control and run the SFA as a proper normal business and if/when it ever runs fine then hand it over to someone within the Scottish game to keep ticking over. Those within the game in Scotland at the minute I deem incapable of handling the current shenanigans correctly as they will , rightly or wrongly , be deemed one side or the other,,plus they might well make decisions that will affect the club they are aligned to that could prove detrimental.

Its cold hard decisions need made here and being on the front line living permanently in Scotland or having personal allegiances within the current setup will prove a hindrance not a help.

Hail Hail and I hope anyone that does read this takes this post as constructive criticism and not personal because like I say,,,I call it as I see it and couldnt care less who doesnt like it.

Who would win a fight between the ole Paradise windfall and the ole crossbar challenge?

  3. ‘Welcome to the Jeremy Kyle show, where today we have Rangers in the chair with another statement of greetin’-faced – that’s how I hear they say it up in Scotland, folks – self-indulgence for us all to hear. Rangers, nobody likes you, you don’t care… Well tell us all, why are you ON HERE?’

Missed your reply last night re Roma’s attempted bribe. Didn’t know anything about it at the time, so was hoping for a home win just to shut the commentators up!

In retrospect, glad now that cheats didn’t prosper, of course.

Any who have should, as in athletics, have awards stripped and re-assigned, of course, with records updated by those in charge of governance. Not thinking of anyone in particular, of course.

Any who then wish to be linked to such cheats in whatever way should be mercilessly mocked.

Seems about 70% of the Celtic squad were ill last Friday night, but BR didn’t want to make an issue of it after the Hibs game, as the sour grapes stuff would follow….

Enjoyed your post – a spade that is a blooming great shovel used. Would doubt you will get many answers to some of your questions.

One thing though (honest this is not a Columbo moment) when you say you can see a club die. I assume you mean Celtic here but do you mean going to the wall a la the original Rangers or just the heart and soul of our club which a lot think have been on life support quite a lot over the years?

    Jimbo67

  12. hope we as a team are focusing on the task in hand and not letting all these slap on the back awards ceremonies getting in the way and interrupting our concentration of the big prize.

  13. also should have added i also think we give ‘them’ to much air time on here and some seen ‘obsessed’ with what goes on over there.

  14. where did celtic stay on the friday night ? or what did they all eat at lennoxtown.

    surely not a zombie chef.

  15. Just seen rumour, if we are gonna be spending good money this summer its got to go on a rightback, centreback and centre forward if dembele department.,

the squad is way too big as it is, we could let 10 depart with little impact on the quality.

we have a big squad, of really goos footballers, but injuries in every department have cost us points.

    Read your long post.

Why don’t you ask Celtic FC directly all the questions you mentioned in your post?

You seem to be blaming “our host” for not asking the club about all your concerns.

Get in touch with them yourself, a lot of us do!

Mibbe you could start up your own blog and write more pertinent articles.
