Angry statements, the lowest common denominator

442

Issuing an angry statement ahead of a big game is not a bad strategy.  Angry statements resonate with the lowest common denominator, who are often the ones most likely to cause custodians of the club aggravation.

It is a subliminal way to say “We are just like you, we share your hopes and frustrations.”  It is almost as though they anticipate a difficult time coming up soon.  Throw in the mandatory patronising phrase, like, “supporters who have repeatedly proven themselves to be the most loyal in the country” and you are sorted.

Football fans occupying areas further up the food chain, however, will roll their eyes when reading drivel like, “this decision, which beggars belief.”

What struck me most about Newco’s statement last night is that a chink of self-awareness seemed to be dawning, “clubs the length and breadth of the country….. benefitted financially from the presence of our fans.”

This reaches the heart of the matter.  Newco are profitable for every club they play.  They open their wallets and dump a caravan of cash wherever they go, which is good for P&Ls from Kilmarnock to Dingwall.  It’s just, Newco are not actually profitable.

The model works for everyone else, just not for a club who want more success on the field than their income can buy.  They are a cash cow.  But while they can do wonders for the profitability of smaller clubs, they are impotent when it comes to fixing their own profitability problems.

Don’t resent that smaller clubs get a boost when you visit, do what Celtic do – feel good that you can help the rest of the league.  Be generous in spirit and maybe others will reciprocate.

The solution is not to howl at the moon, adept at it, though Newco are, it is to bring spending into alignment with income.  Beat Hibernian at their own £5m football budget game and respect will follow.

Raffle to play in an 11-a-side game at Celtic Park

An incredible opportunity to play on the hallowed turf at Celtic Park around the end of the current season 2017-18, in Club sponsor Intelligent Car Leasing’s match.

You will be provided with complimentary Celtic kit and receive the full match-day experience including arrival through the front door, access to the dressing room and proudly walking down the tunnel to enter the famous field of play.

Both squads will be managed by a former Celtic player. The game will take place on 16 May, kick off 11:00. All monies raised will be donated to Celtic FC Foundation, a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (number SC024648).

To enter the raffle, make a minimum donation of £5 to the Foundation at this MyDonate page.  Then send your donation confirmation email to this address: celticquicknews@gmail.com

The opportunity to play on Celtic Park is just beyond words.  I did it a few years ago, the memories will live forever, as will the photographs.  The experience of preparing in the dressing room, as so many greats have done before, was fabulous.

You can enter for yourself, or gift the prize to someone you know aged 18 or over. Competition closes at 15:00 this Friday, 27th.

Good luck!

You are spot on with that verse. It’s different to the more traditional words but definitely one that was sung in the late 60s and early to mid 70s.

In these modern times, the quickest of internet searches will give you all the lyrics and history of any song you can think of: including The Merry Ploughboy.

Youtube will give you dozens of renditions of each – usually.

But we all know that – no?

Your version was what I learned on the 64 bus to Paradise as a wean. There was an add on of, feck her son. Charlie the parasite as my dad called him. Don’t ask me what he thought about Diana and Camilla. Think Aberdeen Angus.

Hearing strong rumours of Allen and Christie to Hibs in exchange for McGinn. Every Celtic team needs a Bankie in it. Not had one since Jamie Smith. Patsy Gallacher the best Bankie Tim ever, according to my grandad.

    Jimbob,

I do think the club could die here. Whether its actually dead ala thems or just becomes a pale shadow of what it was is still to be decided.

You cant ask people to pay into a scam and expect to remain as is. Seems a lot will walk away if its a whitewash,,therefore the club is dead to them.

When you add to that their kids wont be going then probably and you might convince a mate or two to stay away or take up golf or whatever. A big percentage could disappear overnight with a whitewash being forced on us .

Also how long do we wait for things to get better,,30 yearsish Ive watched and we are still fenian b^%$*%^$ds and getting treated like crap.

This is despite the fact that weve never been as affluent , worldwide , or as educated and have the world wide web now to communicate or find information in seconds.

Those based in Glasgow and possibly parts of Ireland might need this as theres really no getting away from it when youre there but the rest of the world certainly doesnt and theres more options than ever for the youth of today. They have started to turn their back on the game already without the sideshow.

Kids are not as engaged as they were.

Its an option now where it was just normal that your community in the main supports the team.

Not noticed more EPL strips in what were traditionally Celtic areas also?

Also you do realise things come and go,,nothing is permanent, nothing. Just look at the church,,couldnt move in chapel when i was a boy now its a third full.

Im sure that my granda thought Belfast Celtc would always be there for his entertainment.

One event put that to the sword.

Remember the Glasgow branch nearly folded out before,,Bob Kelly and the flag.

I specifically bring up that example as I want to show that nothing is permanent and things could change at any minute.

He happened to win that particular battle but if he hadnt we probably wouldnt be on this blog as the Glasgow based team could well have died .

So thats death because of corruption,,lets look at the other possible slow death,,boredom.

I read on here its a great time to be a fan as we are on our way to 10 in a row.

Ok,,i get it,,i honestly do. No one has done 10 and it would be pure dominance.

However the bigger picture is in 20 years Jobo might be excited and type only 5 more sleeps until we have a chance to do 27 ina row ( and with 4 times the budget of your nearest rival you will walk the league if you are in any way competent.)

    But is that really exciting?

If you grabbed a pure hard nose businessman right now and said what happens when one team has 4 times the budget I would expect he would tell you slow death.

We found ourselves in competition with our dead rival but they effed up the genuine competition by borrowing more than they earn and not paying tax etc.

    Not our fault.

But we dont have any competitors in the real sense,,,its whether its a treble or not now in the main and how bad the humpings in Europe.

That is not going to work long term,,not for broadcasters ,, not for any loose soul that likes genuine competition and I would expect eventually even Jobo will get bored.

Dominance is not competition. And we do want genuine competition right? No point in knowing youre gonna win is there?

Maybe Im wrong here and Im sure some would show up no matter what but I dont wanna know whose gonna win, on the day plus overall.

In the sports over here you honestly cannot tell whose gonna win usually.

I mean the Eagles won superbowl. No one had a clue they would do it.

The yanks for one would desire a genuine fair competition.

Throw one team being loaded and bent refs and governing bodies into the mix,,not to mention songs that would get you locked up here being broadcast regular and you can forget about improving the market share here.

Nothing is exciting about watching the same thing all the time.

Now some might say Mahe I get a great thrill watching the team run out and hearing our songs etc. so i will keep going.

Fine,,but thats more habit than genuine sport.

Most want proper sport not to find a new habit.

If you were to say to me well what do you suggest I would respond dump the profit into charity and spend the average amount as any other team . Would bring real competition,,maybe a bit of respect from those who have none for us and more from those that do plus Brother Walfrid would smile at that.

Or do a Bilbao and say homegrown only.

There’s 2 scenarios that I personally find way more attractive than spending way more than anyone else and they would entice me and others Im sure to support the primary branch.

Philbhoy the club never responded to me when I informed of my decision to withdraw support. I was not rude,,I promise you. My father would turn in his grave if I acted a tough guy over an anonymous internet.

They made it hard for me to cancel Celtic tv for having the audacity to bail during these heady days. Our heroes eh.

    For a Bob Kelly now.

As for calling Paul67 by name or our host, I doubt that the good chap cares that much.

However as it might be thought of as rude I will refer to Paul by name from now on as I really dont want to seem or be rude to anyone that doesnt deserve it.

St Stivs,,,I meant for our own visitors from outside Glasgow like Almore. Not away fans. My mistake.

Wont be on for a while but I will read back later or tomorrow.

  13. 4 at least are injury prone, the others are not quality, and next season we need at least 3 or 4 Quality players, there is no excuse, the Fans like myself, have done there bit over the years,so it’s time for this Board of Directors,to do likewise,if not then the fans should ask them to move on,and let some others take the task of running the club.

  20. Saint stev we will be paying 90% of the loan players wages and too many of those guys are either always out injuried or offer no better quality than the younger players we have.

If we get 12 or even 15 fringe players lots out we could easily bring in 3, 4 or even 5 quality 1st team player that means the quality of compitition for places going up significantly without adding to the overall wage bills.

Yes the squad would be leaner but all those in and around it would able to step in rather than being totally out if the picture cause not good enough.

KT, Mcgregor and ajar are all from our youth and bhoys like johnson and atchison have the potential too.

We dont need a 35 man squad, we should have no more than two first team goalie and a youth and a outfield squad of no more tha 22 with youths brought in as required.

Oldbhoy is correct its time to step it up, quality over quantity is the only and best way to achieve that.

Do you hate European fitba because we are shite at it now? Celtic and European fitba has been a frustration to me. I was 1 when we won the Big Cup in May ’67. My first Euro memory was Dixie blasting a penalty into the stratosphere. I was 5. Hisnae got much better.

All of these clubs are well supported. All their leagues are well funded by broadcaster; as is the ECL.

    We are dominating now.
