Another dysfunctional league

644

The Football League in England have woken up to the notion that they do not have a working business model.  Solidarity payments from the FA Premier League’s new TV deal will earn Championship clubs £2.3m a season (considerably more than Celtic will receive from TV for winning the SPL), with League One sides earning £324k and League Two sides earning £250k.

Unfortunately, for those hoping to establish a well-balanced and competitive structure, parachute payment to those relegated from the Premier League will earn each club £69m (£23m in year one, £18m in year two and £9m in years three and four).

The Guardian report that today Championship clubs are expected to warn the Premier League that they risk permanently damaging the “integrity of the Football League” by increasing parachute payments to the proposed level.  An unusual case of a group asking for some of its members to receive less money.

The Football League doesn’t have a viable business model.  Clubs spend unsustainable amounts of money trying to attain the riches of the Premier League, where they can add zeros to both income and expenditure.  Most fail and many of them plummet down the divisions.  Even those who drop into the Championship with parachute payments (albeit at the old level) find deleveraging too difficult.

The SPL doesn’t have a viable business model either.  They should be talking to the Football League and see what benefits could accrue from working together.

A SCOOBY DOO footie mascot was cleared of sparking a riot at a match — because one cop copied another’s report.

But the case against him collapsed after Sergeant Colin Shankly, 46, admitted in evidence he duplicated the notes of fellow witness Inspector Stewart McColm.

Sheriff Kenneth Robb said yesterday: “One officer’s statement was a straight copy of the other. I don’t know the real truth of what happened and I am not prepared to convict on that basis.”

A SOBBING driver told yesterday how a top cop ploughed into her car in a horror smash.

Hannah Shedden, 25 was badly injured when then chief constable Norma Graham hit her head-on on a rural road.Miss Shedden said: “I pulled out and saw a car heading straight towards me. It was on my side of the road.Miss Graham, who was also injured, retired from her £120,000-a-year top job at Fife Constabulary seven months after the smash on a full pension.

Are some sections of the TA delivering a message to the SFA regards the rampant corruption that they are overseeing in their country’s football?

  4. Snake

I actually think Scotland will edge tomorrow’s game and end up finishing 3rd in the table.

Even with a difficult qualifying draw for France 2016, with the tournament bloated to 24 teams they should be in with a good chance of making it.

  5. Ten Men Won The League

A Friday night match doesn’t make it easy from anyone outside Glasgow or the surrounding area to make it to Hampden before the game kicks off or get home. Unless they have special trains to Edinburgh running even getting between Scotland’s two major cities will be difficult without taking the car or going in an organised bus.

With the many teuchters that follow Scotland it makes it almost impossible to make the match without taking time off work or/and staying in Glasgow for the evening. We have a small backward country when it comes to transport late at night.

The match is also on TV and I suspect that most of the TA will be watching it in their local boozer with a pint rather than sitting freezing their nuts off at Hampden.

I also suspect that the number of kids attending will be well down due to the weather and the issues people also have with travelling. Is their a worse stadium in Britain to park your car at? Hampden had very little car parking facilities when my old man took the motor in the 80’s. It’s probably far worse now.

Fergus got another thing right in his time at Paradise and that was that money spent on Hampden was a waste of cash. He knew the limitations of the ground at first hand being forced to rent the ground at inflated rates for the season Paradise was being renovated into a world class facility.

I’m sure I read that redevloping the main stand at Hampden was done at more cost than the whole of the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff which although I believe is not situated in a great area for parking, etc is a top class arena.

The seating behind the goal at Hampden is a disgrace. It was one of the worlds great terraced stadia. I had many great days there in my youth when the sun shone and we won trophies but it should have been vacated years ago for a super stadia with excellent transport links and parking facilities.

It says it all about Scottish football that it was renovated. It’s a national embarrassment and fans are turning their back on it. I know loads of Celtic fans who refuse to go to Hampden.

The national stadium should be the best in the country. Our national football stadium is even worse than the asbestos dome and isn’t anywhere near as good as Murrayfield which was built many years before it.

The SFA get many things wrong but this an example of something they got horribly wrong!

  7. LiviBhoy

Count me as one of those Celtic fans who are finished with going to Hampden.

Last game there was SC semi final against the minis last April.

No more money from my pocket will go towards the SFA coffers.

  8. LiviBhoy

Regards the game tomorrow. It should be a sell out. No excuses. The TA have known for over a year when the game would be played etc. Our CL games are midweek with many people having to take days off, stay overnight in Glasgow etc and they are sold out at short notice.

Imo they are disillusioned with the way the game is being run in this country.

Throughout the 90s and early Millennium football grounds were being built or redeveloped all over the world as the game moved into the modern era.

The general consensus was the days of running tracks around the stadium were over – not only did that feature restrict the view, but with all-seated grounds it also had a negative impact on the atmosphere.

So what to the people running Scottish Football do? Stick seats on the old terracing and spend an obscene amount of money building a museum, offices and underground car park in the main stand.

Useless as well as corrupt. They really are hopeless in every respect.

Hampden is a toilet. I’ll never be back in the place again – for many reasons.

Are we going to apply for a permit to march to Celtic Park on league winning day??

  20. South Of Tunis @11:52 they’re obviously not confident enough in their kitchen sink legislation to have it aired outside Scotland.

I’m sure, having followed the legal debate prior to enactment, that outside Scotland any conviction will be laughed out of court.

Alex Salmond and a large part of the Edinburgh legal and political establishment were so desperate to keep things in-house that they resorted to the most ludicrous arguments in order to stop the criminal appeal process crossing the border to the UK Supreme Court.

For all their bluster much of the Edinburgh legal establishment don’t fancy a straightener with the boys down south.

They also don’t want those London legals encroaching on their their wee fiefdom.
