Another dysfunctional league

644

The Football League in England have woken up to the notion that they do not have a working business model.  Solidarity payments from the FA Premier League’s new TV deal will earn Championship clubs £2.3m a season (considerably more than Celtic will receive from TV for winning the SPL), with League One sides earning £324k and League Two sides earning £250k.

Unfortunately, for those hoping to establish a well-balanced and competitive structure, parachute payment to those relegated from the Premier League will earn each club £69m (£23m in year one, £18m in year two and £9m in years three and four).

The Guardian report that today Championship clubs are expected to warn the Premier League that they risk permanently damaging the “integrity of the Football League” by increasing parachute payments to the proposed level.  An unusual case of a group asking for some of its members to receive less money.

The Football League doesn’t have a viable business model.  Clubs spend unsustainable amounts of money trying to attain the riches of the Premier League, where they can add zeros to both income and expenditure.  Most fail and many of them plummet down the divisions.  Even those who drop into the Championship with parachute payments (albeit at the old level) find deleveraging too difficult.

The SPL doesn’t have a viable business model either.  They should be talking to the Football League and see what benefits could accrue from working together.

  1. If Celtic were of a mind to co-operate, they could broadcast CQN from within Celtic Park and it would not have to cost a penny to tune in i.e. – it would bypass your broadband provider.

Unless Celtic wanted to charge for it.

They could do the same for the GB’s website.

    What are the odds?

  3. Hello fans, again.

I went back to the excellent Financial Fair Play site to read about the business of Liverpool’s recent forced cash injection – older readers will be pleased to hear that there are several references to amortisation in the article.

Anyhow, reference is made to one very interesting difficulty that faces any club with ambition to play European football. the monitoring IN ADVANCE of applicants’ accounts. Specifically, for clubs with regular financial losses, loans, even interest-free loans, from directors just won’t do:

“Understandably, converting debt to equity is not something owners want to do if they can help it. However Liverpool’s owners are going to have to put their hands in their pocket and do this to ensure they can apply for a UEFA licence. Clubs apply for a license in advance so we can be sure Liverpool will apply – however this requirement will mean Liverpool’s owners will have to put their hands in their pockets for around £26m to cover the two years of the first Monitoring Period …”

  8. Liverpool 2003 memories :

Was the one game that when I try to explain the feelings you can get at a football game, and the main reason I go to the football is to try and get that feeling, that is THE game I’m talking about.

When Johnbhoy hit the 2nd me and my mate went absolutely nuts in the middle of Liverpool fans in the stand across from the main stand. I’m talking jumping screaming and spinning round like a feckin banshee nuts. Im getting the hairs standing up at the moment thinking about it. When we came round a couple of minutes later from this unbelievable high I though we were going to get lynched. But to a man the scousers were brilliant with us with loads of them coming over the end to wish us good luck.

When fans of the smaller teams in Scotland go on about the feelings if winning a domestic honour THAT’S what we all felt on the run to Seville. We don’t get anywhere near those feelings from winning titles and cups here.

They’re brilliant to win and I love it but they just don’t reach that ultimate scrape me off the ceiling I can’t believe what we’ve just done feeling that the Uefa run gave us! IMHO !!

Thanks – as we thought – although there was a bit of confusion on this subject.

Re the book you are reading, you will have another book to read very shortly from CQN Books and I am sure you will enjoy it just as much!

It has some wonder content and with people like Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan involved you can imagine how good it will be. It will be out early May and Paul will announce all the details shortly.

great post, I was just talikng to 2 of the lads from the Duleek cycle who are feeling better than they thought they would, bodies not too sore!!!

We thought we did well with 3 of us getting into the Patrick’s day parade in Newry ( a day early) but that was because we took a wrong turn and had to get through it to catch up with the rest of the group!!

Raging I missed the belfast parade and some of the group actually being invited into the front!!! that’s impressive,

My 10 year old brought the Wee Oscar medal into school on Tuesday, proud as punch!!!

  11. I remember the Liverpool game. A pal of mine, an Ennis man, like his contemporaries had decided in his teens to support the team that was successful in England. So Liverpool it was. He came to my house to watch the game with many others. Such was his enthusiasm to be seated, watching, smoking and drinking, that he left the handbrake off on his motor. Right into the car of a Millwall fan it rolled at speed.

He begged us not to tell his wife.

  12. Paul,

the rarely repeated news that West Ham have mortgaged next season’s TV money to the tune of £18m, rising to the full amount as it becomes clear they will stay up, and that five other EPL clubs have done the same in order to support historic debt and this season’s activities, hardly raising an eyebrow amongst league officials, fans or commentators, suggests to me the whole thing may come tumbling down oldco style at any moment…. and the band played on.

  13. Was feeling a bit down re football issues but today has cheered me up a lot. On todays issues, thought the Sandaza wind up was nasty, thought Alloa Chairman laughing at Chuck’s non-sensical plea was brilliant, thought the Celtic Supporters Association war-cry ” The more you harass us the stronger we’ll become” was inspirational. All of us on here should bury our personal differences and unite under this banner. If we stay united and determined we will prevail. Hail Hail.

  14. P.S. Finally, to the Wee Oscar Cyclists, back up teams & everybody involved in this fanatastic venture, congratulations and well done, you take my breath away.

No one there followed ” soccer”

When the second goal went in I couldn’t contain myself… ran out the office screaming ” goalllllllllllllllllll …. “

  16. Have enjoyed the Tommy fae Glesgae stuff in the past, but agree that it was cruel on Sandaza.

  17. I watched the liverpool Celtic game from behind the settee and only came out with 3 mins to go……wimp

  21. Shame, for ole Sandaza, especially since he’s daft enough to discuss his intimate personal details over a moblile phone, with someone he’s never met in his life.

  22. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

Aye that was cruel on the rangers playing millionaire mercenary lacking in moral fibre even in comparison with one of them. The only pity that I feel is that he didn’t get a chance to stiff them for real.

    Well done tommy. Expose

  23. 10 years ago…….game changing moment….big Rab’s save from Gerrard..world class

  24. I found Tommy’s phone call to Sandaza cringeworthy.

More so for the stupidity and naivety of Sandaza. Who in their right minds gives out their personal details like he does over the phone to a stranger.

  25. The Comfortable Collective on

Have not listended to Tommy, so if my analysis of the phone call is wrong, based on what I have read, then I will stand corrected.

But is the crux of this not that Sandaza has tried to get himself “tapped up”.

Is that not against the rules when you are contracted to another club?

And on another note. . . “Amazing fans” he calls them. Serves the stupid hun right.
