Answering tangential digs at Celtic

570

I see Celtic’s name was dragged by the media into what some low-life vandals did outside Ibrox this week – and a few years ago, for good measure.  There are low-life vandals out there, and we don’t have a way to filter them out of the Celtic support, so I‘d not dispute any of the tangential links, but vandalism like this happens all too often without media coverage.

When stories suddenly appear to be so well framed in the newspapers, you have to wonder why?  Or who is behind them?

There’s a big play underway for what, in this context, should be called Supremacy in Scotland.  Celtic have it right now and no one else is strong enough to eclipse them.  The best way to achieve this is to destabilise the club.  It’s worked, but only to an extent.

I read Paul Larkin on Hail Hail Media this morning who raises some interesting questions on what’s going on and what we should do about it, “as a collective, cannot be beaten”.  It’s hard to argue with.

We’ve got two exciting bits of Magners business for you today………..

First, if you want to win two Premium Seat tickets to the Jock Stein Stand for Sunday’s potential league winning game against Aberdeen, courtesy of main club sponsor, Magners, answer this question about our last 9-in-a-row campaign:

Against which team did Celtic win the first of their 9 consecutive titles, in 1966?

It was a famous game, settled by a famous scorer.  Email the team name IN THE SUBJECT LINE of your message, to celticquicknews@gmail.com

Competition closes at 17:00 TODAY, so you only have a few hours…..

And there’s more……  How do you fancy playing on Celtic Park in 12 days’ time?  Go to Facebook and enter this Magners competition to win a place in the end of season 7s tournament.

You get to grace the place that McGrory, Johnstone, Dalglish and Larsson did their stuff.  Do it.

Now I’ve got you in a good mood.  If you’ve a spare £1 in your metaphorical pocket, go stick it into the CQN Mary’s Meals appeal  Those CQN school kitchens in Malawi feed over 2,000 kids each day.  That’s food needed every day………

I think that the counter argument is that advertising alcohol in general does make the population as a whole consume more alcohol than they otherwise would.

I am Ceasing purchasing anything Celtic (Celtic TV since 2003 and Celtic clothing etc)

As fans, we should realise this may be our LAST CHANCE.

I believe PL is hoping for a huge mass response re cancellations of everything Celtic in order that he has the legitamacy to explain to “scottish football” that “he had no choice but to re think all of the circumstances” and alter his position re the concerns listed by Embramike in post of 12.43pm today.

Hi Ernie. This time last week you were giving me pelters about thon big bad SNP imposing rigid discipline on its members.

Given the backstabbing going on in the Peoples’ Party in the run up to today’s elections, Jezza would give his eye teeth for any kind of discipline.

  11. Weeminger…

Which do you think would be the most popular choice if you gave all of the support the following choice:

    1) an ethical sponsor or charity on the shirt;

    2) £5M more in the transfer budget.

All things being equal, I think most fans would be behind an ethical sponsor. Or at least a large number would. Regardless, it’s a false dichotomy – neither of us have any way of knowing, so your opinion on this is as important and valid as mine. I do think though that it would give a. The board something to rally the fans under, a positive message instead of the race to the bottom that is the current constant downsizing and corporate newspeak. B. It might actually attract people to the club. And maybe, just maybe sell more jerseys into the bargain. I know a lot of people that wouldn’t buy the strip with an alcohol sponsor. And I know more that now won’t consider with a betting company. These same people won’t buy their children strips either. Look at the PR Barca got for the UNICEF sponsorship – we could choose to lead. Or even to learn the Bernie Sanders method of financing things. People sometimes will choose ethical over corporate.

The point of course, is that most fans just don’t really care. The majority don’t care about Res 12 or LNS. The majority don’t really care that much about PL and DD. The majority are quite happy to see TRFC in the SPL.

Resolution 12 has been terribly poorly communicated. In part because the club has refused to publicise it. And frankly, the people moving forward with it aren’t big enough in number to publicise it properly, not least in the face of corporate conniving to keep it out of the spotlight. If Alex Thomson or similar had picked it up? I think we’d see a different situation. People care about it when they find out. They can’t care about something they don’t know about.

Social media creates a bubble where you read, agree with and follow people of a similar mind and ppl end up believing their issues are far more common and supported than they really are.

An unscientific survey of 5 supporters in my office (with various amounts of online engagement) revealed that only two had even the slightest idea what Res 12 was, and one of them wasn’t really bothered about it.

I agree with you. Absolutely.msocial media does have a habit, and aided by Google et al of simply serving you more of what you like. By the same token however, it’s great means of engaging with people. Again, look at the Cruz campaign, derailed in no small part by social media. Look at Bernie Sanders – he should never have been able to compete, but he is. His fundraising has been more effective than it had any right to be, yet it’s had no corporate backing and a negative media. I’m not saying it’s the answer, but it’s a different avenue to try. And one that’s far far better than the current corporate whoring and abandonment of the very ethos of the club.

You’ve made a really interesting point though, and it’s worth bearing in mind while I’m tub thumping. :)

  16. The Battered Bunnet on

I’m not entirely sure what might define an ‘ethical sponsor’. I’m equally sure few such would consider sponsoring a football team when there are myriad other better uses of the money such an ethical sponsor might put it to.

If we are prepared to thole the Celtic jersey as an advertising medium, with few exceptions we must surely accept that, provided the business and the product/service are legitimate, the sponsor who values it most highly gets the space, whether that be Durex, Astra Zeneca or EMI Records.

It’s not all sex and drugs and rock n roll of course. Sometimes it’s a little more mundane, like cider or online betting or broadband provision.

Suggestions of a charity logo on the strip seem well-meaning, but ignore the reality that many people object to the purposes and activities of many charities. Simply because an organisation is a registered charity doesn’t make its purposes and activities ethical in the minds of all.

And those who hold up Hearts as an example might like to look into the details of the deal. It’s not all sweetness and light, the charity refusing permission for their logo to be used unless it got a slice of the dough put up by the three fans who paid Hearts for the privilege. In other words, really nice idea as it wasby the three benefactors, it wasn’t worth the charity’s time to have their logo on the Hearts strip for free. Presumably they felt Hearts would get more benefit from the deal than they would.

Rumour has it that the current (new) deals with Dafabet and Magners are worth around £5M per season to Celtic, triple the last one with Magners alone. This money, amongst other things, facilitates the club to continue its support for the marvellous Celtic FC Foundation. How much of course is unknown ahead of time, but will be seen when the annual reports are published in the coming years.

How much would the Foundation benefit if the club eschewed such commercial sponsorship and instead carried the Foundation logo on the strip? Did the donations pour in last year when we ran with the Foundation logo in Europe?

    Ach….

I am not sure where you actually live but I am certainly unaware of any stats which show any region in Scotland which comes close to the level of alcohol abuse you speak of.

  21. THE BATTERED BUNNET on 5TH MAY 2016 4:11 PM

It was of course a hypothetical, as in my cynical view few organisations big enough to consider Celtic sponsorship are likely to be that ethical.

increasingly my view is that most of the support, while of course loving what the club is, (or was depending on your point of view), really just want to turn up on a fortnightly basis and cheer the team. There not overly concerned with the politics and ramifications at board level. So if you give them a stark choice of a ‘nice’ sponsor and £5M for the team on the park, they’ll take the latter. I personally wouldn’t care either way. I can see merits in both arguments.

    I stand open to correction.

As far as I am aware, in the Dumbarton-Vale of Leven area, population around thirty five to forty thousand, there are around twenty AA sessions per week. And that is only those admitting to having a problem.

As for alcohol on shirts and guns, there are, if you will pardon the pun, vested interests who will turn a blind eye to the damage done.

Although I realise that is unenforceable, I personally would put a total ban on alcohol.

It wasn’t a attack on Paul67, it was my take on Paul67’s position. He promised a ‘big picture’ post weeks ago. Still waiting. In the interim he has now implied several times that Celtic fans are a problem if they have complaints. And failed to address the major issues affecting our club.

For me, it’s simple. There’s a choice – Celtic fan or Peter Lawwell/board fan. If you choose to news manage on the behalf of the people running Celtic then you’re not a Celtic fan. The most important thing should always be Celtic. Celtic first and last and always. If the board serve that cause? Great, support them. But when they don’t? Spare nothing in getting rid.

Paul67 has set a very high watermark. I make no apology for holding him to it and the ‘not lazy journalism’ tag.

There are plenty of supporters reading the articles but not the comments. Indeed five minutes ago 814 were reading the ‘Any Whispers’ story, 368 were on the comments section, 130 reading ‘Celtic Congratulated’ featured and another 20 odd pages were be read with 4 people reading about Boruc’s new deal.

On ethical sponsorships, I introduced Celtic to the electronic cigarettes brand E-Lites as they were looking to spend some money on half a dozen English Premier League sides. I twisted a few arms and got them to come to Paradise and some of their marketing money went to Celtic.

Celtic got considerable grief about it and the next time I saw the Celtic director who okayed the deal, he complained about the hassle, forgetting to thank me for the revenue the club got!

Turns out that the BMA reckon that they are very useful products in helping people quit smoking and the anti tobacco group ASH are right behind these brands. Last week it was reported that they take away 95% of the risks associated with smoking.

We asked the brand to respect our wishes and not do a deal with any other club but within a year they had sneaked across to Govan.

    Re alcohol advertising

I think you make an interesting point. Unfortunately I worked in the government on this area and I have worked on a few brands also. It is the medium and the market you are in which will determine if alcohol advertising is likely to encourage increased consumption or brand switching / loyalty.

In western and developed markets there is little evidence of increased consumption from advertising over the past 20 years. On the other hand there is ample evidence of brand switching, or affinity through things like football shirt sponsorship.

Carling launched in Scotland on the shirts of the 2 biggest teams. There was a decline in overall beer volume over the subsequent period of 10 years however carling still took over 5% share and achieved its aims.

I think it is a bit over simplistic to say alcohol advertising necessarily is aimed at increasing consumption overall.
