Answering tangential digs at Celtic

570

I see Celtic’s name was dragged by the media into what some low-life vandals did outside Ibrox this week – and a few years ago, for good measure.  There are low-life vandals out there, and we don’t have a way to filter them out of the Celtic support, so I‘d not dispute any of the tangential links, but vandalism like this happens all too often without media coverage.

When stories suddenly appear to be so well framed in the newspapers, you have to wonder why?  Or who is behind them?

There’s a big play underway for what, in this context, should be called Supremacy in Scotland.  Celtic have it right now and no one else is strong enough to eclipse them.  The best way to achieve this is to destabilise the club.  It’s worked, but only to an extent.

I read Paul Larkin on Hail Hail Media this morning who raises some interesting questions on what’s going on and what we should do about it, “as a collective, cannot be beaten”.  It’s hard to argue with.

We’ve got two exciting bits of Magners business for you today………..

First, if you want to win two Premium Seat tickets to the Jock Stein Stand for Sunday’s potential league winning game against Aberdeen, courtesy of main club sponsor, Magners, answer this question about our last 9-in-a-row campaign:

Against which team did Celtic win the first of their 9 consecutive titles, in 1966?

It was a famous game, settled by a famous scorer.  Email the team name IN THE SUBJECT LINE of your message, to celticquicknews@gmail.com

Competition closes at 17:00 TODAY, so you only have a few hours…..

And there’s more……  How do you fancy playing on Celtic Park in 12 days’ time?  Go to Facebook and enter this Magners competition to win a place in the end of season 7s tournament.

You get to grace the place that McGrory, Johnstone, Dalglish and Larsson did their stuff.  Do it.

Now I’ve got you in a good mood.  If you’ve a spare £1 in your metaphorical pocket, go stick it into the CQN Mary’s Meals appeal  Those CQN school kitchens in Malawi feed over 2,000 kids each day.  That’s food needed every day………

And here’s another thing, I just read elsewhere that David Duchovney used to spend his holidays in East Kilbride.

That’s gotta be a case for the X Files! No?

Anyhoo. 20 years from now ..our whims will be like cotton candy.. So why not enjoy the Hoops while we can?….

*exactly, this site seems tae have turned intae the Neganon or TGM show, I bet the last time they 2 smiled was when they had hives.

I grasp a sense of anxiety among our support just now especially with that “new” team being promoted, and that’s what it’s all about, nothing tae dae with the Champions’ League, where other than punching above our weight as MON said in 2003, we have not been a major player in Europe since the current CL finalist mugged us on and off the park in 1974.

Forget Resolution 12, well let’s not really forget it, as this is not something new but let’s stop using it as a big stick tae beat the Board with,

I have written extensively about the anti-Celtic stance that has been taken since the authorities realised that the nice wee team fae the east end of Glasgow was now a threat tae the calvinistic domination held by the Spiders and then the Hi Hi.

In 1912, Glasgow Merchant sir john ure primrose, a former Lord Provost of the dear green place became chairman of the zombies. He was a fervent unionist and along with the inverclyde pirate was staunchly anti-Catholic, he publicly allied them to the masonic cause, tying them to the authorities, media and halls of justice, he also saw his clubs rivalry with Celtic as a money-making enterprise, and like randolph churchill played the celemetine sectarianism card catering to a large niche of the local market.

Since the bounce of the ball in the penalty shootout beat us this place and other Celtic minded cyber space sites have went intae overdrive with weeping and gnashing of teeth, let’s not delude ourselves as if we had won on the shoot out we would have overlooked a turgid display and celebrated that win just as I did in the 1974 Dryborough Cup Final when on leaving the stadium singing heard someone mention it was only the DC when one punter replied “I don’t care if we played them for a chocolate watch I just want tae beat them”.

I’m NOT saying we should imitate an ostrich here and forget the aforesaid turgid displays but MON’s side also had them as did WGS, wee Lenny tae aye and even though the Centennial side at times were last minute winners there displays were not that great, the occasion was and IMHO it was us the support that carried them, even the Big Mhan’s teams sometimes struggled tae win games , yes we have a right tae complain when things aren’t going well although I much preferred the “always look on the bright side of life” support that we used tae have.

Let’s not forget that although the huns used tae sing “nobody likes us we don’t care”, that should actually be us ‘cause nobody in that best wee bigoted country in the world does.

As the wee mhan fae Croy once said “being a Celtic supporter is not always easy, but it’s always worthwhile”.

We are Tiocfaidh ár lá here but we are or should be on the one road together now who cares, we are all CFC has, the players, staff, boardroom etc, so let’s get behind the bhoys as we push on tae at least 6-in-a-row and more silverware no matter who is in the dugout or on the park.

    God bless Celtic Football club

If supporters are unhappy with the Board’s actions and buy their SBs or travel over from Ireland as per normal, without making any form of a representation to the Board…

Would it be in anyway hypocritical for the same supporters to post comments next season, decrying honest mistakes, SFA dishonesty or the Celtic Board? Possibly even phone into Talkshows etc to complain?

After all we all know we’ve been cheated. So if we buy into the Old Firm circus? Without any changes or transparency.

Spent most of today worrying about how my younger son found the Higher English paper this morning and when I read about our 17s captain, Lewis Bell, also in the middle of his exams it was a comfort to know he’s in possession of a current Celtic contract, so doesn’t face an uncertain future, immediately.

No doubt some of his team-mates won’t be moved up to the development 20s squad and similarly some, or most, of that squad will be released soon as happens every season.

I hope Celtic do work on behalf of all youth players released, either to assist them into another club or to guide them in a new direction. Senior professionals have their union as a back-stop but I’ve never read much about Celtic’s approach to these youngsters’ next step.

Aside from all that, fingers-crossed, Sean.

  7. Quonno

Of course everyone is entitled to their view.

Have you gone same view on sugar or sweets or crisps or Mars bars or chips or caffeine of fast food cooked in crap oil ?

All health risks impacting massively on our society ? With huge secondary impacts also !

  8. CLOGHER CELT

Don’t be buying into the non interest of CFC and board not interested in res.12, that’s just another myth, res.12 is the buzz word that sets off the anti CFC board and slagging of the club, when in fact it’s the opposite, stick around, time will tell.

  9. There seems to be a real need for supporters to find a way to let the people running Celtic to know that they are dissatisfied by the way the club is being run and how it interacts with the wider Scottish Football establishment.

A common approach seems to be to hold back ST monies to hit the club where it hurts and hopefully spur board into action. This may prove to be a successful approach but it is a risky one. Celtic have had seasons before when the attendances were low and the club came through it and carried on. The board may take that view and sit on their hands.

If this was the course of events it would generally go unnoticed, both in Scotland and in the wider football community. It could even lead to one of our competitors winning the league next year.

Maybe a more constructive approach could be to buy that season ticket and turn up to support Celtic, not the board, Celtic. Then hold your protest at the end of the match. Stay in your seat, hold up a banner, get noticed.

If enough fans did that each week it would not only make the local news, it would make news outside of Scotland. That would embarrass the board and would not hurt Celtic football Club.

    Just a thought.

For the record I gave up my season ticket last year as I was only able to get to about 3 games a year and cost.

It is alcohol abuse which causes the damage not alcohol.

And guns don’t kill people. Or so the apologists for lack of regulation tell us. Still, mothers are killed by their own children on an all too regular basis by the guns they legally own.

I enjoy a glass of wine or a Gin or a Whisky most nights and have never had any domestic incidents such as you suggest.

I dare say Jimmy Savile never assaulted you either. Doesn’t make him an alright guy, does it?

Are you denying the problems across society that alcohol and gambling have caused? Or that these issues directly affect people in a lot of Celtic fans socio-economic circle? How about cigarette advertising? Would you be ok with this? Or with Wonga being our sponsor on the basis you’ve never had a poverty problem?

Magners on a shirt does not make any one drink more often. It may make

Folk drink magnets instead of Bulmers or some other brand.

Are you seriously saying that advertising alcohol is not intended to increase consumption of said alcohol? Seriously? Why is cigarette advertising banned? Why is betting and alcohol advertising banned on TV at certain times? Do you think that advertising has no impact on children?

If magners have a marketing budget it will be spent whether on celtic or whatever.

Your point being if they’re spending money it might as well be with Celtic? Maybe we could look at UKIP sponsoring a match program, or the BNP having a man of the match award? Maybe they could share it with a tobacco company – after all, we’ve had an ex-chairman of British American Tobacco on Dermot’s board. Are you comfortable with that too? His remit was only to increase smoking in Europe.

Whilst the above is clearly satirical – what makes us ‘more than a club’ if we have no moral compass?

If we’re happy to dance on the backs of the bruised we’re no bette than any other football club, and possibly, when you look at the board members, considerably worse.

  11. Celtic please listen on

Couple of things for me that doesn’t sit right, the media outlets that have been referred to why give these harbingers of doom in all things Celtic any advertising space? Is the sponsorship we receive that great ? No amount of money from these outlets & i include the broadcast media in this is worth the lies & spin they peddle. I’m reading & agree we are pumped in the press every opportunity but why do we take it ? Is it for the money ? Simple solution Celtic chase them, you can’t advertise & take there money continually in full knowledge of the pap & lies they write & spin, season after season. Do it & highlight the reasons many examples on a weekly basis of total keech are written & said in the media it shouldn’t be to difficult. Trust for me is gone, renewals in today not a single mention hint of anything at all with regards to many issues surrounding the game. Various statements & pieces by all & sundry but zero from our club, i know none of those writing & making statements whether opinion or fact as they have been given in confidence. Am i missing something here ? Embramike great post nail firmly on the head, disagree on one point fitba side of things. Poor results, performances bad seasons part & parcel, apologies if i have read that part wrongly. An interesting post on the recent sponsorship deal. I’ve been too busy this week to comment on the rights and wrongs but I’ve read a fair bit about it on here and elsewhere.

Coincidentally, my views tie in with SFTB’s and your posts earlier today. Weeminger asked the question what would most Celtic supporters want:-

    A) a more ethical or non paying sponsor

    Or

    B) an additional £5m in the transfer kitty.

    I’d elect for B.

Now I know that probably wouldn’t be the winner if it went to a vote, but that would be my choice. My main reason for this would be that, in my opinion, it would be more in keeping with the founding ethos of Brother Walfrid. Now this is where it ties in with the earlier posts I mentioned :-)

It’s no secret that not long after Celtic’s inception the focus moved quickly from charity to a requirement for commercial success. To focus on this, and again this is only my opinion, belittles somewhat, the very real reason of why we were founded. To feed the starving of St Michael’s, Sacred Heart and St Mary’s parishes. This is what makes our club special. It is this that sets us apart from every other club in world football.

Having said all this I do understand the need for the current board to have ‘commercial success’ in the very same manner that John Glass did. If, as claimed, it’s the biggest sponsorship deal in Scottish football history then the board deserve credit for achieving it.

However, the post by Summa, where he highlighted the dangers of irresponsible gambling, left me feeling uncomfortable. I know other posters who could have highlighted the risks of alcoholic excess. I’m not saying for a second that Celtic’s deals would necessarily increase the risk of over indulgence of both of these pastimes. But it could.

I’d have loved Mary’s Meals to have adorned our beloved Hoops. Sadly, commercial success makes that only a pipe dream.

Ps alternatively, I’d have been OK with Mr Kipling’s exceedingly good cakes :-)

    Off to 5s.

It might not suit your sad little anti celtic diatribe. The facts are clear alcohol and in particular beer declined in consumption since the two biggest clubs were sponsored by a beer company. That beer company was very happy with the outcome. That beer brand would not be a type of alcohol regularly consumed by those who have alcohol issues.

Blame the celtic board if you feel it makes you feel a lot better. Many on here seem to get their kicks from it… You are completely wrong however on this issue.

    Afternoon All.

    A number of points.

I have no great issue on the name of the shirt sponsor to be honest nor that currently we are sponsored by a betting company or a drinks brand.

Personally I would prefer a different approach but for business reasons. Celtic want to break out into a market beyond Scotland and have a marketing reach that goes beyond local. For me, If I were in the marketing team my first port of call would have been to Emirates Airlines who fly in and out of Glasgow airport to Dubai like clockwork. They are headed up businesswise locally by an Irish guy I believe.

They have a tie in with football through Arsenal but have no Scottish presence . andso there would be no conflict of interest and they are heavy sponsors elsewhere– Benfica I think.

Such a deal would be attractive in that it would increase Celtic’s move influence and name in the middle east and there could be a tie in with tourism and that distinatonal thing that I mentioned yesterday.

Maybe this was tried, I don’t know. I do know some of the detail re the minor sponsorship between Turkish Airlines and Man Utd and it blows the Dafabet deal away because Utd are Utd.

Celtic have access to global businessmen and their reach and they should think globally. But as I say it is dead easy looking in from the outside and maybe this was done.

There are other routes to follow as well but the above one is what strikes me as most obvious.

    Burnley 78.

Re Res 12 and the best possible outcome? Well this is difficult to answer on a blog but I will give it a go.

Doing nothing was never an option.

What Res 12 seeks to do is to ask a question or two specifically concerning business practices involving the SFA, UEFA and the company that was Rangers PLC.

When you have a situation where HMRC write to another Scottish Football Club and clearly and openly accuse them of ” deliberate failure or fraudulent behaviour” in relation to the submission of their PAYE returns between the years 2000 and 2004 — and that is before any examination of the Big Tax case — and where that allegation is wholly accepted by the football club concerned but is expunged from all disciplinary and procedural processes that are open for inspection by the SFA, then the question that has to be asked is why would you do nothing whatsoever?

In terms of outcome, well again the CFCB rules concerned clearly point to an outcome — in the year concerned (2011) no less than 23 European Clubs were not permitted to take place in European competition because they could not neet the criteria laid down by UEFA in realtion to unpaid social taxes and finances.

What Res 12 seeks to do is to simply ask if the club on the end of the allegations made by HMRC and followed up by them with legal proceedure ( It is important to note that none of this was started by Celtic or any other football club or their fans but by HMRC ) complied with the CFCB rules?

If they did, and it can be explained why and how they did, then the matter is simply over and that is an end of it.

If they didn’t, and all the evidence suggests that they didn’t, knew they didn’t and couldn’t, then why should that club not have suffered the same fate as the 23 other clubs who operated under the same UEFA rules?

If there was an error somewhere, then what steps will the SFA and UEFA take to enure that such an error does not happen again? If there was more than an error — then what steps should UEFA and the SFA take to ensure that history cannot repeat itself in the future?

I am not afraid of being critical of the Celtic board or disagreeing with some steps they take, but by God they are very professional and hugely conservative when it comes to compliance. Their overiding concern is that Celtic will comply and be seen to comply which is good when it comes to licensing proceedures and practice. They are magnificent in this field of business.

But if you have a rival who plays fast and loose with that system, who is not as scrupulous in their declarations and practices and who openly uses that lack of candour to gain or to seek to gain playing and financial advantage whilst publicly exprssing a mantra of “we’ll spend £10 for every £5 you spend” and in so doing adversely influence your share price, your brand value, your goodwill and general standing in your industry — then you don’t stand for that. You don’t stand by and let the competitor walk all over you and your chosen field of play.

You challenge fairly and squarely and question the application of the rules.

Question the rules, question the practices, question the regulatory body, question the individuals who make the decisions and ask them politely “Can you explain this to me? Have you seen this information? Did you know about this and if so when and what did you do about it?”

You ask these questions politely, professionally, objectively and realistically at all times.

If all is above board you will get a satisfactory explanation which you will live with and accept though you will be viewed as a pain in the arse.

If all is not above board you will be lied to, deflected from your line or just ignored unless someone says “Hands up, there was an error there or someone made a mistake” or whatever.

All of that takes time, patience, attention to detail and a whole series of judgement calls which , many people, including your own colleagues, would rather not have to make because it is awkward and as often as not is capable of being interpreted as sour grapes, jealousy, bloody mindedness and just being awkward.

It also takes asking the right questions of the right people in the right order and then showing all of them the conclusion.

What do we hope to achieve?

A fair application of the rules and a recognition that if they were not fairly applied then an acknowledgement of that fact and a review of the processes and proceedures that allowed that to happen.

There may be consequences for others if it is shown that there was wrongdoing but that is not our concern, as that would only come about by way of proper application of the rules if the circumstances justified it.

It is and was always going to be a slow and deliberate process with many a discussion, argument and counter argument on our own side because you have to tread carefully through a proper strategy — and many who are too eager, perhaps even too angry at times, would urge going faster or perhaps taking a step that is neither wise nor necessary and so possibly jeopardise the whole purpose of the enquiry.

Res 12 is not just about Celtic Football Club ( An Aberdeen fan opened up a Res 12 board on the internet yesterday ) it is about being able to go to a game and know — positively know for certain — that the game between any two teams is fair and that the whole set up is neither fixed nor slanted.

If Celtic and its fans play a part in achieving improvement in any or all of the above, succeed in getting answers and persuade a better and perhaps fairer and more open application of the rules then Res 12 will have succeeded beyond its wildest dreams.

However, there is one other additional item that should not be ignored here. The board of a PLC is not the whole PLC. The board are accountable to shareholders and very often a body of shareholders, outwith the board, will have knowledge or expertise which can benefit the company as a whole. That is not something that a board or the shareholders of the company should be afraid of.

The Memo and articles of the company and the companies acts lay down mechanisms and procedures which govern the relationship between boards and shareholders. However, the law, as always, is a course of last resort and a PLC board should always seek to find a management structure which allows full and frank discussion with shareholders so that the board know that in choosing any path or course they will be doing so with the knowledge, backing and best ineterests of the shareholders considered and thought through.

Since the start of Res 12 Celtic PLC have vastly improved their means of communication with groups of shareholders holding more meetings and discussion nights with different groups. It is not perfect, could be improved upon but is is vastly better than what was happening pre 2011/2012.

Other more organised and structured groups have had a bearing on this as well. What Res 12 has proven is that any mixed group of shareholders can come together, organise and find a voice with which to raise an issue which they see as important to the club and to themselves. I would hope that in the future, many issues could be raised and acted upon without the need for a formal resolution at a company meeting.

Until Res 12 many shareholders who have their shares held by Bank of Scotland or by Stockbrokers did not realise that at each and every AGM they automatically voted with the board on every issue because their nominee would send a mandate voting with the board.

By the time we get to the end, whatever that may be, Res 12 will have achieved many things which will hopefully be for the betterment of Celtic shareholders and Celtic Football Club as a whole.

At least, that is what I genuinely believe and I know that many share that view.

  17. AN TEACH SOLAIS…

Thanks for your explanation that you were not attacking P67. I thought that “Wolf in sheep’s clothing” was such. I must have misconstrued.

It was a criticism. A serious one, but one backed up with reasoning. An attack is an attempt to damage – I’m doing quite the opposite – I keep mentioning CQN as being a vital blog. And keep referring to Paul having set a high watermark.

Despite promising a ‘big picture’ op ed we’re getting fed distractions. The press were always going to feature the ‘ha ha 66’ story – and rightly so. It’s hideous.

It’s also foolish to deny that some Celtic fans have previous in regard to the Ibrox disaster. Just as I rail against the FollowFollow mob making fun of Tommy Burns and Johnny Doyle, it’s not anti-celtic to say that some folk embarrass us. Suggesting it’s not a tribal dig is, in my opinion, silly. Trying to deny this, or deny the Mark Walters incident, for example, does us no good. We’d be better to decry this and disassociate ourselves from those people. Running a leader about this being a Level 5 attempt to destabilise the club is tin foil hat wearing stuff. And hiding from the several and serious issues that are *actually* destabilising the club.

To be fair I doubt anyone has been left destitute by indulging in either of those two particular activities.

Thanks for taking the time to explain it. I was aware of most of your points. I totally understand the rationale and energy folk have for pursuing it. I guess I was more concerned as to the ultimate outcome we could best hope for, as far as celtic is concerned, given the hugely ‘imperfect’ world of football governance which exists out there.

I guess winning a res 12 battle vs losing a possible war on some other issue would be the issue which the powers at celtic might be balancing ? Or else it would be a no brainer to pursue.

I suppose non of us mortals has the perfect knowledge of all the facts. I can’t imagine it is being ignored because the board see it as a good thing to ignore ? Or they simply can’t be bothered ?

BRTH – i think Emirates used up their London Road sponsorship budget when the velodrome was built.

Some people are going on wild tangents here. Jimmy Savile? School shootings in America?

Because Celtic have Dafabet on their shirt?

‘In western and developed markets there is little evidence of increased consumption from advertising over the past 20 years.’

    ##

Is there any indication that successive government’s health led initiatives has led to a reduction in consumption?

Could it be that the purpose of advertising/sponsorship is to hold the market at its current level in the face of challenges from the health lobby?

I use Emirates as an example of where the ckub could have gone outwith the drinks and Gambling industries.

I don’t condone the human rights record of the state of Dubai — far from it.

However, when it comes to global brand sponsorship you are not going to find it easy to balance the desired cash and the sought after ethical sponsor esecially if you atre interested in the emrgent markets of the Far East, America, China, India or elsewhere.

You can find fault with newspaper groups ( I often do ), Airlines, TV Companies, Dinks manufacturers ( both alcoholic and non alcoholic ) and so on.

Cars and planes pollute, Foreign manufacturers pay less than a living wage, drinks companies are drinks companies.

The most addicyive substance in the world is Sugar — would a sugar manufacturer be an ethical sponsor?

How about drug manufacturers in the sense of the medical drugs be viewed? Some of them are wholly mercenary and all for profit.

It is a very difficult balance to achoeve.

I hear all your arguments against drink and betting companies and sympathise to an extent.

I spent many years working with those in the alcohol and betting game whilst at the same time working with those who were addicted to both.

The secret to avoiding addiction to anything is not banning or ignoring the items concerned but in educating those at risk against the dangers and the pitfalls, and improving lifestyle generally.

That sounds awfy twee and as if preaching from on high and I don’t mean it to be.

As I said before — very difficult to have a discussion on a blog.
