Anticipated Algarve alarm

159

When Celtic equalised with 20 minutes remaining against Sporting in Algarve yesterday I thought my expectations we would get a hammering was misplaced. Then Sporting obliged with three goals within seven minutes against, what by then, was very much a development Celtic side. The last thing Celtic needed yesterday was a confidence-boosting win, so result; I guess.

Camilo Duran scored on what was his Celtic debut. Goals in these games are immaterial, but forwards always like to put the ball in the net soon after arriving at a new club. It acts as a proof of concept to their new teammates and fans.

Martin O’Neill will inevitably be asked about transfers every time he meets a journalist, fan, friend or relative. His responses will be practiced to confirm processes are in place without actually exchanging any information. That will hopefully change with confirmatory comment soon, until then, there is nothing to see.

  1. Very sporting of Celtic last night , a leisurely run around the park .

I wonder if they paid the old stadium a visit , went all misty eyed , sighed and thought , ah the old days …

  2. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

I’m not taking much comfort that when our WC participants return last night’s team will be unrecognisable from what we’ll see when the competitive stuff starts. I wouldn’t be remotely surprised if AJ, Nygren and Daizen all seek moves. I don’t think the club should stand in their way if that’s the case. The problem is there is zero assurance the club is in a state of readiness to replace them. That’s before adding in Engels and Reo’s likely departures from the first team along with the likes of Bernardo from the squad. Fortunately CalMac looks likely to remain and I am confident Trusty and Yang the same, along with KT and Ralston.

The vista of Pollokshaws Road and Cumberland Street from the Brazen is breathtaking. Or it’s the fumes aff the motors.

What a club! A board who show zero respect to each and every one of us and once again we look at the start of the season with limited enthusiasm or optimism.

Even the game against Middlesbrough this Saturday is going to be an embarrassing turnout. It is a missed opportunity to bring more money into the club if we paraded some new signings and the place had some lift to it. Instead we will be outsung and possibly outnumbered (!) by a modest Championship club. Our name will once again be ridiculed.

Wilson and Nicholson can not be held in lower regard by myself but the board generally are a pathetic excuse for men. Desmond? Just go.

  6. PeterLatchfordsBelly @ 12:13 pm,

On the returning players from the WC, as last season proved we have little strength in depth, so these key first team players are essential…

    Alistair Johnston

    Auston Trusty

    Ralson

    KT

    Yang

    Nygren

    Maeda

    Tounekti

Of course we will certainly lose

    Maeda

    Engels

    Hatate

    Rumours abound for

    Alistair Johnston

    Nygren

If, as we expect, we won’t see Maeda (WBC:) in a Celtic top in anger again – Camilo Duran is already in place.

MO’N knows how important having the quality and experience of Kelechi is to this team and is pressurising the Board to get it done.

So as you intimate, the midfield is where our real issues lie – getting the Ox in was a smart move by Martin, if, as is likely, the calibre of player we lose, will not be replaced by sumilar quality his presence in the squad could be key.

    Hail Hail

  7. “Nothing to see”, aye virtually straight from the horses mouth.

It’s what we will get this window, nothing.

MoN has been asking for reinforcements since the back end of last year, he is still waiting for said reinforcements, what he did get was a mixture of crap loans that were so bad he decided not to play them, we got a couple who he did play and would like to return, but given our recruitment team has already brought in a striker, they need a well earned holiday for all their efforts…….and some say don’t worry, Dearie Me, we are an utter shambles of a club.

  8. I think Kelechi wll wait till near the end of the window to weigh up his options. I expect a lot of transfers after the world cup. Hopefully we have our targets identified and discussions are already taking place. will the Board back O’Neill or will it be more projects. BR gave up on this policy as he was expected to make silk purses out of increasingly sub standard pigs ears.

  9. the Bada Bing on

Phillibuster time with Iheanacho, will drag on IMO, with him moving on,Osmand will sign a new contract and be unveiled as our ‘new striker ‘.This nonsense just shows that absolutely no ground work, scouting, negotiating has been taking place by these useless amateurs running our club, 19 days till 1st league game tells you that.

  10. glendalystonsils on

    Paul67

Of course Martin will be asked about transfers at every opportunity since there’s no information coming from anyone else at the club other than ads for new merchandise lines and friendly tickets for sale .

It’s a sign of understandable fan concern about our state of readiness (or unreadiness) for the season ahead . A concern that’s rooted in recent experience.

Can 2 teams lose the same game? It would be the most flavoursome outcome of tonight’s game in this festival of corruption WC.

  14. I fear it will take us being embarrassed, if not humiliated, over the next few months before we see a proper reaction. The double was brilliant for us as fans but provided a shield for the suits that they did not deserve. DD is too arrogant to listen to the concern of the fans or even the manager and the captain. He thinks our domestic success proves he knows what he is doing. God help us. He is gaslighting all of us.

Pre-season bounce or not, that was a grim watch—thankfully Peter Grant is still the eternal optimist and shameless flatterer – bless him

I still hope we bring in actual quality soon, though we were saying the same thing after BR side beat the same club 2-0 last July.

The quality additions never turned up last summer, nor in January and now it’s bizarre hearing MON parroting BR like a broken voicemail . Same message, same accent . MON in ‘constant touch ‘ with those who bleed green and white..’

There’s still time. We don’t need warm bodies—we need players who can actually play, they cost money, ideally before the inevitable sales. The one thing this outfit seems to manage without self combustion

It’s Iheanacho ‘in talks’ according to MON a free agent and we’d an option to extend, what’s the hold up? If ever there’s a body that needed a pre season he’s it. MON confident players will come in but he doesn’t know names or numbers ?

Nothing to see here – but just look at and buy this new and superfluous replica shirt !

Happy are those who have not seen evidence of proper new signings, and yet believe !

Imagine proper Euro teams – Man U, the Arse etc – saying they’re happy with pre season drubbings,

  18. On players out

Teams were after Engels recently so will be after him again . High chance he goes

Nygren went out the WC fairly early and had one big season. I think he will be off radar

Johnston had a good WC , could be suitors but might be tempted as next Celtic captain. i think he stays

Maeda will definitely go. Wants a challenge and was prominent in knockouts. Off to England

    Players in

as usual, it will be late, hope for a decent draw in CL play off. Good draw last year but the team spirit smelled really bad then – not now

I said League and Cup last season and was right. I’m going League and League Cup this year

  19. I fully expect that all of our players who played in the World Cup will be sold by the Club plus Arne Engels, we are well down the road of being an Auction house similar to the breeze up sales of horses with players brought in who are punts , our right backs are Ralston and Donovan with Tierney as the only left back with Scales as cover, the midfield and forwards are of even more serious concern, how can the support have any faith in the recruiters at the club when you don’t even know who is scouting? Who is in the Football department? Is Celtic a football club first or a listed company first with the spending barriers so severe we would rather pay Corporation tax than spend on signings or improvements to the stadium.?

Anecdotally aside from Celtic Chat, just home from Crosshouse Hospital visiting a ward where my brother in law a good Rainjurz man he was till not long ago.

Speculation was leading to paranoia and in turn frustration sometimes even anger
