When Celtic equalised with 20 minutes remaining against Sporting in Algarve yesterday I thought my expectations we would get a hammering was misplaced. Then Sporting obliged with three goals within seven minutes against, what by then, was very much a development Celtic side. The last thing Celtic needed yesterday was a confidence-boosting win, so result; I guess.
Camilo Duran scored on what was his Celtic debut. Goals in these games are immaterial, but forwards always like to put the ball in the net soon after arriving at a new club. It acts as a proof of concept to their new teammates and fans.
Martin O’Neill will inevitably be asked about transfers every time he meets a journalist, fan, friend or relative. His responses will be practiced to confirm processes are in place without actually exchanging any information. Tuchel switched to 5-3-2 then 5-4-1 too early to defend 1-0 lead. Argentina were already pinging crosses left right and center and shooting from distance.
Manager was too cautious and team were built around athleticism and fitness IMO. Beaten by a 39-year old inspired team who has walked his way through this tournament.
