Anticipation builds

We all thought the title was about to be delivered yesterday, until a late goal at Aberdeen put celebrations on hold.  Celtic can be caught on goal difference.  If we lose our five remaining games by four goals, and Newco win theirs by five goals, we’re done for.  For now, anticipation builds.

It is not clear what games were being played by Brendan Rodgers on Friday, when he told the media that either the players or the manager needs to be changed.  But it was clear he wanted to provoke a reaction in the players, which was there for all to see, for the first half against Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Without Jota or Nicolas Kuhn, and with Greg Taylor back at his best, Celtic got the job done.  Spectacular strikes from Reo Hatate and Cameron Carter-Vickers grabbed the headlines, but the tap-in from Daizen Maeda was a magnificent team goal, while the fourth from Reo Hatate was almost as good.

Viljami Sinisalo was denied a clean sheet by an excellent effort from Danny Armstong.  We’ll give the Kilmarnock player the credit and not suggest his effort was a wayward cross…..

With the job done by the break, the second half had an end of season look to it until Anthony Ralston dropped the shoulder to create space and score in the final minute of the game.

A word on Kilmarnock.  Celtic struggle when teams press them high up the field.  We struggle to progress the ball out of defence and can be forced into losing possession in our final third.  Kilmarnock did not do this.  They are by a margin the worst team to visit Celtic Park this season.  Their six point lead over St Johnstone looks less secure than it should.

We were blessed to have journalists of the calibre of Hugh McIlvanney and John Rafferty when we had a great team and manager whom they greatly regarded.

*John McKenzie had a boat berthed down at Balloch Bridge where the moorings were held by a family of good Donegal stock, his boat was called the “Voice” with a replica of a football on it, my da was pally with the family that owned the boatyard and where cruises up Loch Lomond are particularly popular, anyway John told the clientele there that he often roomed with the Big Mhan when they were abroad, him and Jimmy Sanderson were once barred by john lawrence for criticising their managerial team, in particular for question roger hynd being played at centre forward.
