Anywhere but Warsaw

868

My thought on looking at our potential opponents this morning was ‘Anywhere but Warsaw’.  Our man Zbyszek tells me Legia were awful in the first leg in Warsaw against St Pat’s, where they drew 1-1 courtesy of a late goal, but we’ve been there.  Henrik Larsson & Co. drew 0-0 against St Pat’s at Celtic Park before winning 0-2 in the return leg.  St Patrick’s have a big job ahead if they are to progress.

A trip to Ireland on Champions League qualification duty for the second year running would suit Celtic, especially our Irish-based supporters, but my money is on a more testing trip to Poland; Ronny’s pulse should have quickened on the news.

Zbyszek doesn’t reckon have what it takes to eliminate Celtic. All being equal, that may be the case, but summer football will be unpredictable for both clubs.

I am, of course, being completely disrespectful to KR Reykjavik, who we annihilate next week.

Russia Today? Not the winner in propaganda.

Pyervy Kanal ( First Channel) , most popular TV in Russia informed the country few days back that the Ukrainian solders who came to Slovansk city and beat good men – pro Russian soldiers, crusified 3 years old child. They also tied his mother to the tank. Goebbels was a joker in comparison with Russian media.

The 1950s saw several players emerge as mainstays in the Celtic side, Bobby Evans, Bertie Peacock, Bobby Collins and perhaps most memorably, Charlie Tully. Tully was a charismatic performer who combined audacious dribbling with outright showboating and razor sharp wit. In a Scottish Cup tie in 1953 at Falkirk, Tully scored direct from a corner. The ‘goal’ was disallowed by the referee as the ball had been placed slightly outwith the arc. Tully re-took the corner and swung the ball directly into the net again.[84] Tully became hugely popular with the Celtic support, and ‘Tullymania’ resulted in Glasgow cafes selling ‘Tully ice cream’, bars serving ‘Tully cocktails’ and drapers producing ‘Tully ties’.[85]

You mentioned that game on the phone the other day and I came away wondering how long ago it was.

  7. So dull reading the ramblings of the political evangelists on CQN these days. Nobody’s going to change their mind on the (so-called) “independence” question or whether they are right or left wing. So why the constant self-promotion by these people? I’m guessing they are trolls or attention seekers. Or perhaps they have no self awareness or critical faculties.

    Who cares. Boring.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Celtic and how things might go on Tuesday night?

It wasn’t such a great goal, but being made to take it again and scoring again, made it special for me, in fact it converted me into being a Celtic Supporter, and it’s one of not so many goals that I can remember, the goals in 1967 European cup final is another I’ll never forget.

I do feel it is sad for adults to attempt to impose their political views on their offspring and that Marxism is an ideology that has outlasted whatever usefulness it may have had .

    Beautiful in theory,disastrous in practice.

We have ,in Zbyszek, somebody who has experienced the delights of Soviet imperialism.

I first heard the Charlie Tully corner kick story when about 7-8 from my pal who was a walking Celtic wikipedia even at that age. He also amazed me with the stories about John Thomson and his ability to change direction in mid-air. I was delighted when, after moving in with a lassie from Newarthill, she showed me the delights of Tully’s bar in Motherwell, which was new to me as a weedgie. Spent many an evening in that pub from then on. Sadly gone now I believe.

Just touched me when you mentioned the corner kicks from CT – my brother and me were raised by oor maw who didn’t like the football, and my grandad who took me to the games passed on when I was 5, so my pal always passed on the history to me as he heard it from his own family.

Frantic, congratulations on your great news today. Hamish is lucky to have a good man and Celtic fan as his Granda. I’m chuffed for you.

Anton’s right footed sclaff against the horribles, the week after the St Patrick’s Day Massacre, was great. Anton got a lot of grief from them and for him to score a scrappy goal with his standing foot, made it even better.

Special mention for Naka too as his goal against them in the 2 1 victory in 2008 was a unbelievable strike.

Nothing wrong in wishing St. Pats in the next round.

I’m very busy for three weeks and it’s probably first day I switched the computer on for this time. I normally lurk two or three times a day to see if all are well and what’s going on. I won’t be on the website often, I guess, unless something on my side changes. Regarding the games, I won’t be ofended if people say – get on this mob Legia, or they are poor team, or whatever. It’s sport and you all have the rights to back up Celtic as much as you can. I will be rather on Legia side, my first team.team who I support from my childhood. I won’t be Legia spy here. I won’t be Celtic spy there. If I can do anything to make Legia and Celtic supporters closer, I will do it. If we go through and meet, I hope it’s going to be the biggest football party in Warsaw of all times.

    Natknow,

There are a number of bloggers on here who always come to life when there is a political debate on.

It always amuses me when they get called out or questioned on an ‘on the park’ issue, as it becomes evident they know zilch about football, and , whilst they may have a sympathy towards the hoops, they are not active supporters.

I also suspect that multiple users access one of the ‘blog names’ on here.

Anyway, on Tuesday , I think we will win 4 nil, with one in first half, and I suspect we will play Legia in next round and scrape through.

Also impressed by fact manager hasn’t signed anyone, and hopefully he will do his research on what is required, and who can deliver, before he spends his budget . Contrast this with Mowbray and Barnes, who blew budgets before they saw team play.

Lastly, Friday night is traditionally music night on CQN, so here goes

Hamiltontim, join the club. Goals from about 1976 to the centenary season are more clear to me. This is despite the amount of goals we have scored in the last twenty years which are available on you tube.

Just over fifteen hours to we see a hoops team in action at K Park V East Kilbride FC (not East Kilbride Thistle as quoted on the Celtic web page). It may be the under twenties but the joy of seeing a Hoops team never ends.
