Appoint another mercenary who wins all before him

208

Brendan Rodgers departure midseason was disrespectful to Celtic and still has the potential to disrupt our ambitions for a domestic treble, but I was surprised at the scale of the hostility towards a man many thought could do no wrong just hours earlier.

The timing of his departure was terrible: a day before a league game at Tynecastle and four days before a Cup game at Easter Road, but I am convinced Brendan chose the moment.  He wanted a crack at Valencia (we had a better chance than the aggregate score suggests) and I suspect told Leicester to wait until after that tie was concluded.

I had already factored in that he had been working his ticket since August last year. The public John McGinn tantrum was not matched by any private confrontation.  Whatever he said to Moussa Dembele, that week was more disruptive and the public comments were clearly about an exit route.

Would you or I have left Celtic midseason for a job at Leicester, or anywhere, for £5m a year?  Chances are many of us would remain, at least until the summer, but the truth is that football players and managers move, irrespective of allegiances.  Jock Stein knocked back the Manchester United job to stay at Celtic, but there will always be only one Jock Stein.  We know this reality, so it should never shock.

The Telegraph tells us Leicester paid Celtic a £9m release fee.  Question is, do we want a new manager who is so successful that he moves for a huge wage in 2022, with millions more coming in in compensation that we ever paid him?  Or, do we want different problems in 2022?

It would be a struggle with another mercenary who won all before him, but we would pull through.  Give me an uncompromising, unconscionable, winner, leave badge-tugging antics for the kids to concern themselves with.

I feel that it has significant influence on the activities of the Green Brigade.

And you have often stated so and will continue to do so. All without a single shred of evidence. Can’t catch those dastardly behind-the-scenes Svengalis but we know they’re doing it, don’t we?

  10. Macjay1…there are people in this world that detest us just by us being in it…to further antagonise them is a non statement…to give them an excuse…which they don’t need…is also a non statement…but to judge a whole religion based on the actions of a radical minority* is deplorable…

*There is an arguement that all Muslims that follow the teachings of the Koran…who see the rest of us as Infidel…are all radical….but in realiity we know that’s not the case…we call them moderates…but again that’s just a label…what they are, are reasonable human beings who just want to get on with their lives in peace….

The indiscriminate attacks on a people based on their perceived religious beliefs always has to be condemned…

Anti capatilist is not a bad thing in the feral world of the shareholder,in the desmoondo44% world it means nowt.it is tho I observe a useful tool for yourself to bash those reds lol))

They used to admit to requiring a supporter on the Board , although they`ve gone quiet on that recently .

(( Yeh,but seats on board usually migrate to shareholding, say someone like Nick Train/Michael lindsell who recently increased their steak in our club to 18.45% ,I would say they would be more apt than the Celtic trust whose % holding is minute by comparison.))

Interfering in the business interests of Celtic by insisting on ” a living wage “.

(( And why not Macjay, imagine that pride you have that the club pay it’s weakest/lowest paid a wage they can live on. I am glad the club got pressured into this? Why?- because we are Celtic and should be leading from the front.”business interests” in the case of Celtic means conscience Macjay, even Dermot knows that.

    None of their business.

    Nonsense on 2 fronts-

    1Celtic affects non shareholders

Chairbhoy…what do you expect when you recruit business people first…and I appreciate that they’re conducting their roles very well in that department…but it’s ,to my mind, the detriment of the football department.

MIKE IN TORONTO @ 9:10 PM,

I have mentioned EVDS from Ajax… former keeper, with an MBA from Harvard…

In America, Michael Winograd ran for president of US football, I think … former pro player, GM and lawyer … surely, there must be a few like him in Europe

Well, yes, it would seem that non-football men are involved in making important footballing decisions, including strategy and either getting it wrong from the outset or through implementation.

MIT – Didn’t have a chance to look up your guys but I will. These are exactly the type of people we need to hire to work out or football strategy, to oversee the implementation and to provide continuity when, players, coaches, specialists and managers move on.

    SFtB’s @ 9:07 PM

“But Board Members, Directors, seriously, why do current Celtic supporters give adulation to the Board.”

Can you cite any instances of this?

Well it’s kind of ubiquitous as TET mentions but after the results to June 2018 were announced I myself praised the Board highly.

It has become apparent to me, and my suspicions were raised some years ago. That this Board has failed to build on football success as being risk averse and making money by picking the low hanging fruit.

We reached another peak in June 2018 and have gone backwards since.

    STEPHBHOY @ 10:25 PM

I often hear/ see guys talking about lennoxtown football centre and how it under proformances. Thing is lennoxtown football centre is not for academy players it is in The main a centre used for The fulltime professionals at The club. The kids still train at barrowfield in The main.

There is a good youth structure in place and We have combined The school & academy in The last 6 or so years. Bhoys like henderson, johnstone, dembele etc… Are The product of that structure. The academy is a long term product.

We have a good academy but like all others most of The kids will not make it with us. That is normal. If We can get one first term squad player every 2 years from The academy We will be doing very well.

Right now We have Forrest, calmac, K.T, Ralston, Johnstone and henderson in and around The first team. We have kids like dembele, oxo-flex, atchison and a few more showing real promise. The academy has paid for itself many times over on The pitch and in The bank balance.

Its almost impossible to Plan on your manager walking out or not proforming as youth expect and The same goes for players. succession Planning would make it easier to forward Plan in The football department but supporters always demand top names, Same with The player situation, supporters always demand money is spent, which often Forrest The club to look outwith Its own ranks.

P.s. Gamboa and toljan were preferred to Ralston and would cost a lot more, but Ralston has shown more.

Well that’s very interesting, I know the Lennoxtown facility is primarily used as a training complex these days. I also understood that Barrowfield was being upgraded but did not realise the youths were still there.

You are correct when you say we are doing well if we get one first team player every two years, a rate not dissimilar to Barrowfield through the years.

The fact is we need three first team players a Season graduating from the Academy.

Our last manager has run a first teir Academy and arguably did more for our graduate, current and future Academy players than anyone – point is it can be done.

This is exactly what I’m talking about regarding strategy and implementation.

When we were looking to build the Academy Tommy Burns went through a rigorous fact finding mission and was heavily involved in the process, being in charge of the Academy when it opened.

No from memory, he kept that position but was also made first team assistant manager… hardly a part time role.

We have missed many a good Scottish player that has gone to England and the progress our in house ghuys made under BR is testament that we can improve.

We just need to get much, much better at doing this sort of thing a Director/Head if Football is a must!!

    Hail Hail

    HH

  30. Celtic sell all our best players and KT falls into that grouping. we are watching one of our own develop into a special player and he has given us 4 great years to date. If and its a big If, celtic are offered anything above 25 million KT will be allowed to talk to the bidding team. KT will leave us one day and i hope we offer our thanks for his contribution, a class act.

Our approach to signing young players and promoting academy players is built on kids being given opportunity to fulfil thier potential, that only comes if they can get game time at first team level. The ability to repeat over and over again will slowly but surely make our club more attractive to The best young players available which will be good for The club and The players and ourselves.

Glasgow city council’s decision re: screen outside the celtic way seems to point to double standards. I can see a half decent solicitor taking the reason for that decision to peices and getting decision overturned.

  32. An Tearmann,

Nice to meet you again on Saturday,

I reckon that it best to make judgement on one’s character based on your own personal experience, not on someone else ‘s opinion and based upon the intrinsic value of what they are trying to achieve at any given time.

I don’t know Macjay and only know HT and Minx on passing acquaintance basis.

I make no comment on Macjay but roundly applaud the hard work of HT and Minx in making the An Gorta Mor collection happen.

To my mind they were trying to achieve a good cause, therefore I offered my assistance.

I am not involved with HT and Minx in any Celtic Trust issues, if indeed they are.

I believe a lot of problems stem from people attributing their own bias upon others and often citing unknown motivations upon others who hold a differing viewpoint.

The whole pro board, pro PL argument ,or even Brendan Rodgers leaving, are cases in point.

There is no debate, only largely entrenched viewpoints unwilling to contemplate an alternative viewpoint.

Brendan Rodgers was excellent for Celtic as a manager who delivered 7 put of 7 trophies.

He is also,IMO, the narcissist who walked on Celtic to further his own bankbook, caring little for effect his action would be on the club. To hold such differing viewpoints is not mutually exclusive.

I’m sure PL does lots of very good things to the benefit of Celtic. I’m equally sure that he is guilty of making some costly mistakes.

One should be wary of attributing their own belief of the motivation of others, without having absolute knowledge of such.
