You remember the days we used to bang on about Asset Management? The Martin O’Neill was glorious but that team left with barely a dowry. Great players were kept on ever-increasing wages, some until they could scarcely run the length of themselves. Tales of John Hartson’s bleep test live in the memory!
This was unquestionable folly. Celtic lost money each season under Martin (and Gordon Strachan), debt rose ever-higher, while the background noise was an incessant call to spend more money. The early days of CQN saw demands to show the kind of ambition Sir David Murray did at Rangers, or for Dermot Desmond to donate cash, by some who had confused Celtic’s charitable ethos with being a charity case.
A successful trading strategy is crucial for any club to achieve its potential. Keep them on wages you can afford and sell them to a wealthier market when you cannot get them to extend their contract.
All of those great goals from Stuart Armstrong, the Cup Final equaliser, all those trophies he won, cost the club zero. Absolutely nothing. His transfer fee to Dundee United and entire wage bill was more than covered by the fee from Southampton. In fact, we made a profit, which is available for us to kick on with.
There were two alternatives:
Let him leave without compensation next year. Celtic would be busy looking for a replacement as Stuart’s agent would be shopping him around. And there would be no money to reinvest.
Or, break the wage structure to match what he can get in England. And even then, he might still fancy a the chance in England. There are some players worth breaking the wage structure for, but with all due respect to Stuart, you can only do it for an unequivocal first choice.
More important than the money, Celtic cannot stagnate. There are lots of reasons to feel good about our general domestic brilliance, but your football club regards itself as a Champions League operation. On that front, we have plenty of room for improvement.
Just as there are limits to our wage bill, there are practical limits to the squad size. We need to churn those on the fringes and try to replace them with players who will become un-droppable.
Best of luck at our benefactor-by-the-sea, Stuart. I hope you are a huge success.

Delighted for the fans especially Dena and crew who miss out on so much because of times to suit the TV companies.
Mike in TO,
I agree with your views on the SFA inquiry, sadly. Does that make it at least two grumpy old men?
However, I have a glimmer of hope that something worthwhile will come out of it….if only to provide some satisfaction to the Resolutioners.

Thanks.
Pretty much why I don’t like these things discussed on the open forum and why suggested otherwise.
Words are often misconstrued or ambiguous or just inaccurate.
MiT, RiO….
add me to that list of grumpy auld men!!

All excited for a minute there…. thought I was finally in my first CQN clique ….the grumpy old men clique….
but, then realized that, with the exception of Dena (who is neither grumpy nor a man), we are all pretty much grumpy old men on here … just pro-board grumpy, or anti-board grumpy, but old and grumpy nonetheless ….
oh well, I will continue to live in hope that I finally make it into a CQN clique.
:)
Flag day not on the telly then….

MiT @ 2:44,
In the light of Auldheid’s reply to Paul’s piece yesterday and BRH&T’s comments – it was interesting to read E-Tims take…
http://etims.net/?p=13104
And Joe McHugh’s take…
https://videocelts.com/2018/06/blogs/latest-news/operation-blame-whyte-underway/
You of course may think this is s case for Paul67…
Now as Craig Whyte’s self appointed Devil’s Advocate I’d like to take it upon myself to make a few observations…
When Rangers FC applied for a licence to play in Europe in 2011/12 they had in 2010 a contrivance of circumstances that meant they had some very, very serious issues…
These circumstances included:
UEFA had just got very serious about their Licencing protocol and FFP
HMRC had just won a landmark “Tax Case” against Aberdeen A.M.
Rangers were extremely vulnerable on this Tax Case*, you see, they had denied the existence of side letters to their player’s contracts – due to a raid on Ibrox by the English Police these non existent side letters were in HRMC’s hands
*Q. Where does tax avoidance become tax evasion become fraud!?
The Bank of Scotland, who had historically been very, very good to Rangers FC had gone bust, the UK Government, decided to “save it” by handing this poison quaich to Lloyds TSB, Now, they had to sup from this cup but by no means were they going to slug to whole thing down… Rangers FC would be treated as a “normal” creditor – they wanted the money back
Rangers were IN effect bust, they had some very serious liabilities and even more serious potential liabilities (see above + BTC), SDM had to sell the Club before it disintegrated in his hands.
We of course more or less know this… this is the Circumstances in which the Board of MIH and Rangers FC PLC after many Seasons of looking for a buyer without success had to find a pasty, they had played literally every shot of the dice.
No need to go into detail, though recently Auldhied did an excellent blog on E-tims
http://etims.net/?p=13042
This gives a clear and unequivocal insight into the m.o. of the SFA. They had their scapegoat and gave him a public hanged him.
Let’s get to the point…….;)
IF the SFA are true and proper about going into the investigation of the issuance of Rangers FC they MUST do this…
Forget about CW as pasty, that ship had sailed… good one though;)
They must present ALL the evidence to the Judicial Panel without fear or favour.
The independent panel must make up there own minds without – restricting evidence…
The period to consider for instance…
Are they really; after stunting the SFA LNS Inquiry from 06-May-2011 (which excludes SDMs regieme), stunting the SPL LNS Commission to 2000 (which excludes the documentation from DOS), really, really try for a three card trick!!!
Are the SFA really going to reduce the time period and scale of the evidence that has made a mockery of their Judicial process and try it again!!!
Is the compliance officer going to present “Evidence” that excludes the HUGE RAFT (that was a word the SFA JDTP used to diminish CW’s right and proper request for disclosure) OF EVIDENCE…
…AGAIN!!!
…SERIOUSLY!!!
MiT are they going to get away with it again, beggars belief.
Third time VERY unlucky…
As a wiser man than I once screamed “IS THERE A LAWYER IN THE HOUSE!!”
Hail Hail
Sweden 1 up. Great stuff. I hope, for Lustig’s sake, they go through. Very unlucky against the Germans.
AC Milan banned from Europe for 2 years for breach of FFP and Club Licensing rules
Celtic Football Club,a club run by Snobs I mean look at the prices for Hospitality Suites,4 star treatment, the ordinary fan ,who pay plenty for a season ticket, get the usual , Pies Tea Bovril, etc, served up in a dookit, well in the area were I have my seat.in the front of the main Stand,a club for all,aye if you are loaded,A Working man’s game,I that will be right, took over by a bunch of Middle Class people.
All the best to Stuart Armstrong. There is no point in trying to persuade a player to stay if his hearts not in it. He took his time re signing last season but it seems to have worked out better for Celtic.
A fair price seems to have been agreed. Add ons could increase the amount and surely a sell on clause will have been written into the deal which could potentially bring in more if he performs well down there.
All in all it looks like a good deal for us and I wish him all the best in the future. They can have the song as well. Too cringy in my humble opinion ?
Gary….Never catch on here mate. ?
If Germany score theres three teams on 6 pts, does it go to head to head record? ie Sweden out?
HH
England commentators sorry I mean the BBC ones are on the Helium again.
3-0 Sweden.
Trad…Not head to head mate I think, anyway Sweeds would be ahead of the Mexicans if it was.
