Armstrong, Convicted Dave, playing with fire

1051

News that we are after a second Dundee United midfield player will prove popular, Stuart Armstrong has been tipped for progress for a couple of years.  He is another Ronny Deila-type player, a strong runner who can get up and down the field.  As usual, I’ll reserve judgement until we sign him, and I’ve had a chance to watch him properly.

You have to admire his balls.  Dave King assertion that a conviction for tax fraud is a “favourable settlement” goes beyond parody.  I’m unsure if some PR flop put those words in his head or if he concocted the notion by himself, but just as you cannot shine a turd, it is impossible to spin an undisputed criminal conviction.  He was convicted of criminal offenses.  If this is your measure of favourable, your standards are truly deplorable.

I fail to see why King even is discussing such matters with the media, unless he’s currying favour with the Daily Record.  These assertions will make no difference whatsoever to the stock market, or any reputable nominated adviser, nor will it hold sway with the SFA.  It is also a futile battleground.  In the event King gains control of newco Rangers, he doesn’t need to be a director to exercise de facto control, Paul Murray has been his man for years.  Mike Ashley is not a director, and he owns less than 9% of the club, but he appears to be able to dictate play quite comfortably.

Without a trace of irony, King told the Record: “The enthusiasm that this board adopts to ‘media management’ and its failure to act in the interest of shareholders and other stakeholders is exactly why they should be jettisoned”.

Trying hard to avoid the merest whiff of media management himself, King then added, “History will judge this board as one of the worst the club has ever had. There is not one individual who puts the club above personal interest.”

There you have it folks, our pal Dave is a man you can trust.

Just as the Newco board didn’t have enough on their plate, interim manager Kenny McDowell tendered his notice, although in true ‘Rangers’ tradition, he’s not going without a pay-off.  It’s an added vote of no confidence the regime could do without.  They now face the embarrassing prospect of allowing an interim to remain in control as a lame duck, or put a second manager on gardening leave.

Mike Ashley’s prospects of a successful turnaround look bleak in the face of such uniform and orchestrated antagonism.  I wonder if he’s the kind of man who takes manipulation lightly?  If not, the manipulators are playing with fire.

“Good article” my erchie ….. Mr Spiers is simply preparing us for the inevitable / corrupt acceptance of ming as a fit and proper person … won’t work, though, since the SFA need to be seen, contractually, to be protecting the fabric / reputation / integrity of the Game …. It is their duty….HH

Have to disagree.I think its a very good article, from a guy who over the years has said a fair bit against the hordes. This puts the spotlight on the SFA in no uncertain terms. The SFA panel, including PL.If they find no cause to bar King then the game is truly over, and we will then see where PL is coming from.

If more journalists would print the same facts, pressure would grow.

The Easdale brother has no seat on the Hun board because of his conviction.

    —————————————————————-

Your last line hits the nail on the head – that is the reason why Easdale is not on the board – at least as I understand it. However, we would not be in the slightest bit surprised if King were accepted by the SFA as being an appropriate person, would we? I thought the GS article was fine but he misses one crucial point – the “rules” arn’t rules as you and I understand them. The “rules” are maleable and will be squeezed and pushed to suit whatever today’s agenda is. Like my daughter and her Play Dough machine…

Btw,no problem with Biton or Ambrose, but having too close a relationship with one agent-particularly one who deals largely in,with respect,a minor league is not healthy. IMO,of course.

  6. Morning All.

Sometimes its interesting to see how others ( fellow tims) view us.

There is a thread on the Huddleboard regarding the advert in the Herald.

The advert commented on is not the final draft , however the reaction

to any advert seems to be an overwhelming negative.

CQN posters such as Estadio who were critical seemed to be in the

minority, but if the Huddleboard ( Celtics largest on line community, with

entry only given by recommendation of a fellow Tim ) is a barometer of

    opinion then its certainly divided.

    This will achieve nothing.

The chattering class of CQN need a re think.

The chattering profesionals on CQN who hate the huns more than

    they love Celtic should reconsider.

Among the 3 pages of the thread there are those in favour.

They are though in the minority.

The advert will not be an agreement ” love in” within the support.

The fact that half of any money contributed by CQN went to

charity seems to have been missed.

For the record I personally contributed due to a total frustration with

what IMO is propaganda in the media. Any small step to challenge

the lazy reporting while giving to charity was ok by moi.

If anyone on here thinks the advert will only anger the establishment

or those who fell for Charles Green,s selling techniques think again. HH

I listened to that interview. The Hamilton chairman was asked about the fact that Hamilton are going to charge 10 pence at the gate for the next game against Partick Thistle. The Snyde presenter rather than acknowledging that it was a great idea and leaving it at that said that he presumed the club would be hoping that they would make a lot more on the catering and hospitality due to the expected larger crowd. The Hamilton chairman rounded on him and said that this was the cynical type comment he now expects from the media and that it was stupid to suggest such a thing.

    He was quite angry !

now as far as I remember HIBS did not finish second or were never runners-up in any cup competition.so no gain there for HIBS if titles were surrendered.

I’d be more inclined to read a paper with a columnist dedicated to RIFC eg Spiers where you know his leanings but is prepared to critcise when it’s deserved. Provided of course it’s balanced by a Celtic correspondant of a similar nature. Jim Spence for Tayside. Michael Stewart for Edinburgh. Richard Gordon for Aberdeen. That kind of thing would probably work for me. Everybody’s writer’s allegiances known and able to be taken into account when reading their outpouring. Nobody pretending to be something they’re not.

    ————-

I agree to a certain point, if only because I think Gordon, Spence and Stewart are pretty good pundits. But I think we have to get away from journalists giving ‘the Celtic view’ or the Sevco view, because it only fuels the petty debates about the ‘agenda’ some person has.

Graham Spiers has hailed as a hero on here when he finally broke from the party line and criticised Murray and Rangers fans. But when he criticises our fans, or our club, suddenly he goes from being the only journalist with integrity prepared to speak the truth, to going downhill or trying balance things out to appease the hordes. Pretty similar situation with Stewart as well.

Pundits like Johnstone and Hateley are embarrassments, it pains them to say anything negative about their club, so there is no objectivity. Yet ex-Celtic players who have a go at Celtic are decried for selling out to the MSM, for taking the blue pound. Not to say I agree with them, I think Hartson and Sutton for example have been awful this season, great Celts but awful pundits, but I don’t want someone who’s going to defend the club no matter what.

People are so precious. Look at the abuse Lenny took on here for joking about Efe’s crossing ability at the WC. We have to get away from the mentality of he supports team x, therefore this is the view from the team x side, because we’re all individuals and the spectrum of opinions is too broad.

I don’t care what team they support. I want pundits to be fair and objective, balanced in their praise or critique. If that leaves a group of pundits that didn’t include a Celtic fan then so be it. It really isn’t that important.

  21. Angel Gabriel – exactly the point I made over the last week or so – this advert is a puerile scam.

The usual suspects on here who have concocted this embarrassment, also berate Celtic for not providing a almost daily running commentary on the Ibrox farce.

I tried to point out to them that getting down in the gutter with The Rangers will be counter-productive – I was, and still am, personally attacked by this pernicious clique.

  22. JonnyRambo67

I have never been one to get excited about what pundits say. It’s up to them really.

Everyone has their own view of the incidents. Before regular live matches and widespread highlights people could be brainwashed by a journos views. It’s pretty hard to do that now. Any ex Celtic player who gives constructive criticism of Celtic is not saying anything different from a large group of Celtic fans on message boards across the internet.

These guys are paid to be controversial. Burley went way too far. If you are ex Rangers it is a shoe in for a job. Just turn up! Doubt that will ever change.

  24. I wonder whether Ashley is using The Rangers to see how far he can go without getting into hot water with the footballing authorities. He knows that a club with Rangers in its name gets more latitude than any other, and wants to set a precedent.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see him approach other hard up clubs, probably n the English lower leagues, and do deals to take merchandising off their hands. After all, a few shares and a deal for strips in a second club after NUFC is ok, so why not a third, a fourth?
