Armstrong, Convicted Dave, playing with fire

1051

News that we are after a second Dundee United midfield player will prove popular, Stuart Armstrong has been tipped for progress for a couple of years.  He is another Ronny Deila-type player, a strong runner who can get up and down the field.  As usual, I’ll reserve judgement until we sign him, and I’ve had a chance to watch him properly.

You have to admire his balls.  Dave King assertion that a conviction for tax fraud is a “favourable settlement” goes beyond parody.  I’m unsure if some PR flop put those words in his head or if he concocted the notion by himself, but just as you cannot shine a turd, it is impossible to spin an undisputed criminal conviction.  He was convicted of criminal offenses.  If this is your measure of favourable, your standards are truly deplorable.

I fail to see why King even is discussing such matters with the media, unless he’s currying favour with the Daily Record.  These assertions will make no difference whatsoever to the stock market, or any reputable nominated adviser, nor will it hold sway with the SFA.  It is also a futile battleground.  In the event King gains control of newco Rangers, he doesn’t need to be a director to exercise de facto control, Paul Murray has been his man for years.  Mike Ashley is not a director, and he owns less than 9% of the club, but he appears to be able to dictate play quite comfortably.

Without a trace of irony, King told the Record: “The enthusiasm that this board adopts to ‘media management’ and its failure to act in the interest of shareholders and other stakeholders is exactly why they should be jettisoned”.

Trying hard to avoid the merest whiff of media management himself, King then added, “History will judge this board as one of the worst the club has ever had. There is not one individual who puts the club above personal interest.”

There you have it folks, our pal Dave is a man you can trust.

Just as the Newco board didn’t have enough on their plate, interim manager Kenny McDowell tendered his notice, although in true ‘Rangers’ tradition, he’s not going without a pay-off.  It’s an added vote of no confidence the regime could do without.  They now face the embarrassing prospect of allowing an interim to remain in control as a lame duck, or put a second manager on gardening leave.

Mike Ashley’s prospects of a successful turnaround look bleak in the face of such uniform and orchestrated antagonism.  I wonder if he’s the kind of man who takes manipulation lightly?  If not, the manipulators are playing with fire.

  1. Dear Ole Kojo

I think when someone such as yer goodself is so assertive about the

positives or negatives of many a Celt………as you ur. (copyright yersel).

Then you must expect your report card to be marked. No??

This of course should be done in the most courteous manner.

By the way how is Mr Kayal these days?

    H.H.

  2. Nir Bitton has the makings of a good modern midfield player for me. He always finds space, rather than standing watching the man with the ball as too many players do. He keeps it simple and retains possession well.

Like a few from abroad I think he has been surprised by the agricultural nature of midfield play in Scotland. As others have said, he needs to impose himself a bit more at times- he is a big lad and needs to learn to use his physique more.

  3. Shaun Maloney a fine footballer but too injury prone. You have to be an Xavi or Iniesta with those lightning reflexes to avoid getting kicked.

Masty and Tom,just looking in on your conversations

So many good young players nearly make it to play at a decent and/ or top level and then a simple twist of fate sees them drop out or drop down the leagues,

It really is a tough sport to succeed in. And when you do establish yourself you get experts like us shouting” rubbish” and “get him off, every time you make a mistake,

    Glad I never went pro☺☺☺

    Dear oh dear.

Where did I say I was a victim? Victim of what?

For the record, I didn’t see your comment until days later. But even if I did, I didn’t know responding and having a debate with you was compulsory.

    Very childish.

  6. If we get in Armstrong and GMS I assume they will be cup tied for both dosmestic cups – so we will still need Henderson etc. Squad game.

    Re Biton

Great players create this allusion, e.g Beckenbaur, Connelly, Dalglish, Lubo.

You cant seriously compare him to the above

It’s not a comparison, it is recognition of something they have in common, which illustrates their football brain and intelligence.

  10. WITS –

    Good post.

When I was watching my sons progress through the Edinburgh Youth Leagues, I saw many wonderful young players who had talent in abundance. It’s when they hit the late teens that a lot of them fall by the wayside, either through losing interest, other distractions, or simply not developing as expected.

One notable example looked like a world-beater from the age of 10 and at 14 he had all manner of clubs offering him facilities. Currently he is serving a lengthy sentence in Saughton for drug-dealing.

  11. Was Karma supposed to be funny ?

Last Friday was bad enough but that interview on Sky really takes the biscuit.

If Armstrong signs I will be pleasantly surprised. Bitton is certainly a good passer of the ball but is yet to show me the physical aspect of his game. Like or not this is a requirement unless out of the real top drawer which he isn’t.

    Good player yes.

One who may hopefully progress to the top drawer is Liam Henderson.

This bhoy has every attribute required for the modern midfielder. At only 18 I think we’re looking at a future captain of Celtic.

I hope Ronny shares the same opinion.

I really think you are way off the mark

This is Bitons 3rd season at celtic ( I think, correct if I am wrong) and he has yet to establish himself as a first team regular ( maybe in recent weeks he has done so). To me that would indicate that celtic have gone backwards since he arrived . He was a fringe player and is now the man.

If I played against the under 9s I would be the best player on the pitch but it should not earn me comparisons with Beckenbauer et al

    Tom

There was a story on my neighbourhood in Dublin back in the 70s of a very good local player who got a trial with arsenal but was thrown out when he was found going through pockets in the dressing room.

But apart from stories like that the risk of injury, burn out, home sickness, falling out with a coach, etc are so great that those that finally make it to a professional career really have to be admired for their perseverance

What is the stars. Biton had to settle in a new country he also has suffered through injury for me he showed his class from the very beginning but it is only recently that he has been completely injury free. For me he has to be given an extended run in the team and I am sure he will shine. H.H.

  19. mike in toronto on

re: biton. He wasn’t favoured by our prior managers, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a good player. some people prefer a more robust style ofplay, while others prefer a more thinking man’s type of player. Sometimes, your face just doesn’t fit. Sometimes, you aren’t the right style of player for the game the coach wants to play …

but that is in the past. What is important is that, at the moment, we have a coach whose avowed style of play seems to be suited to, and bring out the best in, NB.

It seems RD likes constant motion types of players, which NB does not give the appearance of being. However, (i) because of his languid style, he moves more than one would think, and (ii) more importantly, he keeps the ball moving.

Further, as JFH points out, some players take a bit of time to settle in a new country/new team. I think of Stan Petrov, and how good he turned out to be. I think NB could be an even better player for us than Stan.

Given your definition of what a midfielder should offer did you rate iniesta, xavi or scholes?

And do you think every midfielder should possess all of your stated characteristics?

  21. Bitton is a great player. Perfect for European Fitba. Rarely misplaces a pass.

Liam was likened to Paul McStay by his youth coaches.

Plays with his head up, sees a pass, can score and can tackle.

To me he has all the ingredients to be a great Celtic player and potential captain.

A boy I played street Football with back in Motherwell also signed for the Gunners. He was an unbelievable talent and was travelling with the first team at 17 for the experience, until he turned up pished one morning. He was sent home and suspended for a fortnight. When they asked him to come back, he told them to take a hike. He never kicked a ball in earnest again and died in his 30s after years of chronic alcoholism. Apparently he was an alcoholic after taking his first pint.
