Armstrong deal good portent for Celtic signings

334

The mood around Celtic Park was a bit sombre when Virgil van Dijk was scouted by Southampton.  Virgil looked like he was scared to break a fingernail in the capitulation against Legia Warsaw; we lost out on Champions League qualification, although the player was heading south anyway.

With Stuart Armstrong being measured for a red and white outfit, there is significantly less stress at Celtic.  Stuart delivered for Celtic during his three years at the club, but he left unable to command a regular starting place in the team.  We are selling a fringe player who has one season left on his contract for a fee which reflects the inflated English transfer market.

Celtic have managed this playing asset very well.  Consequently, they have more money available to invest in the team.  It is also worth noting that we could have sold the player a year ago, but resisted as Brendan Rodgers did not have back fill.  The manager has been preparing for this scenario since.  This should be an enjoyable summer for the Celtic support.

Glad you were able to get safely home.

That was outrageous what was going on in Leeds yesterday and the Police action/inaction appeared to make it worse, certainly for the likes of yourself.

    Hail Hail

  2. diappointed to see armstrong go. when fit i thought he was a very geed midfielder especially going foeward.

    cant blame him for 40kw.

  3. Obviously the “article” about Celtic’s financial problems is nonsense, but a serious question. With the amount of inside information/bloggers/rumours could Celtic get into financial difficulty without us finding out? Can you hide that kind of mismanagement, especially with a press looking for any hint of a negative story?

i’m glad to see you posting, as there was a “suggestion” on here a few days ago, that you MAY have taken umbrage with my earlier Rant in relation to that Chump BP and his make believe talking Dugs ?

I did post and wished you and wee “Seamus” well etc, and I also offered up an explanation that in NO WAY was my rant about talking Dugs was dircted at you or anyone else, but that it was soley directed at the afore mentioned Chump.

I hope this clears matters ? Yes I did read your post about my ” Geratric Dalliances”, but I of course took it as a bit of banter.

    Hail Hail.

Tim- I have been told a few of our guys are on 30k a week plus, 40k a week in EPL is about the average age.

  7. Players come and go and we’ve had a year knowing that Stuart Armstrong would go. He did offer something different from our other midfielders, mainly pace. He’s hardly irreplaceable. The only player who would leave me upset if he left is KT (Scott Brown aside, who we know will retire a Celt). I’m still hopeful of bringing in another two who would walk right into the first team. Every team needs a wee bit of churn and while it’s good for us to maintain a strong core, it’s imperative to add some new blood.

  8. Expect amstrong to do ok down the road and i wish him luck. His preformances for us were a mixed bag and if reports are to be believed boyata may be following him out the door and His preformances are of the same variety to date.

mcginn is not my cup of tea, lots of energy combined with little game control or technique, but i Would be happy to be proven wrong if we do sign him.

No player should be allowed to leave under freedom of contract if possible, its not good management its common sense.

Also not keen on bringing anyone in who is not better than what we have because we have enough projects

  9. Armstrong will apparently get 5% of the transfer fee as per his contract agreed last summer. A tidy signing on fee and £40k a week will make him a rich man.

If it’s true that he gets 5%, makes you wonder if that is Pedro’s latest trick to incentivise players to drive up their value.

  10. Some comments about Leeds. Most people in the old Yorkshire mining areas are very friendly. Leeds city centre mind you, make Glasgow look positively genteel and that’s just the wummin :)

Although Celtic probably control what goes into public domain with our signings/players thrh cant when a player moves on.

Yeah I was keeping a very close eye on Pele and Bremner in that game. Think it was one of BBs early caps .He was told to shadow the great man. I have never before or since seen such a man-marking job (and neither had Pele). I dont recall Bremner over-doing the fouling he just stuck to Pele like glue for the whole 90mins and never allowed Pele a sniff of the ball. And he rounded off his performance by skilfully dummying the Brazilian. Billy Bremner was an awesome player with a never-say-die attitude . Wish he had been in the hoops.

  15. Haven’t & won’t read the offending article from the pawn of the darkside…but from those who have & commented..

This paraphrasing of a great put down might apply…

“Davies Left Peg post merits reading as the quintessential Davies Left Peg, leaping from nonexistent fact to blanket ad hominem without even a pause for a reality check.”

A good quote that has multiple applications if you insert your preferred stenographer/ club chairman/ Level5 person’s name.

    ……………

As for the departing Stuart Armstrong – I wish him well & believe he’ll be a success wherever he goes because his attitude, fitness and football brain is better than most players’.

He will also be a success off the field for pretty much the same reasons & as others have said he is undoubtedly a good man.

Morroccans feeling aggrieved about their bookings. Personally, I think they were meritted but I think Spain (Ramos?) might have been red carded in the opening minutes for a 2 footed lunge which he got away with. Spain’s defence is pretty poor. Boyatta would shine in it.

  18. PCS

It was Pique, if fairness to him he got the ball and yer man made a meal of it, he was hardly touched, but I agree some refs would have taken a harsher view.

Morocco have some very decent players, I also didn’t realise that they have only ever played each other twice, they are trying to rile the Spaniards.

I haven’t a clue what the Spanish commentator is saying but the excitement in his voice at every attack is really entertaining.
