Armstrong deal good portent for Celtic signings

334

The mood around Celtic Park was a bit sombre when Virgil van Dijk was scouted by Southampton.  Virgil looked like he was scared to break a fingernail in the capitulation against Legia Warsaw; we lost out on Champions League qualification, although the player was heading south anyway.

With Stuart Armstrong being measured for a red and white outfit, there is significantly less stress at Celtic.  Stuart delivered for Celtic during his three years at the club, but he left unable to command a regular starting place in the team.  We are selling a fringe player who has one season left on his contract for a fee which reflects the inflated English transfer market.

Celtic have managed this playing asset very well.  Consequently, they have more money available to invest in the team.  It is also worth noting that we could have sold the player a year ago, but resisted as Brendan Rodgers did not have back fill.  The manager has been preparing for this scenario since.  This should be an enjoyable summer for the Celtic support.

Think you are wrong there ?

One investigative bastion has gone on the offensive taking the accused’s stance and allowing them a voice.

    ==========================================================

The SFA will decide on their next step tonight in their ongoing row with Rangers over the award of a UEFA licence.

A meeting, described as “procedural” will take place at Hampden in the aftermath of a notice of complaint issued by compliance officer Timmy McGlennan last month.

SFA chiefs decided Rangers have a case to answer over their application in 2011 for a UEFA licence to play in Europe that year.

Rangers subsequently hit out at the SFA over McGlennan’s notice of complaint and claimed football is being directed by officials daring to do their job and intent on harming the biggest, bestest part of the Scottish game.”

Two charges were levelled against the still the same club, who responded before the May 22 deadline to vigorously take the fight to whoever these people are and defend our position.

A meeting was scheduled for today in which the claims of both sides are expected to be considered in more detail.

Points of procedure and how any such case may be taken forward will also be up for discussion, although both sides declined to comment last night.

One, still the same source, but definitely NOT one of the “sides” said: “No significant decisions are expected to be made at this stage.”

Celtic do not want such a player. Some fans unable to grasp Brendan’s style of defending do.

  4. Turkeybhoy on 26th June 2018 10:19 am

Would prefer John Terry but Huth would be a decent signing as well. Experienced and good organizer, he even made Wes Morgan look good winning season.

I think we’ll only sign a centre half if Boyata leaves, we have 6 at the moment if you include Bitton as a CH.

Why would Celtic pay such amounts, with no return on the outlay ?

Our last purchase for experience was Kolo ?

The coaching/management team could do worse than either clear out the central defenders they don’t rate whatsoever,or actually coach them.

That part of our team has been a nightmare since VVD left. And for plenty of years before he arrived too.

At the moment,I think Kris Ajer will be a mainstay for a few years. Boyata will probably leave. The others flatter to deceive-at best!

Now,THAT means we have a bliddy big problem!!!

  7. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on 26th June 2018 10:37 am

Because in Europe our defence lacks experience, leadership and organization. We have defenders who, generally, domestically have time on the ball and rarely need to defend. We lack defenders who can sit in when out of possession against better quality teams. Toure was a short term fix when BR came in, and it worked, we got through to CL group stage. Someone like Terry or Huth would be for one season, maybe two in Huth’s case, and help our young inexperienced defenders like Ajer, Hendry, Simunovic (if he stays) and even Tierney in games where we don’t have a lot of possession of the ball.

In terms of why would we spend that amount (whatever that is), we can afford it.

  8. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on 26th June 2018 10:38 am

    Wouldn’t disagree with that

We’d be spending £40K plus for one two games, then ?

Wonder if the guys at PSG and Barcelona would be daunted by a good, solid experienced centre back ?

Or as the manager is trying keep the ball and improve on the aspect of they can’t score (as many) if they don’t have the ball.

Maybe Brendan doesn’t want Ajer, KT to learn thae big solid experienced lesson, once or twice a year, when his idea ball retention domestically has provided a double treble. He stated he wanted us to be a CL league caplble club. I’m not sure short term solid experienced etc is in his mindset. Thankfully.

Keep ball (or in our case when faced by a PSG as much as we can) with a solid big centre back, will not cannot restrict the time on the ball of a PSG. The exact opposite.

PS C’mon We have got through to the CL stages twice. The Toure – Be’er Sheva season evidence lol. If the wind had blown the other way that night and the Israeli’s had even more of the ball we’d have been out.

Granted last season was only marginally better.

“The coaching/management team could do worse than either clear out the central defenders they don’t rate whatsoever,or actually coach them.”

Maybe Brendan does rate them ? Why would he play them otherwise ? The guy isn’t stupid

“That part of our team has been a nightmare since VVD left. And for plenty of years before he arrived too.”

So it’s you Bobby, and not Brendan who doesn’t rate the Double treble winners ?

At the moment,I think Kris Ajer will be a mainstay for a few years. Boyata will probably leave. The others flatter to deceive-at best!

Do they honestly ? Can Iask for the litany of errors ?

“Now,THAT means we have a bliddy big problem!!!”

Hopefuly, we’ll have the big problem of a Treble treble problem mate.

PS When VVD was in the team was he or Celtic anymore or less successful in Europe ?

  12. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on 26th June 2018 11:07 am

Terry is far better on the ball than Boyata, Simunovic or Lustig IMO, and an infinitely better defender, even now at the end of his career.

  13. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on 26th June 2018 11:18 am

Never mentioned domestic football, whatever defenders from the current group we play will be sufficient for most games. We have so much possession we are rarely under any pressure. Its Europe that they are not good enough. Ajer, Hendry, even Simunovic are young enough to learn and improve, they just need a little help IMO (and also the manager’s opinion as he signed an experienced CH in Compper)

Our central defenders are a nightmare, with one or two exceptions.

  15. some good chat with the favourite player stuff

here goes on who influenced me growing up and it really was kind of synced into the european experience of finding out bout teams like Ujpest Dosza

Celtic Jinky, lemon,Coonolly,Daniel fergus,Kenny while on the European front, van hanegam then Cruyff from holland,Netzer,Beckenbuar Muller and Breitner i thought exceptional,

Cruyff and that Ajax side of 3 luggies in the early 70s was my favourite.its culture still emanatesd in todays game imo.

Jinky on form took the breath away and George Connolly read the game with ease

Kenny’s First EC winning team were

Clemence Neal Hansen Hughes Thompson Kennedy

    Case McDermott Souness

    Fairclough Dalglish

I might give you the keeper, right back, Hansen and Dalglish himself. Of the others, only Souness comes close to any consideration. The Lions win this one hands down

The Liverpool team of 1981 was the same plus Sammy Lee and David Johnson replacing Fairclogh and Case. Therefore the amount is the same- only 4 liverpool players in consideration for a Lions slot. (this Liverpool team only beat the Real team that the Celtic team of 1980 (a diminishing force) came close to beating)

The Liverpool 84 team that won on pens had Grobelaar replacing Clemence plus Lawrenson, Whelan, Craig Johnston and Rush. Their goalie change brings their number down from 4 to 3 but, to be fair Ian Rush would bring it back to 4 (Lawrenson and Whelan would not trouble the scorers for more than a second in consideration).

So the answer to your question is 7 lions every time. Gemmell, Murdoch, Johnstone and Lennox are givens. McNeil, Auld and Wallace make it on direct comparison. Only Simpson, Craig, Clark and Chalmers ever got brought into a potential losing comparison.

Pretty daft order to ask the question- it should be – how many of Kenny’s Liverpool EC winning team mates could replace Lions?

    ——————————————————-

    Damn straight.

    HH. ?

  18. Not one of those Liverpool teams feature on any lists of the Great European sides, nor any the of greatest European Cup finals.

The Lions are on every single one of them.

The trail blazers, the original Total Football, the first to do it, the team that conquered the continent.

And remember this – all born within a small radius of Celtic Park – it was never to be repeated since and it will never be done again.

The CFC set the heather alight in 67.

Apologies for singing to the choir, but of all anti-Celtic tripe that KEVJUNGLE posts on a daily basis, that was the first time he successfully annoyed me.

    Mission accomplished.

Someone asking why Eusebio hadn’t been mentioned previously?

Well maybe it is because Eusebio was a big fan of the old club from Govan.

    Hard to argue, he was.

Cost how much and the nil return ?

What can Brendan do with the £40k (He’s on a LOT more) ?

They are all just considerations that the football operation at the club will make.

Colors to the mast here: I won’t question any aspect of Brendan’s management. Too many supporters should just watch and support just now.

The last guy Deila made errors Lenny too, all were still reasonably successful though.

I genuinely believe Brendan is trying to raise the whole club a notch or two………..not a season, not a player , not for one CL campaign, but our ability to compete, with the money and size of Celtic.

It’s indisputable we have failed to do just that in Europe.

Brendan’s efforts will be a long shot, just don’t think there;’s a credible alternative IMHO
