‘ARMSTRONG DESERVES WORLD CUP CHANCE,’ FORREST

JAMES FORREST insists team-mate Stuart Armstrong deserves to get a World Cup call-up from Scotland boss Gordon Strachan.
The rejuvenated winger, who scored his seventh goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Motherwell at the weekend, reckons the midfielder is on the brink of an international breakthrough.
Armstrong has never been capped at senior level, but Forrest is tipping him to get into Strachan’s squad for the crucial tie against Slovenia at Hampden on March 26.
The 24-year-old former Dundee United star made his return as a substitute against the Fir Park side after being sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury.

And Forrest reckons the timing is perfect for the powerful playmaker, one goal short of double figures, as Strachan plots for the crucial qualifier.

He said: “I think Stuart has done enough. He has become one of the really important players for us this season and it shows you that if you work hard that the manager will give you your chance.

“He has done so well and been in among the goals, too. I am sure he will have given the Scotland manager something to think about.

“He has been producing performances at the very top level for us during this campaign.

“We have some important qualifiers coming up, Slovenia next month and then England in June and it is always good to have players who are on-form in there.

“Obviously, it is up to the manager to pick the best team, but it would be nice to see Stuart in there.”

The champions, racing towards their sixth successive title, could provide the foundation in Strachan’s squad.

Craig Gordon is likely to keep his place in goal, despite conceding three goals at Wembley in November.

Comeback Bhoy Kieran Tierney, making up for lost time after three months out with ankle and shoulder problems, should be included for the left-back spot and Forrest, too, is likely to be given the nod.

Skipper Scott Brown, who made his international comeback against the English, is still pondering his future at that level.

But last season’s 40-goal man Leigh Griffiths could be a doubt with lack of game time this year following his calf injury.
