Artur, Fraser, Craig and Wee Woodsy

390

I watched Fraser Forster (29) deny Liverpool on Sunday with a series of impressive saves, one of which from the penalty spot. The big keeper improved enormously in his four years at Celtic. Another FA Premier League ‘keeper, Artur Boruc (37), spent five years at Celtic, a period which was marked with some vagaries in form.

Boruc arrived as the best keeper we had seen in decades, but two seasons in a mooted moved to Bayern Munich (who travelled to Glasgow to see him) were off the agenda. Boruc’s form had dived and he was no longer considered in the elite category.

Craig Gordon (34) was an excellent keeper under Ronny Deila but when Brendan Rodgers arrived a weakness became evident in Craig’s game: he wasn’t comfortable with Brendan’s passing game, which required keepers to be good with their feet.

Craig was dropped and didn’t make the start of the Champions League campaign, but eight months on he looks like he was born to play this way. The transformation in form has been remarkable.

Stevie Woods worked with all three keepers. He was the formative influence on Fraser, he rescued Artur from ignominious decline and with Craig Gordon he took a senior keeper and transformed his game.

We’ll talk later about Brendan Rodger’s striking ability to improve players, but there can scarcely be a goalkeeper coach in Britain with a more impressive track record in this regard than “Wee Woodsy”.

I’m surprised that nobody picked up on Dave King coming to Scotland last week only to be told he wasn’t going to be called as a witness. I mean, talk about a one way ticket to Perjury City. It would be a case of picking out the truth from the swamp of lies. No wonder Alex Prentice said no thanks.

Re Phil and the alledged UAE money

Just my opinion, and I know many will disagree, but I wouldn’t touch it.

Its seductive… where it could take us, but we’re defined by how we deal with temptation.

The UAE human rights record is disgusting and not something I want associated with Celtic.

There is an argument that all billionare money is dirty – including Desmond. But some challenges are obvious and stark.

Be consistent – I don’t want these narrow-minded puffed-up princes anywhere near my club

  3. JIMMYQUINNSBITS,

I agree. Why can’t such people follow the Celtic supporters’ example for helping the poor and give a billion or two to help their own area?

Does anyone take Phil Mac GhiollaBain seriously ?.

Surely his main job is to keep his blog interesting so people log on.

And it is usually interesting but generally it’s fantasy

Oh and my source in the engine room tells me that it’s very possible that the people up the dignified marble staircase might need an emergency loan to meet the wage bill this month.

Or was that last month or the month before?

  7. WITS, Regarding Phil, Journalists, as with horsey pundits, are reliant on their source of information.

Phil’s sources have been wrong before, and will be again, but they have also been correct.

I haven’t added up his ratio, but he is a source I trust.

His sources may lead hm away at times, but seem to have good info most of the time.

Some of Phil’s reporting has been ground breaking, the St Mirren sectarian chanting towards McCarthy.

    Hectors involvement at Edmonton Drive.

He doesn’t report gospel, just what sources report.

And he chases down stories, I think he is someone we should be happy to have.

IZAGUIRRE REVEALS CELTIC HAVE EXTENDED HIS CONTRACT MICHAEL OLIVER @MichaelOIiver

There’s been a lot of talk in recent months about Emilio Izaguirre leaving the club in the summer, but now he’s confirmed he may not be just yet.

Celtic activated a one-year extension clause in Emilio Izaguirre’s contract which will see him stay at the club until the end of next season.

Speaking to Honduran outlet Diez about the situation, he said:

I have one more year at Celtic and they do not want me to leave. I have been here for seven years and won 10 trophies, it could be 11 by the end of the season.

The coach (Brendan Rodgers) tells me he wants to me stay and I will keep working hard.

If I get the chance, I will give it my all. Is there any possibility I could leave this summer? It’s complicated because they want me to continue and everyone treats me well.

The Honduran defender has spent the last seven seasons at Parkhead following a £620,000 move from CD Motagua in August 2010 and was set to leave the club in the summer.

Fellow Central American side Deportiva Alajuelense were interested in signing the 30-year-old on a free transfer in the summer but Celtic have ensured that he sticks around for at least one more year.

Izaguirre has made 251 appearances for Celtic since joining, scoring seven goals and recording 47 assists but has fallen behind Kieran Tierney in the pecking order since the teenager emerged as a first-team starter, making just nine SPFL starts this season.

As far a back ups go, Izaguirre is very competent and showed that when Kieran Tierney was out injured and required double surgery.

It also means Celtic don’t have to find a replacement in the transfer market and could allow a youth player to develop into the role under Izaguirre’s guidance, as Tierney did previously.

  17. Hi, and good morning, I noticed Commons rumours that he will/may be making a cameo appearance in the last game at Celtic Park against Hearts if it’s a reasonable score for us when he comes on, personally I hope it’s just a goal in it for us and he rides the pines not to get on, I hope he gets frustrated at it and upsets him, like the way he did it wearing a Celtic jersey and the way I felt about him when he was going about doing it

Effe got pelters on here for trying his hardest, but one thing I’ll say about the big man, not once did he ever hide or let the jersey down by not giving 100% Commons did that and wouldent burst his balls for RD and in the process of doing that found out he couldent do it for BR no matter how much he tried, he had switched off and paid the price for that.

I’ll be at the last game but far more deserving young guns who have been bursting they’r balls to get an opportunity to play in that game should also be getting a run out that’s our future, when you stop taking pride in the jersey I’m done with you, he could have been a legend but when you think your bigger than the club? Well! What’s happening to him now is in my opinion what should happen to him, forgive? I can do that sure no problem, but not when it’s intentional.

Re the Izzy story that has a familiar ring about it, if my memory serves me correctly he was due to go last year but Celtic triggered the extension clause then.

Then again as I said at the start haven’t taken the tablets yet.
