As predicted, things got worse

568

On Friday, after the Sparta debacle, I predicted, “There is worse to come”, it did not take long.  Losing at home by two goals to Ross County is worse than losing by three goals away to Sparta Prague.  If you were surprised, you have not been paying attention, Ross County were a punter’s dream.  Celtic are dysfunctional, vulnerable to anyone prepared to put their bodies in the way and take their chance at corner kicks.

The biggest concern I have is the message the players get from persistently overhauling roles and tactics; going from four at the back, to three, to four and back to three.  Add to this how Christie and Elyounoussi play a variety of roles: wide, middle, off the striker, and we shuffle between one and two up front.

If you are a player, you interpret this as, “We have no faith in our plan and we don’t know what to do about it.”  At least in this respect, the manager, players, you and me all believe the same thing.

When will it end?  Soon, I hope.  St Johnstone visit in six days and they are more potent than Ross County.

Reports of missiles being thrown at our players outside Celtic Park yesterday evening beggars belief.  Across the world, on a variety of issues, you see anger whipped up in online echo chambers.  This has consequences: some bring that anger into their personal interactions, some gather to demonstrate.

A smaller percentage of them have no boundaries.  Fuelled by the echo chamber and the crowd around them, they resort to violent acts, which Mr Angry behind his keyboard can condemn.  The violence is a consequence of entitled anger and together they make it more difficult to resolve the situation.  Imagine how you would react if you were a player?

A football team has come off the rails after winning a record 11 consecutive domestic trophies.  For a club that has known so many hard times, it was a pitiful bookend to this historic period.

You sure? I’m on the Paddypower site now and they have Jack Ross as favourite at 13/5

  2. and I now have been informed that the Paddy Power docket containing the news re Martin O’Neill, is also a fake,

  3. GeeBee, Just checked myself and my page showed Gordon Strachan Fav @ 6/4.

Och I think I’ll just go to bed.

  4. I doubt Martin would come back to live in the ‘slow lane’, not unless he needs to top up his pension.

  5. Can Tims please no’ mention the words “Roy Keane and John Collins ” in relation to any prospective Celtic managerial vacancy…….please. I’m feeling delicate enough.

    Thanks.

  6. Moyes takes West Ham to 5th in EPL and third best defensive record. He may have his limitations, but he knows how to organize a team. Just saying, like.

A lot of people on here turned their noses up at Moyes. He’s not an elite manager and his teams aren’t thrilling but no way would we be 11 points behind and out of the league cup if he was at the helm.

  8. One of the most annoying traits among some supporters at Celtic Park in recent years has been a tendency to chant about “10 In a Row” from about three or four years back. I blame the schools really and a level of arithmetic last seen when Pa Broon was in charge. As always the Greeks had a word for it ‘Hubris’. For those of us who were there last time around these chants have a way of coming back round to haunt you, though we are not there yet. That great wee Scottish pop band Pilot provided the soundtrack ‘Magic’ back in late 1974, but by 1975 it was our rivals who were singing their own version as the league began to slip away from us, little by little piece by piece. Once again though we really have a chance of breaking our own record, well Big Jock and Big Billy’s record if you really think about it. Neil Lennon has contributed to that possibility, but he is not the man to deliver it. We need to find somebody who maybe just can.

  9. Agree up to a point. Think what went on last night was awful. On the other hand, what we are seeing is that the management and board have known for the last 5 years that the 10 was the big thing. No one is excited about the 7, the 8 or even the 11. Most fans would completely accept a change of strategy if we won the 10 and then sold lots of our top players and decided to bring through a more active youth strategy. But the 10 was always the big goal. What we are seeing is the direct result of giving Neil Lennon the job because he won a semi and then a final 2 seasons ago. Less than a month after being sacked by Hibs. We did no due diligence or proper recruitment. Instead we saw the board get drunk and stumble in to the showers to give the job to a guy who had failed once before. I can’t criticise Neil Lennon because his limitations are not his fault. But the board has thrown away the biggest advantage we have ever had over Rangers at the one single moment in our history that the fans would have asked us to achieve. Ask the fans if they would rather the 10 or the Quad Treble. I think you already know the answer most would give. 10 years in tbe making, probably never happen again and we are keeping a manager to spare his feelings ahead of the feelings of the hundreds of thousands of Celtic fans who care about Celtic every bit as much as he does, who spend their often limited money supporting the team and who don’t take home over £1 million pounds a year for doing the job. Don’t shed any tears for Neil Lennon. He is in a great job, earns more each year than many fans earn in their whole working lives, who will get a great severance package and who is in a job that ALWAYS ends in a break up. Be honest: what is more important? Neil leading us to failure ( almost certain based on the lack of performance currently) or winning the 10? No contest. Thank him for his service and tell him that you are letting him go. If you fail, at least you fail trying to succeed, not simply keeping your head buried in the sand.

  10. Neil Lennon to stay as Celtic boss for Milan clash as Dermot Desmond doubles down after fans’ protest |

Just read the article. Apparently he has “one last chance”.

Never sure what that means. If he loses to Milan, he’s out? What if he beats Milan but loses to St Johnstone? Does he have to win every game between now and the end of the season?

I’m never really sure what “one game from the sack” means other than simply delaying the inevitable.

If the board won’t sack him , Neil Lennon needs to do the right thing.

Jobo Baldie, C,mon, we demand to know who voted for Ajer and Edouarde. Hingings too good for them.

    ———————————————————————————————————–

    Thanks for that!!

In other news, and can I firstly say that I’m very disheartened by our form, but quite a few folk yesterday and today are brining out the ‘we’re 11 points behind’ line. But in reality, the only real difference between the 2 Glasgow clubs was down to the game at Celtic Park in November. WE have played 2 games less than them so there’s an argument that the gap is 5 points. Now had that one game been a Celtic victory rather than a loss we’d have been 3 points better off and they’d have had 3 points less – we’d be top by 1.

Now please don’t think I’m running a wild “if my aunty had…” argument here, I’m not. But what I am saying is that, looking solely at the league, the current gap can be arithmetically attributed to that one game.

The league has not yet been lost. Nut we really do need to pick up 15 points from our 5 December games and I think there’d be a better chance of doing that with a new manager at the helm – for me, preferably someone with no previous link to the club.

  14. I was one who didn’t fancy Moyes.

I have watched West Ham quite a few times this season and have been very impressed with the way they defend.

If you don’t lose goals, you don’t lose games

  15. Our source said: “Dermot Desmond is simply not the kind of man who will be dictated to by a hate mob – if anything what went on after the game on Sunday has strengthened his resolve to give Neil another chance to turn things around.

    I’m hoping this isn’t true.

People have given their opinions on the protest and I for one don’t like to see things get ugly. But this reads as Desmond keeping Lennon in a job to spite the “mob” despite the fact it’ll hurt our club.

What a childish and egotistical way to run a football club.

I’m always happy – just very sceptical about Hun mischief-makers.

I know nowt about fitba and have no insight into the real merits of potential managerial candidates.

  17. At last, I’ve found the holy grail. Someone who has admitted knowing nothing about football but hides behind couches any time a manager get mentioned.

Come on who do you want?

  18. DANDAN

You are so right , that definitely puts things in perspective . I will add your son and your whole family to my prayers ,keep positive and god bless you all.HH

  19. lets all do the huddle on

    Jobo

“But in reality, the only real difference between the 2 Glasgow clubs was down to the game at Celtic Park in November.”

    hmmm

its the ‘arithmetic’ difference as you mention further down your post

but im sure you can see other differences the same as the rest of us

  20. Let’s All Do The Huddle – yes, I can and I acknowledged that in my post at the start as well as confirming that I think a change is required. All I was trying to point out, in a roundabout way, is that the league is actually still in our own hands. In reality it’s likely that we need the current leaders to drop a couple of points here and there because we certainly don’t look confident in winning ANY league game.

Anyway, work in the morning so that’s all I have to say about that…….

    ………………….

I’ve no insight into the relative merits of prospektive candidates.

Tims that contribute here are well aware of my status with regards to fitba knowledge.

To be fair, we’re not paid megabucks to come up with these suggestions.

It’s the board’s job to scour the world to find suitable candidates and look through the applications in detail to find someone who fits our profile…..something we didn’t do when Neil Lennon was appointed.
