Assault. With a bomb.

245

After an Edinburgh jury found Neil Lennon’s attacker at Tynecastle last season not guilty of assault no one will be surprised that Lord Turnbull has today advised the jury there was insufficient evidence to prove two accused intended to murder Neil Lennon, Paul McBride and former MSP Trish Godman.

The two will now face the reduced charge of plotting to assault their victims.  With a bomb.  Perhaps a world first.

The Celtic manager gave evidence at the trial earlier this month before carrying the coffin of his friend and fellow target Paul McBride, who died suddenly of natural causes.  The SFA yesterday wrote to Neil Lennon for the third time in 10 days concerning refereeing comments he made.

My advice to Mr Ogilvie and Mr Regan at the SFA is that they fill their boots while they can.  Neil will be free of these stresses soon and no longer be such a vulnerable target for the Association to gorge on like a bitter pack of rabid dogs.

‘Does anyone know if the defence have changed their plea in light of the amendment to the original charges.’

Both accused are maintaining their not guilty pleas.

The judge is expected to address the jury tomorrow.

I really don’t think it’s wise to comment any further until the verdict is returned.

  2. Andrew McCormick, chairman of the RFFF, said: “After some discussion it was agreed that we should use some of the money collected by our fans to pay off this outstanding debt. This is a debt of honour to a club of honour.

“Consideration was also given to using some more of the funds to pay off money owed to Dundee United. But that was rejected as there were strong views that, in recent times, Dundee United had treated Rangers and their fans with disdain.

“Rangers fans were angry when Dundee United levied an extra charge on Rangers ticket holders if they wished to attend an abandoned game at Tannadice.

“Like everyone else connected to the club, we are aware of the Rangers standing and their responsibilities to the rest of the game in Scotland. We believe that spending some of our funds this way is only fair to Dunfermline who are suffering because of a situation that was not of their making.

“It also demonstrates to the Scottish football authorities that Rangers fans not only have an allegiance to the club — but are aware of the impact the club’s situation is having elsewhere in the game.

“The Fans Fighting Fund is doing this on behalf of Rangers Football Club as we believe this the proper course of action.

“We would hope this is not only noted by the Scottish football authorities but will have a strong impact when certain charges against the club are debated by the SFA on Thursday.”

Manager Ally McCoist and his predecessor Walter Smith were joined by former defender Sandy Jardine in endorsing the move to urge supporters to make donations to help the club during administration.

Smith, Jardine, supporters liaison manager Jim Hannah and Rangers Supporters Assembly president Andy Kerr will control the bank account and pass on donations to administrators Duff and Phelps as and when the money is required.

So an employee of rangers agrees that Dundee Utd should not be paid money owed to them.

Should be an interesting meeting with the SFA…

  3. He could change the law if he was inclined to treat everyone fairly, after Neil’s case in Edinburgh that was a joke result and now this, as far as that lot of bigots are concerned they couldn’t give a sh*t about what happens to us.

Sorry to go on mate but I’m totally raging at this!

  4. The Arab Trust’s statement in response to RFFF

After being asked by several media outlets for comment, here is ArabTRUST’s response to several reports from last night and this morning in relation to a statement made by Rangers Fans Fighting Fund Chairman Andrew McCormick.

“We fail to see why the current situation at Rangers should be used, by some, to fuel divisions between rival sets of supporters. This cannot be good for the game.

However, with regard to the comments in respect of the abandoned match at Tannadice, the Club advised that the decision to charge less than half price admission to both home and away fans for the replayed match referred to was due to extenuating circumstances, particularly the police and stewarding costs associated with any match involving an Old Firm club. Any residual amount over and above the operational costs of staging the match was reported as donated to the United for Kids appeal.

“Far from being “disdainful”, the Club’s actions were supported by the SPL and, indeed, in the Sheriff Court when challenged by one Rangers supporters’ club. However in view of the Fighting Fund’s stated reason for not paying Dundee United, it is somewhat ironic that their funds, donated by supporters, are now being used to settle the amount owed by their club for tickets which they, the supporters, had already paid for.

The football authorities must now take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that the rules of their competitions, including those involving financial fair play and settlement, are fully complied with to avoid further disputes and unnecessary tension between fans.”

    Derek Robertson, ArabTRUST Chairman

I’m sure Dundee United will take into account the behaviour of Rangers FC when they’re asked to consider allowing a New Rangers FC to waltz straight into the SPL. (thumbsup)

  6. Philvis – I wonder what brings in more money to Dundee Utd annually. Ticket sales or TV money?

Same question for Aberdeen. These fans groups have made their feelings abundantly clear

only able to use internet at work at the minute so have been out of the loop in recent days but that headline has saddened me no end.

I guarantee some time in the future, somebody will be reading about how Celtic FC, people of Irish descent, Catholics and Neil Lennon in particular, were treated by the authorities in Scotland (not only in football but in society as a whole)

They will simply ask why? and how an (otherwise) civilised country and society could get away with such things.

    RogueLeader – Indeed.

Interesting that the statement from the Dundee United fans group was more sensible and measured than anything we’ve heard from the chairmen of the “gang of 10” so far.

The latter seem to have instinctively gone for an aggressive, antagonistic approach, with preposterous comparisons to the Arab spring that would have seemed immature and overblown had they been made at a student demo, and one chairman allegedly saying they are “at war” with Celtic. (thumbsup)

If Ibrokes became an Asda megastore overnight and the football team was consigned to the Paisley amateur league, we would still not be free of them and their poison. The antipathy towards us, what we are and mean to them is too deeply embedded in every level of the nation’s psyche.

I hope that OG Rafferty is right about the incriminating evidence about EBTs, but the gang of ten want to admit a Newco; the SPL want to keep them; the SFA don’t want to be seen to hasten their demise; the media encourage talk of how Scottish Football needs them; and politicians after misreading public opinion first time round are now waiting to see which way the wind blows before saying anything further.

There is silence where we should have leadership, and so against this backdrop we have Neil Lennon demonized for refusing to be treated unfairly.

The delight with which some in the media reported his ‘three disciplinary charges in one week’ was palpable. I hope Paul McBride mentored someone who has level his skill and tenacity.

Re the trial when Neil was attacked at Tynecastle. The accused pled guilty to the assault charge so the judge should have directed the jury that there was no need to discuss it but didnt. So he should have been convicted on what he pled guilty too and that a not proven verdict would never have been delivered!!

  17. A guy pulls out a gun puts in your face and pulls the trigger. It fails to fire because he does not know how to operate a firearm and has left the safety on.

Would he be charged with intent to assault or attempted murder?

Suppose it depends if the face in question belongs to Neil Lennon.

    One Nation…

  18. Does any1 agree now is the time for all Celtic fans organisations to get together and tell the other clubs to shove there away tickets where the sun don’t shine!!!

  19. Some random comments as I try to catch up after a broadband outage:

Bain drops his case. Guess he knows how fecked they really are. Why keep throwing in good money when you know you will never get it back?

Kennedy and Murray to walk away? And it will all be Craig Whyte’s fault of course.

    Cha’s appeal. No surprise there.

The trial – If only they had sung about a bomb rather than sending one. (There should be an allegedly in there somewhere, I suppose). Songs are apparently a greater threat to Scottish society than explosives.

Correct, we have the opporunity to celebrate soon so lets make it some party.

I was asked 2 questions by a young neighbour the other day.

    1. Why are we (Celtic fans/ Irish Catholic decent) hated so much in Scotland?

Answer I gave him in a nutshell is that we have far more power in this country, than they ever expected us to achieve, and this greatly manifests itself in our football club being better than the ‘establishment’ club in many areas.

    2. Was it always this bad?

Answer I gave him was..No. It was always bad but since the demise of the ‘esablishment’ club, things have got worse. I can go back to the 60’s but this last decade has seen a negative hyperbole towards CFC by governing bodies and media, the like of which I’ve never witnessed.

It doesnt matter how many scandals pile up the doors of Ibrox, whether it be fan riots, uefa bans, tax fraud, illegal contracts. They will be protected at ANY cost. One of the most effective ways, as far as they see it, is to drag us into the gutter with them. CFC would probably be shamed into extinction by now by a media driven frenzy, and delivered by a willing Government and SFA. Make no mistake.

For me, one lesson has been learned from this whole sorry last 20 years or so.

We know now, without any doubt, that we are despised by the bigots in Scotland, and that RFC must be dominant to keep us down. Whether its Farry, McCurry, Dallas, Peat, Smith, Ogilvie, Syme, JPR Gordon, RH Davidson, Syme, McDonald and many more. Whether its Lennon attacks, terrible refereeing decisions, hun riots, hun sectarianism, its doesnt matter. All we get is…’Paranoia’, ‘Ones as bad as the other’, ‘its an old firm problem’, ‘they balance out’, ‘he brings it on himself’….

The injustices HAVE to make us stronger. Lets show strength in unity this Sunday.

THE Gang of Ten will seek a meeting with the administrators at Rangers as they bid to revolutionise the SPL.

Non-Old Firm clubs want to introduce a 9-3 voting system in the top league to replace the 11-1 majority that is now needed to allow changes to go through.

Ibrox administrators Duff and Phelps have indicated they will support the present system that effectively gives the Old Firm a veto on change, protecting their larger slice of revenue.

John Yorkston, chairman of Dunfermline, has claimed the 10 dissident clubs could break away to form another league but he said yesterday: ‘‘We have not discussed that yet. It could be an option but nothing has been agreed on anything like that.”

He disclosed that members of the Gang of 10 would talk to the administrators of Rangers in an attempt to change their minds over sticking with the status quo.

Yorkston hopes the clubs could achieve their objectives by ‘‘peaceful negotiations’’.

In an ideal world, not making further comment or speculating on the case until after the verdict would be wise. However, when we will be the only ones not commenting/speculating it means that only other voices will be heard.

Sadly, I have absolutely no confidence that any of the remaining voices will remotely try to present a balanced view, never mind one from the perspective of the victims.
