Assessing defenders and graduating talent

452

The story of Celtic’s left back position has been largely painful over the years. Emilio Izaguirre arrived after the 2010 Wold Cup and, for a few seasons at least, strengthened what was a perennial weak spot in the team. You’re going back decades, possibly to Danny McGrain himself, before you’ll find someone in the left back position Emilio wasn’t clearly a stand-out improvement on.

Having supplanted Emilio in the Celtic team, there’s a good chance that 18-year-old Kieran Tierney will make his Scotland debut tonight on his breakthrough season. It’s a great story for a player who has physicality and maturity beyond his years. We might just have a genuine player on our hands.

The echo of a big failure at left back still reverberates around the club. Seven years ago Sligo Rovers’ Seamus Coleman, was on trial at Lennoxtown, but was sent home as he wasn’t judged able to put pressure on Lee Naylor, during Gordon Strachan’s last season. Then reserve team coach, Willie McStay, recommended Coleman to Everton, where the player has turned into one of the best left backs in the English Premier League.

Assessing strikers is comparatively easy; there are objective statistics (goals scored) to inform your view, including at youth level. It’s not as easy assessing a defender, where picking a winner offers you only subjective opinions. Kieran has achieved far more than any of his teenage contemporaries this season, some of whom were more lauded than him.

Perhaps the crucial deciding factor in all this was who was given an extended run in the team. If you don’t allow your youth players to graduate (at the right time), and don’t sacrifice first team mainstays (at the right time) you’ll forever buy other teams’ graduates.

I watched Guy Martin on the wall of Death last night the guy is Bonkers but I think he is just great. He always has such enthusiasm and he talks at ninety miles an hour if we had a few like him in the Celtic team we would sweep the board. H.H.

Celtic PLC are ‘ getting it in the neck’ as u say because they are spineless and will not stand up against cheating and corruption.

Why in God’s name will they not send a letter of complaint to UEFA?

Why are they content to be shafted by the SFA ?

Why do they ignore the support?

Could it be they don’t want to offend their pals down Govan way and Hampden?

The same pals who have royally shafted us?

It is our problem therefore it is the boards problem.

If they don’t see that then we’ve more things to worry about than even I thought

I recall a big place where more people were playing pool than watching the fitba. It was a fleeting visit to Edmonton – I went there to buy a big box of original JA press Ska /Rocksteady 45s from a recently bereaved Jamaican woman who was selling her dead husband’s music collection to fund her retirement back home in Negril.

Why are the rest of the clubs in Scotland ignoring they’r supporters? It’s not a CFC thing, that’s what we’ve all been told, CFC have worked with the res12 guys all the way, well! That’s the way I’m reading it?

    Why mention Masonic matters?

“If you look for something sinister you will find it ( and much more inclined to accept the masonic influence than I was )but equally if you look for rightness that too can be found.”

No one is talking about that and your introduction of same is pretty is a pretty pathetic attempt to portray me as a Masonic conspiracy theorist, despite the fact that I have not argued that there was any conspiracy or Masonic element in my posts.

Deal with the points I raise by all means but don’t try to divert the discourse by subtle ad hominem attacks.

I could do the same and say “who pissed in his chips” as you did with me before when I disagreed with you, but that would be an equally cheap shot!

  11. Twice in past couple of days the Club has made announcements re Cup Semi, twice they didn’t name our opponents. It’s obvious they are concious of the feelings of the support, and that should be acknowledged.

I am sure that a few on here will manage to turn this positive into a negative just as guys are calling out Paul, The Requisitioner’s, Winning Captain’s etc. as if these guys had an obligation to them.

To be honest if I was any of the above mentioned I would chuck it and tell the permanently offended to go f**k themselves.

Were there 2 versions of the 5 Way Agreement ? ( one with point stripping on the agenda and one with a fine on the agenda )

Did all of the participants in the 5 Way Agreement endorse the awarding of a Temporary Licence to the Zombies or did the SFA / SPFL come up with that little gem all on their own.?

At Dublin Airport awaiting flight home and, so, not have time to scroll back but someone earlier hit the nail on the head. For those who are giving Auldheid and the other proponents of Resolution 12, what are you doing. It is too easy to leave it to others. Yes, our Board should be more proactive, or at least issue some statement, but if it cannot or will not, then all of us can do something. Even Regan’s survey might be a start.

I admire the work of those who have toiled on our behalf, to get the Resolution this far.

As my elder and senior Tim, the above post speaks for me 100%.

The reason why my visits to CQN are few at the present time.

  17. CORKCELT,

Couldn’t agree more. I wonder what Br Walfrid would think of some of the personal insults being thrown at folk who are trying to act for the benefit of all Celtic people. I have nothing but admiration and respect for the likes of Auldheid. I have said it before but I will repeat it here: if we are to have supporters on the Board we need look no further than him. BRTH’s suggestion this morning- the chap who started Mary’s Meals- would be another. He acts from the same motivation as Br Walfrid. Imo, that is Christian charity and not some political stance. How I wish we could go back to our beginnings. Doubt if it is feasible, if we want to remain a Cub with aspirations to play with the big boys of European football.

  18. For me assessing players should be soooooooootie i ,

When looking at a player i would ask myself,”has he got it” ye know yon takes too many words to explain but ye just know,as i did the 1st time I seen young Tierney and many others play, then when looking at a few with an option to buy “who has the most of it”

    SimplesCSC

some people employed by our club are spending money on some players who hivnae “got it”

    We should be ,

Looking to replace the scouts and decion makers after bad buys :))))))

Let me just say…That BRTH, AULDHEID, CANAMALAR, MORRISSEY are well capable of dealing with questions.

    That isnt a problem.

There are indeed mischief makers butting in, as per usual.

    Thats how blogs work.

This whole scenario could be addressed by the board, and there would be no need for all the Oscar winning performances of the hun trolls.

Funnily enough, in a recent interview in the Irish Times, Seamus had a different view of how things went of his time at Celtic.

“I did quite well at Celtic, I don’t know if Celtic and Sligo spoke about a transfer fee…

Had a trial game, trained with the first team. Got word (from who?) that Celtic were interested to make something happen….”

He also had a trial at Birmingham under Alex McLeish, but says that had he been Alex “he would not have signed me”, so did not feel he had done good there.

As for him signing for Davie Moyes, “Everton didn’t want a trial they just signed me.”

We lost out on Andy Robertson too, though he might have been a bit younger.

Most of us are baffled by Celtic’s performance in this area, oblivious, (despite your best efforts Paul), of the criteria being applied in deciding who gets an offer. Coleman is a case in point, not long after Celtic, October 2009 in fact, he made his first team debut at Everton.

Yet another one who got away!
